I'm disappointed at the lack of authenticity at this restaurant. Let's start with the staple of any Mexican restaurant. Pico De Gallo. It was bland, no flavour at all, not even a hint of onion. It seems no lime or cilantro was used in the making of this pico. To top it off, going back to the authenticity, there is cucumber in it. Completely changes what little flavour palate the pico has. Complete disappointment. The tortillas were clearly store bought. Handmade tortillas are not difficult to make. But if you are buying tortillas in bulk it's crucial that you throw them on the flat top for a minute cold tortillas do not taste good and will always crack. It also prevents the tortilla from getting soggy so quickly. Street tacos were made to have cilantro and onions on them. Lettuce should never touch a taco. Just another soggy element. It was soggy tortilla, on waterlogged chicken with soggy lettuce on top. If the owners are Mexican or first descendants I know they aren't taking pride in the food they're putting out. Where's the carne asada? I feel that this place can barely call themselves Mexican. Thoroughly disappointing

A modern mexican restaurant; this is like a Chipotle but for tacos. Good deal for your money considering you get to try many different combinations since the tacos are pretty small at $2-3 each. When you come in you order, then you take a seat. I got the beef taco with verde-mild and chicken tinga with pico de gallo. The flank steak chunks are incredibly tender, like beef stew. The chicken tasted more like tuna to be honest. The corn tortilas don't taste corn-y, they are very soft, stretchy and thin. Their guac is smooth and tasted simply of avocados-- blended so smooth it's like a spread, no chunks. $1 for a small sauce cup I appreciate that they make their own shells, use local ingredients and the meats are antibiotic. They even have vegan options! I'd give them a 4 star if there had something more unique about them that stood out from the rest of the millions of taco places. Good eat though! Reasonable price, clean and current, you'll get your bang for your buck.

This will be my new favorite lunch spot. Fast, delicious and fresh tacos. I had the beans and cheese option. Very hot beans and fresh tasting taco, perfect for rainy day. The music was obnoxious, I'm probably not hip enough for it. However the awesome salsa verde helped me ignore it. I won't linger though...

El Gordo with Chicken and Vegetables

Read the reviews so went and ordered a El Gordo Burrito. Which is the larger burrito. Regular is $8 and El Gordo is $10 but you get 2 sides to add in. I took chicken and vegetables. Was big and filling. The chicken was small chunks but had good flavour. Vegetables were just small cuts off white onion, green pepper, cold corn, iceberg lettuce and tomatoes. I choose green verede hot sauce but couldnt taste it. The shell was soft and playable. If they choose to panini style grill it then this would be waaayyy better. The cheese on the inside wasnt melting so that was disapointing. Overall was good for $10. Service was meh. Free water and table hot sauce.

Very tasty and affordable. Fish tacos were our favorite, chicken close second. Ambience is fine but more of a place for casual quick bite.

Great food. And good people. Try the hot green sauce with the chips! You can tell the family recipes are from mom...good.

I booked a same-day reservation on OpenTable which had a pretty hefty deposit of $70pp (so $140 for…read morea party of two). They had plenty of reservations available. If you showed up without a reservation, you might have to wait for them to clean off a table, but didn't seem like anyone was waiting outside for over ten minutes. What they DON'T tell you in OpenTable: your deposit is applied to your bill but any remaining balance is given back as a GIFT CARD. This is clearly a restaurant choice, not an OpenTable policy. If you are a party of two looking to splurge, you can probably hit $140 without trying too hard (if you get two entrees, three appetizers, a dessert, and either apply the rest for tip or take a $15 jar of mole home). But I do think it's deceptive for Maiiz to have this policy without clearly noting it on OpenTable, especially since the likelihood you're coming as a tourist seems pretty high. Foodwise, everything was fine, I shouldn't judge the flavors against what I could find in CA. I was here as a tourist, and while I wouldn't come back here again, I wasn't upset about my dinner experience and it did provide a nicer dinner ambiance and zero wait. We ordered the duck confit tacos (the server said this was their top dish but it was NOT good, pretty dry and very small), beef barbacoa quesadila (pretty lacking in cheese, not as juicy as I'd like, but it was better than the duck confit), esquites (lime-forward which I like), butternut squash sopecito (just ok), one tuna tostada (very good!), and the cornbread (also very good!). That looks like a lot but we (two females) went home feeling satisfyingly full, with a leftover box of two tacos and one quesadilla. The only other quibble is that their menus are on ipads which are annoyingly laggy.

OK, let's start with the positives. We loved our waitress! She was friendly and knowledgeable and…read moretotally on it. Also, my husband had just about the best margarita he's ever tasted. I took a drink of it and it was indeed incredible. Five stars for the drink. We ate outdoors and it was lovely. Now for the reasons behind the three stars: the food. As much as I wanted to love it, it was not very good. I love the concept of the restaurant and really wished the food had been more palatable. The barbacoa was over salted and barely tolerable. It also lacked flavor. I was happy to find a gluten-free place with good masa, but almost everything is made from it so it becomes overwhelming and unappreciated. I ordered the Chilaquiles with both green and red sauce; both salsas were underwhelming. My husband ordered the posole also with barbacoa which unfortunately made his dish over salted as well. Overall, we would never choose to eat here again and wonder if it is a tourist trap as it is located in Chinatown.
