Their service is fast and efficient. They make guacamole fresh in front of you. Their burritos and enchiladas are delicious!

They have a nice selection of cocktails, many of which seem crafted to honor the local vibe. I had a cocktail containing a house distilled gin. Delicious. They also let my husband sample two of the house distilled gins before he ordered a gin and tonic. He was very happy. Kennedy, our friendly, knowledgeable server, brought out complimentary cornbread with brown butter/molasses butter and tomato soup shooters. Yum. They offer two- and three-course price fix menus, and for a few dollars more, you can make it a wine pairing. My husband did that, and I ordered off of the regular menu. His collard green salad was sensational! He couldn't stop raving about it even as he was finishing it up. His second course was filet mignon, and it was the most savory, tasty filet I've ever had! I had lemon risotto with asparagus and tomatoes - it was delicious as well. We were at the Hackney to celebrate closing on our house in Washington, and we made the perfect choice for a celebratory dinner. We will be back!

This isn't like us, but it was so good I didn't want to go elsewhere. Everything we ordered was phenomenal! The service was wonderful and it costs what you'd expect for a place like this. The soft shell crab and grits - holy cow!!! That's the best sauce (gravy?) that I've ever tasted! Although the banana pudding wasn't traditional, it was the bomb (sorry, but it's a great way to describe it). If you go, make a reservation or plan to go early or later.

We stopped in and sat at the bar…read moreto get a drink and grab a quick bite to eat, I had the jumbo crab cakes and my wife had the salmon. The crab cakes were okay, not as flavorful as I had them before, but the fingerlings were tasteful, the shrimp had a good grilled flavor, I ordered an $8 side of shrimp and received six pieces, which I thought was a little odd for a side order, my drink was nice and strong. Unfortunately, my wifes salmon was completely burnt on the bottom which was disappointing. Our food had already taken so long to come out that by that point, we didn't even want to wait around to have the issue addressed or the salmon remade. My wifes drink was also very syrupy and overly sweet, we addressed this with the bartender and she said she could add another shot for $8, we kindly declined and she took it off our bill which was nice. The service from the bartender was good, our food just took way too long and then we spent all that time waiting only for the meal itself to be mediocre. The views and atmosphere are still great, but the food experience this time around definitely fell short.

The scallops were not great and it was so salty. I enjoy salty food but it was a little much. My husband had the duck and really enjoyed it. The sauce had a cinnamon type of flavor that was good. The blue crab hushpuppies were kind of just normal hushpuppies, not a lot of crab. For the price the food was very mid level. We took a step out to the balcony which I thought was kind of lacking as well. You call yourself "the rooftop" but the outdoor area is very small, has one sitting area, and two small, knee level tables that don't have chairs. If you were to sit at the seating area, you couldn't even see over the wall at the view. The restaurant still had the breakfast cereals/bar out from breakfast which was fine but I would've put that away. I don't think we would come back since I don't drink alcohol anymore and the food wasn't worth returning. If you want a nice bar to sit at, then this would be perfect.

Very speedy service all of their bartenders are very sweet and will fix whatever drink to your liking The vibes are disco balls on the ceiling very open very Miami Beach vibes they have an indoor and an outdoor seating area not only that they have fireplaces. If you get a little too far from their heated porch area! The vibes just don't stop. They have an aesthetic fireplace in side as well as a fake tree in the middle beautiful for taking pictures Their bathrooms are adorable, but you might have to wait a little bit on a busy day. But this is the same problem with every bar. Very glad that they have more than one bathroom.

When you walk in you'll need to either take the elevator or stairs up to the third floor. Once inside the bar you'll feel like you've been transported to an upscale, tropical bar. To order you'll need to walk up to the bar to place your order. I ordered the Hot Girl Summer (Olmeca Altos Reposado, fresh watermelon, Gran Gala orange liqueur, house-made habanero syrup, lime, salt half rim) which was so good. I also ordered a cheetahs do it in the dark (Astral Añejo tequila, Licor 43, Caffè Borghetti liqueur, espresso, orange twist) which was also excellent. I'd recommend walking out to the rooftop if it isn't too hot. There are several tables and the views of the city are nice. Definitely will come back to the velvet hippo next time I'm in Durham.
