GREAT food however - looses a star for the loss of their epic cocktail maker who no longer works there - a massive shame as good drinks are half of the experience!!! read more

Ti Amo

A mini review (if you will) of this new hidden gem of a restaurant that quietly opened its doors…read morenot so long ago. Ti Amo might make you think it's an Italian restaurant but it's not really? Firstly there's a Tapas menu and a Turkish influence on the food (Turkish owner I was told) but the head Chef is Portugese? So I imagine some Portugese flavours seep into the mix at some stage. As we enter into the 16th year of the 21st century I presume innovation in foodie collaborations will lead to more places like this. Onto the food.. The tapas menu is nothing short of fantastic. The breads are baked fresh onsite and are delicious. The Filetitos (strips of lamb fillet I think?), Pan seared Scallops with clams and the Gamberoni Pilpil (prawns) are sensational choices from the tapas menu. I for one cannot wait to rattle out a full blown review upon my return when I'll no doubt goorge on the Beef Stroganoff which I hear is divine. So watch this space...
Little Tap

Didn't realise until afterwards, but looking at their Instagram it only opened about 3 months ago. We didn't book a table and lucky to get a table as all the empty tables we saw when we walked in were all reserved. They sat us on a table for 6 which was free. Its a nice interior to the building, sort of Northern Quarter (Manchester) in feel with the vintage (I think called Edison) lightbulbs. The bathroom is nicely decorated with nice tiles etc - see my photos. The waitress suggested 2-3 tapas dishes per person. We ordered 7 in total. The menu is split into different sections of: Little bits Little plates Little sides Little lunch We ordered from the Little bits and Little plates section and they were fairly similar in size. We had the Artisan bread and the Crispy Squid from the Little bits section. From the Little Plates we got the: Chicken kiev Tempura cod cheeks Lamb rump Crispy Belly Pork - we ordered 2 of these and good job! All the dishes were really good. Some delicious. In particular the cod cheeks and belly pork. The lamb was tasty and tender. The only thing which was not at least really good was the chicken kiev - it was OK, just not really good. So I would recommend coming here if you are ever in the area. Or even not! Depending on time/day - you may want to book.

Paid parking is at the lot behind the street, or there's free parking before the stop light. The small plates are similar to the Spanish tapas, but the dishes serve are local specialties. Entrees ranged from 6-8£. We ordered the welsh rarebit, bread with roasted garlic (not in picture), garlic and chili king prawns, spinach broad bean pie, and slow roast lamb shoulder. The quantity is small (as it is a small plate restaurant), but 3 entrees and 2 appetizers can satisfy 3 people. Each dish was well-cooked, with its own unique taste. Definitely recommend this place, and if I'm going back to Wales, will definitely come eat here again!

The Red Pepper

Well I obviously hadn't visited The Red Pepper in Newport. We had a party of 8 (but there was another party of 20 and a few couples in the restaurant at the same time), so we were not expecting a speedy service, but a speedy service is what we got. The staff were extremely friendly and very helpful, explaining the menu and what each dish consisted of before taking our order and returning prompt haste with our drinks. We ordered about 25 dishes between the 8 of us and the initial food arrived very quickly and then slowly trickled through for the rest of the meal, which was great because it gave you plenty of time to digest what you had eaten and have another drink and chat before sampling the next dish. The food was outstanding, perfectly cooked and very filling. After eating the courses we all felt that we could eat the whole meal again, then cue 10 minutes and everyone was completely stuffed, although not to full to sample a dessert! All the desserts looked exceptional. I had the Baileys ice cream which was to die for (I certainly could have eaten that again!!). When we received the bill we were all a little shocked; plenty of tapas a sweet and lots of alcohol all for £20 a head BARGAIN!!. A must for anyone who lives locally and even for those who may have to travel a little to sample their delights. Definitely worth 5 Stars.

Everybody feels uneasy about goats. Why do they taste sodding identical? Eating goat's cheese brings me as much joy as sniffing Big Billy Goat Gruff after he's been in the gym, something I first discovered in the restaurant that's so good they named it twice, Tapas Tapas. A combination of agreeable staff and out-of-the-way location make this the ideal place to get gradually sozzled on wine and bask in the warm wooden coziness and brick-walled splendour of a restaurant with enormous amounts of quiet humility. Still, I'd rather shoot a sprout off my dog's head with a flamethrower than try the goat's cheese again.

Despite the huge pieces of cured ham leg hangign from the ceiling a la authentic castillian restaurants I can't say that it was the best Spanish food I have tried - not even in Liverpool now that it feels our economy is based on Tapas places! At around £4 - £5 pounds for a plate this is about avaerage for a tapas restaurant, unfortauntely so was the food.

From the brickwork layered trendy interior to the exquisite food, to its dimly lit cosy, intimate charm, warm atmosphere and exceptionally smiley and helpful staff it was all just first class. Arriving fairly late, we made it just in time for last orders of food. I tried the king prawns a la plancha (grilled on a metal plate), chicken wings pimenton and the patatas bravas. All of which were nothing short of cooked to perfection divine. The only downside to this place is it's only around 50 covers. But as I've mentioned before it wouldn't be as intimate a venue if it was any bigger. I'm gonna be honest and say I am definitely coming back here again and again everytime I'm in Chester. Having spoken to the staff at the end I was also told the proprieters are thinking of opening a Porta. I for one cannot wait.
