Kall Kwik UK

Kall Kwik may be a familiar name in many city streets but they are franchises (like many McDonalds…read moreas it happens). Perhaps because they are independently owned, the service is fantastic. I've used this Kall Kwik on a number of occasions in the three years I have been in Birmingham and they have been super-efficient and well-priced. I just send email over what I want printed to the exact size and they print it. They always give me an exact quote before so there are never any surprises. They also let me know when they can do the printing by as I am always on a deadline with when I need to get my posters and flyers out for various events. Quite often they print the same or next day but always ask to be sure. They will also send you a proof to check before they print and offer anything from 1 poster to thousands of flyers. Of course there is a discount per item the more you have printed. Very much recommended.

The quality of the print work is outstanding and they are super helpful if you have any questions. The list of their print services and options is really comprehensive both on the website or if you pop into the studio. In the studio they have badges made from printing offcuts, sweatshirts and tees with awesome graphics as well as bags and cards. Sadly the prints on the wall for bands you probably love that they've printed up aren't for sale, but they show off the quality of service.

I popped into the shop last week to see what else they have on sale, and was excited to see they've been collaborating with other local artists - eg. Yellow Door Bindery - to create limited edition runs. Not only do these guys know their stuff (as clearly evidenced all over their website and blog, including how-tos which I LOVE as sometimes artists can be so precious about sharing tips!) but they're also environmentally responsible donating a percentage of their sale to charity. All round good guys - we need more like you!

This is a crazy little newsagent, located under the Big Peg in the main shopping parade…read more They have an ok selection of magazines, covering most genres; lots of porn, hair, gaming, dogs, women's weeklies, Asian weddings, tattoos...etc. I always judge a newsagent on their curation of the magazine shelves and whilst this place isn't amazing, it does have a large range. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that it sells office equipment, being under an office building and all but Supershop really does have the most random selection of stuff; from Pukka Pads to tights to WD-40 to dish drainers - it's not quite a supermarket but more like being in your grandad's garage. A real convenience store I guess as you will always find the things you don't expect they will have. They also do photocopies which has been useful to me in the past as there is always an astronomical queue at the post office round the corner.

So I'm checking out the magazines they have when the shop keepers starts calling over, telling me he's closing soon and I need to pick a book to buy, then keeps asking me what book I'm going to buy in a hasty manner. "None" I reply in a cool well delivered retort. Truth is I was just killing time while my girlfriend looked at pencils or whatever but the shopkeeper was so crazy edgy it really put me off buying anything. The front of the shop was a normal city newsagent set up (lots of porn) all your favourite drinks and snacks, plenty of tobacco. But the odd thing round the back was a massive selection of stationary, almost a separate shops worth. Lots of postage bags and packages too. Not a bad place at all, just felt I caught the shopkeeper on a bad day.

Give this place a try though. As well as repairing PC's and laptops, you can also purchase laptops and other computer accessories from here. But to be honest I would be more comfortable buying a computer/laptop from elsewhere. The CD's on sale are pretty expensive and that led to me buying them from another place. The prices in terms of the laptops being sold are pretty good. But again I would go somewhere else to buy a laptop. Customers I have spoken to have said they would come back to this shop and get their laptops repaired. The wait was not that long which was one reason why they said they would return. Staff are really helpful and they do know their stuff.

But there is a fine line between a certain ambience and outright squalor (take for instance the rehearsal complex in Birmingham I once visited which had a dead pigeon rotting in an open lift shaft and holes in the stairs. No such problems at Hockley Street Studios, which is neither soullessly spotless or seriously dilapidated. I've been using rehearsal spaces in and around Birmingham for about 14 years and Hockley Street Studios is the one I've used the most over the last 8 years and have rented a lock-up there for the last two and a half years. All the staff are friendly and are themselves musicians. It's the kind of place where they soon get to know you. Rehearsal spaces can get expensive but this studio has a small room which can be rented for £5 an hour. The amps and PAs in the by-the-hour rooms work, there's a free pool table and there's no holes in the stairs. There tailoring service is very common over there (you can find one on almost every street) and its very cheap. When she moved to Birmingham with me, I think one of the first things she asked me was if there was a place she could get her clothes adjusted. I honestly could not answer, it's not the sort of service I've ever really needed before. While mooching around the Indoor Market in the city centre we found City Tailoring. Prices might not be as cheap as in Brazil, but it is still pretty cheap, certainly not as expensive as I thought it would be. To shorten legs, for example, it will cost £7. They even fix leather jackets, I thought this would be much more expensive but it only costs around £15 to shorten the arms. It's not only shortening they do, they take care of all kinds of alterations, fit new buttons and zips, reline jackets they even make curtains. It's all really cheap and the guy there is a nice fella. There is a quick turnaround and they always look busy. Looks like a good place for any basic tailoring needs!

Recently moved from down the road into the old Lloyd's bank, I'm glad the village hasn't been left with a dead unit, and expanded to a ajoining bridal shop. Eugenie and Elisa are friendly and experienced with a lot to offer. Alterations work on a week turnover (there's always quite a queue), but they have been known to do shorter jobs when people ring up panicking. They do anything from turning up your trousers to fixing up your wedding dress, by hand and machine. They have a little changing room in the back of the shop, so you can try on to do a fitting- and they'll always be honest about fittings and costings. (just please take your stuff in clean!) If you can't find what your after squirrelled in the many nooks and crannies of the shop- just ask, as there's zips, cotton tapes, elastics, behind the till, and less popular odds and ends like rucksack clips upstairs.
