Came by in a group of seven during a holiday Monday for lunch. The place was empty except for us and the staff...that was fine with us. I liked the simplicity of the menu. I ordered the 5 for $11.50 deal hoping to sample 5 different flavours. This included beef, fish, chicken and pork. I think the presentation of the tacos could have been much better and was hoping the taste would make up for this. Unfortunately I found the flavours rather bland and had a very difficult time attempting to figure out which taco was which. And two in our group had intestinal issues after the meal...one of them being myself. With such a competitive market for these types of Mexican establishments in Vancouver, I guess my expectations were perhaps a little high. I'm disappointed at the lack of authenticity at this restaurant. Let's start with the staple of any Mexican restaurant. Pico De Gallo. It was bland, no flavour at all, not even a hint of onion. It seems no lime or cilantro was used in the making of this pico. To top it off, going back to the authenticity, there is cucumber in it. Completely changes what little flavour palate the pico has. Complete disappointment. The tortillas were clearly store bought. Handmade tortillas are not difficult to make. But if you are buying tortillas in bulk it's crucial that you throw them on the flat top for a minute cold tortillas do not taste good and will always crack. It also prevents the tortilla from getting soggy so quickly. Street tacos were made to have cilantro and onions on them. Lettuce should never touch a taco. Just another soggy element. It was soggy tortilla, on waterlogged chicken with soggy lettuce on top. If the owners are Mexican or first descendants I know they aren't taking pride in the food they're putting out. I hate doing this, and I like the food and the staff I've gotten to know, but this location is gross. I went for lunch at the downtown location and when the line cook was about to make my order they took out their phone and started texting, while still wearing their food preparation gloves. They walked over to the area where the shells are made, made them and carried them over touching the food with the contaminated gloves, and then made their way to the line to prepare my order and still did not change their gloves. After seeing this I cancelled my order. This is the second time I have seen this happen. The first time staff was handling cash and then preparing food wearing the same gloves. I emailed the company directly and told them the issue and they assured me that they would make sure the staff would be trained properly in regards to safe food handling. The ownership have obviously not done that. I want to add that the person who took my order and processed my refund was great and understood that people preparing food shouldn't be handling materials that are not food related without washing their hands/changing their gloves, but the other two people who were working there at the time were laughing at the situation. There are other places in the downtown area with equal quality food in the same price bracket who handle food safely, and I would recommend you try these other places before going here. read more

A modern mexican restaurant; this is like a Chipotle but for tacos. Good deal for your money considering you get to try many different combinations since the tacos are pretty small at $2-3 each. When you come in you order, then you take a seat. I got the beef taco with verde-mild and chicken tinga with pico de gallo. The flank steak chunks are incredibly tender, like beef stew. The chicken tasted more like tuna to be honest. The corn tortilas don't taste corn-y, they are very soft, stretchy and thin. Their guac is smooth and tasted simply of avocados-- blended so smooth it's like a spread, no chunks. $1 for a small sauce cup I appreciate that they make their own shells, use local ingredients and the meats are antibiotic. They even have vegan options! I'd give them a 4 star if there had something more unique about them that stood out from the rest of the millions of taco places. Good eat though! La Taquisa is an extremely well-priced, delicious Mexican spot! I was out on a day adventure with a good friend and saw La Taquisa across the street and simply made her come with me. I've been meaning to try it out for a while (especially after I read all the great reviews!) so walking by left me no choice but to head right in. First off, this spot has a really cool aesthetic inside. A large glass-front restaurant isn't uncommon for downtown Victoria by any means but the way that La Taquisa uses the light to highlight their bright furniture and playful colour scheme is both fun and visually pleasing. Plus, when a space looks nice, I swear the food tastes better! This time around, I went in and got 3 of the chicken tinga tacos with medium red salsa on them and it came out to less than ten dollars. When they take your order, they also get your name so that you can go take a seat and wait until they call you to come get your food. Overall, I thought that my tacos were extremely good with a taco-truck kind of feel about them. However, my friend got chicken molé with the mild verde salsa (and added guac and sour cream) and I preferred hers. Next time around I'll have to try either the baja fish tacos or burrito (since it seems to be a Yelper favourite) but all in all, I was really happy with this meal! read more

A delicious Mexican spot which is great for a lunch out. It's inexpensive and I would recommend eating in the restaurant as opposed to a take-out meal at this establishment. Sloppy burritos with little flavour. Got the Al Pastor (which was beef instead of pork, no worries though), but couldn't taste a hint of achiote or pineapple. Asked for the guest wifi password, the staff didn't know it. Then saw a mouse run from the kitchen to under the drink and garbage counter. Gross. Went in 30 minutes before closing. Staff seemed checked out, ready to leave, and were extremely rude about a few modifications that my friend made to his order. When I joked "sorry we're making this the most complex order ever" the girl behind the til just stayed silent and looked annoyed. Bad service, this is basic stuff. Then, I bite into my beef taco and the beef is frigid cold and tastes funky enough that I only eat half. I let the girl at the till know and she goes to the beef, mixes it up a bunch, and then says "no it's fine". Okay so we all know my heart belongs to another fish taco but damn. The Baja fish taco here is the second best for sure. Why does it recieve this prestigious title? I'll tell you. Though smaller (4 inch instead of 6) it is customizable. Plain it comes with chipotle mayo and lettus but you can add your own salsa (6 salsa options) as well as extra chipotle mayo, guac and sour cream. This taco is also cheaper and they offer multi taco discounts. The resturant is small and comfy. The music is a touch louder than normal. The staff here are very friendly and happy to help you create your perfect taco combo. This place is an absolute must munch. read more

Read the reviews so went and ordered a El Gordo Burrito. Which is the larger burrito. Regular is $8 and El Gordo is $10 but you get 2 sides to add in. I took chicken and vegetables. Was big and filling. The chicken was small chunks but had good flavour. Vegetables were just small cuts off white onion, green pepper, cold corn, iceberg lettuce and tomatoes. I choose green verede hot sauce but couldnt taste it. The shell was soft and playable. If they choose to panini style grill it then this would be waaayyy better. The cheese on the inside wasnt melting so that was disapointing. Overall was good for $10. Service was meh. Free water and table hot sauce. read more

When making a visit to any foreign country, it's always fun to see how they portray Mexican food. Being from southern California, I've literally been exposed to the stuff my entire life. So on every trip I always try to see how each region stacks up to what we serve at home. La Taquisa considers it's self to more of a taqueria than an actual sit down restaurant. To me though, this place reminds me of a different style of Chipotle, offering simple ingredients with a limited menu. It seems to me that most places in Canada are very vegetarian friendly, so I'm sure you don't have to worry about them putting lard into the beans. You order up front, pay and they assemble your food behind the counter and then call it out when it's ready. According to the girl at the register, the El Gordo is simply a much larger burrito that offers two fillings instead of the usual one. I don't think they use a different tortilla size or anything, but according to her they stuff the thing to the gills. The burritos here come with beans, lettuce, cheese, and guac already inside them you just get to choose the filling. I asked her what type of cuts of the meats they use, how they prepare them, and she didn't really seem to know. I've certainly had way better Mexican food elsewhere but for Canada, this place did a pretty damn good job. I used to love stopping by the La Taquisa taco truck in Cook St Village and was saddened when it closed, but its new location at Blanshard and Fort is major step up. I had been meaning to stop in for lunch this week, but didn't get the chance. We were walking around downtown last night looking for a place to grab dinner but didn't have a reservation anywhere. Sick of being turned away, we decided to go to La Taquisa instead and grab a quick meal. Whoa, bright pink walls! Completely unexpected, but a great colour choice, along with a good mix of banquette and table seating. The menu and ordering are simple, and it's the same process for eat-in or take out: look at the big board over the counter, and decide if you want tacos or a burrito. Then choose your fillings (a good selection of meat and vegetarian, vegan and gluten free filling) and your salsas. The taco shells are small soft corn tortillas, and I find four tacos is a good amount for lunch, but get at least five for dinner. There are a few sides on offer as well, such as chips and guacamole. I wouldn't come here if you are in a real hurry and are expecting fast food prep times. Our tacos took about 10 minutes to be prepared but they were well worth the wait. I had the baja shrimp, baja fish and the rajas. All were delicious, but you really can't beat battered and fried shrimp on a corn tortilla. My fiance had the chicken mole, baja shrimp and the pork. He wasn't a huge fan of the pork, but said the mole was excellent. The prices were quite reasonable too. Ten tacos and a soda came to $23.00. I'm really pleased that La Taquisa can be part of my regular takeout rotation again. I missed it! First visit, let's go Gringa: a small corn quesadilla with cheese, that I chose to add chicken Tinga - shredded, stewed chicken - and Pico de Gallo salsa ($4.00). Chipotle coming through and the salsa tasted fresh but the chicken was same texture as the cardboard serving tray. It's a no. Today I tried a Burrito with fish and mild green salsa ($8.00). This thing is huge and weighty, although not with fish, mostly refried beans. The little breaded, fried cod piece was hidden by a big mush of beans, salsa, mayo and bulked up with shredded lettuce. Pretty tasty burritos, not ginormous, but adequately sized. The fish burrito had a fishy taste to it, so I suspect, it wasn't the freshest. Also, some of the cheese was still cold and not melty inside my burrito. They also sell Mexican cola which was quite different than regular cola, but tasty and refreshing. Staff are friendly. Difficult to find good, cheap authentic Mexican in BC, so will be back to try a non-fish burrito next time we are in Victoria. read more

This is my favorite Mexican food place in Victoria. I highly recommend the Baja shrimp filling... especially in the Gordo burrito for a delicious filling meal. There are some great Mexican food places in Victoria such as tacofino and la taqueria (all within one block) but the best secret of la taquisa is their back patio open to the public. Every single thing in the menu is amazing. I've been a customer for years and I can't say enough good things. With someone like myself with a high spice tolerance I really appreciate the "brava spicy" salsa, was hootttt. Depending when the habaneros are in season you will get a spicy burrito or a " mouth burning" burrito ( which I love). Everything is clearly made with authentic, Mexican love!! The food is ok but the Wilson street location is quite disorganized at times. They've given very stale tortillas with their soup before and yesterday they forgot to give tortillas with the soup. My partner picked it up and didn't realize that there were supposed to be tortillas in a separate container and came home with the "tortilla soup" that didn't have any tortillas. So I had to drive all the way back to get the tortillas. Since we eat together as a family everyone had to wait and all our food had to be re-heated. First world problem, I know, but their customer service is so crappy they didn't even offer a free soup or anything. I ordered 10 tacos and tried 5 different meat fillings including one fish. I was a bit disappointed with the bland taste. The fish was okay, but my homemade version was tastier. No tomatoes, no onions, no cilantro, just two tiny lime squeezes. An average four star rating is simply overrating. I've been here on two occasions. 1st -- shared 8 tacos (rajas, mole, bean & cheese, fish al pastor) and tortilla soup with my girlfriend. Had mild salsa verde on all tacos. Overall, the tacos were really good! The mole and raja ones were a bit wet, but full of flavour. Even though it was the least exotic, the bean & cheese was sooo good! The fish al pastor tacos were a bit fishy tasting, and not too great. Tortilla soup is thick, cheesy, and tomato-y with a nice earthy flavour to it. 2nd -- Had the burrito with baja-style fish. I was tempted to get El Gordo and have more beans + 2 fillings, but decided against it. Good choice on my part, as the normal burrito was filling enough. The fish was really tasty and the rest of the burrito was too. I do think the "spicy verde" salsa could be a lot spicier though. I like this place! Service has been really friendly both times, and the place is clean and has cool music. Would definitely come back and recommend to others. read more

The best tacos and burritos in Victoria and possibly the best pork taco anywhere. I have eaten here more times then I'd like to admit and have tried pretty much everything on their menu. The pork is by far my favorite for a taco, followed up by the shrimp. For a burrito as strange as it sounds get an el gordo, picante with pork AND shrimp, so damn good! You will thank me when your done mow'in down. The rajas are great as well, and so is the soup. I've never really been a fan of chicken burritos or tacos and to be honest they are my least favorite here. But others seem to enjoy them. I have tried tacos in various cities in Mexico and all over California and this place is way up there with the best I've ever tried. I only wish they put cilantro on the tacos or at least offered it.
