Yuck. Microwaved frozen tapas. An insult to Spanish food. Lord knows where they found their chefs.

La Tasca is gone down hill. I was once a regular but the microwaved food is overpriced and not good at all. Such a shame!

Everybody feels uneasy about goats. Why do they taste sodding identical? Eating goat's cheese brings me as much joy as sniffing Big Billy Goat Gruff after he's been in the gym, something I first discovered in the restaurant that's so good they named it twice, Tapas Tapas. A combination of agreeable staff and out-of-the-way location make this the ideal place to get gradually sozzled on wine and bask in the warm wooden coziness and brick-walled splendour of a restaurant with enormous amounts of quiet humility. Still, I'd rather shoot a sprout off my dog's head with a flamethrower than try the goat's cheese again.

Despite the huge pieces of cured ham leg hangign from the ceiling a la authentic castillian restaurants I can't say that it was the best Spanish food I have tried - not even in Liverpool now that it feels our economy is based on Tapas places! At around £4 - £5 pounds for a plate this is about avaerage for a tapas restaurant, unfortauntely so was the food.

I'm from California & live in Toronto, Canada - you can tell Californians because when we live other places we whine about not getting a good burrito. Yes, but I'm in Chester - I wasn't expecting anything or trying to emulate 'home' - we were just walking by & a bit hungry so we popped in thinking it'd be kitschy & cool. Wow. Srsly. The food is a mixture of cuban, spanish, mexican, brazilian, etc. I had a burrito. I would actually rate the burrito a bit better than most of what passes in Toronto. The service was awesome, even tho I hadnn't quite tuned my 'English' ears yet (was needing translation). However the margarita was world-freakin-class. I was expecting some sort of margarita mix/tequila mixture, but it honestly tasted like fresh lime and tequila - like an authentic margarita. It - was- awesome. I doubt I'll have many chances to visit Chester again, but if I do, I'm totally hunting down this place. For expats who might be in the area: check this out for your burrito fix! Wait, now I want to visit Chester again soon and get all around their menu. nom nom nom

There are also non-alcoholic cocktails like Raspberry Ripple too, I plumped for an interestingly titled cocktail called 'Dave'. They all come in fancy glasses so you can do your best Del-Boy impression with the parasols and cherries! They are not cheap though at £5+ for some, so perhaps a place to visit for one round only. There is also a dance-floor in the centre of a good size, which I'm sure was packed later in the evening. Fiesta Havana also does food too, but although we enquired the wait time was too long, by virtue of its popularity. The dishes that came past us looked tasty and were predominantly tapas.

Much to the consternation of my dining partner! Thankfully, aside from the name, there's not much else you can have a go poking fun at. The food is superb and varied - there's the obligatory paella, and yes on one occasion making go-with-what-you-know choice I dined on it (highly recommended!) but there's also a range of chicken, fish and many more typically meaty Spanish dishes to selecy from the menu, that you could may I add spend at least the better part of 20 minutes perusing. Tapas ranges from £1.95 - £4.95 Bare floorboards and intimate dining make you feel part of a tiny world of gastronomic happiness, On a dark winter (or summers) night, mixed with candle light and the aroma of a heady bottle of Alta Rio Reserva, you would need little more to be feel transported to Las Ramblas

Firm favourites include Costilla (marinated spare ribs), Albondigas (Spanish meatballs) and Mejillones (mussles marinated in wine, lemon and herbs). Apart from the tapas menu, they also have some very traditional dishes on the A la Carte menu including Chuletas de cordero (grilled marinated lamb chops) and Cod catalana (cod fillet suated with garlic, shallots, cream and wine topped with parmesan cheese). Surely this is run by a Spanish family. Delicious.

It's family-run - Spanish family-run in fact, with the patriarch at the helm cooking in the kitchen and his lady offering greetings front of house whole the kids all muck in with the service, and they've obviously been well schooled because the service is absolutely fab. The ingredients used in the dishes taste deliciously fresh, and while I can only speak for the seafood and fish the other members of my party raved about the chicken, pork and beef, and there was plenty of choice for veggies as there should be in a tapas selection (think patatas bravas, Spanish tortilla, garlic mushrooms and soforth). If you're needing something more substantial than picky bits then I'd heartily recommend the paella to share between two, as there'll be enough for your friends to dive into as well. There's so much choice so small portions are perfect for sampling everything. Be wary if you're bringing a car as the area around the restaurant is pedestrianised so you might find yourself having a hefty walk to the nearest car park!

It reminded me very much of a great tapas restaurant in Manchester called El Rincon - equally awesome. Seafood is a speciality and La Casa Vieja has a reputation for quality seafood and meat paellas. There is a specials board, so the menu does change a little each day. I was pleased to find on the a la carte and tapas menu that the dishes are a little bit different and there aren't all of the usuals that I would suspect to find. Pudding wise, maybe have a try of the Spanish bread pudding!
