Ordered a DoorDash during a one night stay in Victoria. I opted for the chips, guac and salsa appetizer with the Burrito Barbacoa and prawns on the side. The burrito was nicely stuffed with a mix of rice, refried beans and beef. The prawns were grilled to perfection and still nicely hot by the time they arrived. Lots of guacamole and salsa. However, the chips and salsa were pretty skimpy. The burrito was supposed to come with a side of chips, so I have a feeling They forgot the chips or the delivery driver ate them - lol! I had the chile relleno with chicken. I loved it! Things I liked were that it was not battered and deep fried. The pepper was tender, and the chicken was very flavorful! My sister had the carne assade quesadilla. She said the flavor of that was also very good although she prefers the steak cut a bit thinner than it was. Salsa was too sweet and runny. Guac is not worth it - just run of the mill, no effort. Great location and nice room with a huge selection of mezcal and tequila on offer. Went for happy hour. Had 2 of the pork tacos and 1 of the barbacoa. Pork were outstanding. Barbacoa very good. Both had very generous portions of good quality meat. Tortilla chips with salsa were very good and large portion for very reasonable price. My wife had the vegetarian taco and said it was amazing. Great value at $4.50 a taco. Shared an order of the street corn, which was also great and portion was huge! Also very reasonably priced. Wife had the paloma and I had a cadillac margarita and a spicy mezcal margarita. Both were excellent and $3 off of each for happy hour. Also tried a sampler of the sunset which was very tasty. Sat at nice inner courtyard patio table overlooking the inner market area which was lively with music. Service and server Davin was outstanding. Highly recommend and looking forward to returning. I was at a conference and decided to get something light and refreshing which typically Mexican food is but I was disappointed. The tacos were really small and had a layer of cheese right above the tortilla which would have been fine if the rest of it was refreshing and fresh but it was neither. The final product obviously was pretty dissatisfying. The street corn was much better but again it was missing the freshness and was not flavorful. All in all it was not the rewarding or satisfying meal experience that I had expected after a very long day. read more

This Mexican restaurant is really nice, with the decorations you feel like in a Mexican city and the food is very gresh and tasty. Service is really quick, kust found it funny she forgot my cerverza but maybe she's not a real Mexican after all : ) I taste cod tacos with a salad and it was fresh and good, my fiancee tried the chicken burrito with salad and it was fresh and good too. Soggy and extremely lacklustre is the perfect summary of my experience at Cafe Mexico. I got the Tacos Rajas (the vegetarian tacos with a cheese skirt). The flavours were pretty tasty but that couldn't save the experience. Unlike many authentic taco spots I've been to in the past, Cafe Mexico only uses 1 tortilla for their tacos. This meant that my very saucy tacos immediately caused the shell to break apart and my taco fell apart. In fact, each of my tacos fell apart as I ate them. The grilled cheese skirt was highlight of the dish for me but due to the sogginess, the cheese became more soft than crisp. The food is also very overpriced. My sister and I both got tacos and for about $15.50 + tax, you get 3 tacos. Just 3. No sides, no nothing. In contrast, my favourite taco spot in Vancouver (Los Amigos, a family-run taqueria that uses 2 tortillas per taco with amazing sauces/filings) charges $4 per taco, which would equal $12 for 3. After eating my soggy tacos, I left still a bit hungry because I just refused to order something else in case it was also overpriced and not the greatest. All in all, pretty disappointed and I definitely won't come back. read more

Fun spot that fronts almost on the harbor in downtown Victoria and the back entrance is part of this wonderful huge, two-tier inner courtyard that includes all sorts of other shops and restaurants. Nice little spot for lunch. I had the corn tortillas with pulled pork and it was so good, my boyfriend had one of the burritos and was very happy with that too. Would definitely recommend! We were in Victoria for the day and Mexican was the last cuisine we imagine eating there. We didn't yelp before going in, we just took a chance. Surprisingly delicious! Loved the happy hour menu. I wanted to order so many things but had to control myself. The restaurant was light and bright and the staff was super friendly. I ordered the street corn and the poutine nachos. The street corn tasted like they used the blow torch to char it, which leaves that fuel taste. The poutine nachos were great! I ate every bite and would definitely order again. My husband has the queso to start. He also ordered a burrito for his meal but it never came out. We had finished all that food mentioned and they hadn't even started the burrito so we told them to just delete it and take it off the bill. Food is good. Some great flavors in burrito and tacos both. We found this to be a really good Mexican food. Problems: 1) during the takeout the service lady did not allow happy hour price on the tacos. 2) we still went in the next day because of the food taste. We were seated at the table 8-10 mins before the end of happy hour. The service lady kept on servicing the table next to us and the table behind us ( even though they were seated after us). We heard her give them the happy hour price on tacos. But when she came to us at 6, we were denied the happy hour. We did tell her how she gave it to the other tables but not to us, but she refused. We still ordered tacos- paying 4 times the happy hour price. And no free chips and salsa for the kids burrito. I still tipped 20% - because kids do make a mess on the table, and the tacos were really flavorful. Overall- service should be improved. Very disappointed that this restaurant is not allowing children with medical excemptions to go in without a mask (even after the BC government stated masks are optional and - prior to the rules loosening - that children 12 and under don't need a mask). The host stated as a private business, the restaurant can choose whether or not to honour medical exemptions. This is contrary to Human Rights rules. Also, she stated she also has allergies and wears a mask, implying that my 12-year-old daughter could wear one too. I won't be returning. I reserved for a large group of a dozen women and they were most accommodating and friendly plus we found parking outside their door. They have a happy hour special on food and drinks which most of us took them up on. Food arrived within a reasonable time and all members of this group loved their dinners and a couple shared their big deep fried ice cream desserts. Delicious. You know what, this place is good. Not many places to eat Mexican food in YYJ but this is a fun spot. Queso Dip and the Steak fajitas were some of the best I have ever had. Nice ambience but we couldn't hear ourselves think above the ridiculous noise level. The people at the next table were yelling over the music and we couldn't hear a thing . We complained about the noise but were told it was at a "preset level " which is nonsense. Our chili rellenos were not cooked; I've spent over a year in Mexico and am more than familiar with the cuisine. They should be melt in your mouth soft- not hard. They do a really good job of what a Canadian calls Mexican food. It is in no way authentic, but I don't mind, cause it is delicious, friendly, and light-hearted. It is kind of cheesy in that campy, "look at us! We're Mexican! We have a funny Cuervo poster on the wall!" kind of way. But it is still quirky and original enough to not feel like a chain restaurant. The food came out fast, and tasted how it should. I would highly not recommend this restaurant and take your time and money somewhere else. My girlfriend and I have been returning to this great spot for some time now...frequently. The food and beverages are not cliche. Everything on their menu is considered and has care put into them. Food portions are fair and the drinks are not ones you would find other versions of in another restaurant. The service is kind, and they always have a genuine smile on their face. We always feel welcome, cared for and that our business is appreciated. The couple times we saw our server his smile seemed forced, there wasn't enough water for all off us and he never came back to top up. We have been going to Cafe Mexico over 15 years. The food and drink are great and we always have great service. My issue is with their customer management systems. They don't take reservations and on a busy night this can be a long wait. But last night while we expected a long wait I was unimpressed with the new approach: the host told us the wait was 1 hour AND they were not taking names for the waitlist. Waaaaa???? This was at 6.00 pm! How on earth are they going to fill the new tables when they eventually turn over without a waitlist. The host had no answer to this question. I found this approach to be very arrogant. Not sure if they thought we would just stand around and hope they would figure out who was next in a fair manner. Won't bother with this place any longer as many, many options in Victoria that value locals. Hope folks remember Cafe Mexico in an orderly manner if we ever go back to take out only. read more

Recently renovated and refreshed after a devastating fire gutted the restaurant. Cafe Mexico has made a huge comeback! Enjoyed an evening with family and we were all very impressed with the quality of our food. Fresh, flavourful and filling. The burritos are large and scrumptious; I especially enjoyed the Market Veggie. The chimichanga was a favourite at our table too. Lots of care and attention with house made sauces, sides and tortillas. The upside-down pineapple cake with ice cream is delicious. Setting is very nice too and service was great. No reservations for tables under 8 so expect a bit of a wait. Prices are mid-range and comparable to but way better than those chain restaurants ($40 for appy + 2 mains). We just arrived in Victoria, and chose this restaurant because it is very nearby the place we're staying in. Whoops. Food was okay, but our server was awful. Took over 30 minutes to receive our meals while at least three tables nearby, who were seated after we were, got theirs quickly and efficiently. Beth and I had a good dinner here on saturday night. It was a packed house so we sat down at the bar. We hadn't really wanted to sit at the bar but we were quite hungry so we gave in. It turned out to be the right move.The bartender was friendly and attentive even though she was clearly swamped with crazy drink orders. She ruled.Get that poor girl some back-up sometime. We came across this spot by a recommendation from a street vendor. We were in Victoria over night and we wanted to try a local restaurant. The food and service was amazing! It has been a week and we all still talk about how incredible the food was. The restaurant was clean and the service was pleasant and attentive. I sometimes find Mexican food to be somewhat "mushy" in that it can be hard to identify the individual flavours of the dish. We all agreed our meal here was like have an orchestra of delight; each ingredient was clear, distinct, and added together to complete the total composition. Never again! We were visiting Victoria - wandering around looking for something to eat for dinner when we happened upon Cafe Mexico. Since we all love Mexican food - this was an easy choice. Sadly - it didn't turn out to be a GOOD choice. The chips and salsa were good - but everything on the menu was RIDICULOUSLY overpriced! 2 SMALL enchiladas for $13.95?! Seriously?!! I got the fish tacos for $15.95 and there was, maybe, 4 ounces of fish total in two tacos. 2 ounces each...maybe. Plus a little bit of rice and beans - for $16! Crazy! The food tasted fine - that didn't seem to be an issue...but... Unfortunately, my friend that got the quesadilla got really SICK that night and was sick all night. That was the only thing she'd eaten since much earlier in the day - and it was definitely the culprit. Also, our waitress was TERRIBLE! We had to stop her to ask for refills and to ask her to take our order. When she left the check - she told us to go downstairs to pay - this was odd because we saw all the other waitresses bringing card readers to the table to pay. When she walked off, another waitress came up and whispered that she could bring the card reader TO us if we'd like. Why did our waitress not offer that? Weird. Also - the layout is odd. It would be nice if Yelp would let me leave a review without choosing a number of stars with which to rate a business. I can't fairly review Cafe Mexico without having eaten here, but I do wish to share my recent experience. I visited Victoria over the Labour Day long weekend with my fiance, aunt, uncle and cousins. We were also traveling with our dog, so dining out was't an option thanks to BC's archaic laws concerning dogs on patios. (You're dining outdoors. What's to stop a pidgeon from pooping in your pilsner? That's another argument for another day.) All that said, most of the weekend we opted for food trucks and take-out when we weren't enjoying room service. Victoria is filled with sunny spots to eat take-out outdoors. My aunt and uncle had visited Cafe Mexico in the past and raved about the food. All of us are huge fans of Mexican food so we all stopped by Cafe Mexico on our last evening in Victoria to place a take-out order. When we arrived, I read over the outside menu and was enchanted by the colourful decor and Mexican music coming out of the restaurant. Being that our dog was with us, most of us waited outside far from the entrance and away from the patio area while my fiance and aunt went inside to place our take-out order. They were curtly and simply informed that "we're too busy for take-out and you can't be here with that dog." Had the host or manager or whomever simply apologized and *kindly* informed us that they were too busy and offered an alternate place to get food, I would have no issue with Cafe Mexico. Here's my point: I get it. Times get busy and sometimes restaurants can be a bit under-staffed. However, when a business is in the business of customer service, building good relationships with your customers and your *potential* customers is paramount to survival. We are one family that walked away, took our dollars elsewhere and won't be back. read more
