Came for happy hour on a Tuesday mid-afternoon. Purchased beer on tap and a frozen mangonada. Both were good! Also got some chips & salsa, and some barbacoa and Mexicanos tacos; both tasted great and high quality. Sat outside and enjoyed the fresh air. Waitstaff was friendly, food came out instantly, and there wasn't anything really to complain about for a happy hour visit. read more

Cafe Mexico - Happy Hour Menu - Mexican Near Me - Victoria, British Columbia

My cousin brought us here for drinks and dinner on our last night in Victoria. They share a kitchen with Fuego which is a longtime favorite brunch spot of ours, so we knew we'd be in for a treat. They have an impressive tequila and mezcal list, and some really unique sounding cocktails. I went in with tequila/mezcal in mind, but when I saw the Bandera Martini (Condesa dry gin, Noilly prat, pico de gallo juice, buttermilk clarified) it was too intriguing not to try. While not entirely wowed, I didn't necessarily regret my choice. I wouldn't order it again, but it was interesting. I also tried sips of the Prickly Pear Ranch Water (a gorgeous hue but more of a zippy mouth bomb than I expected) and the Besito de Playa (very tropical, both in terms of taste and presentation). All three were very different from one another. Food-wise, they have a vegetarian option under each heading. I had the veggie quesadilla (mushrooms, peppers, corn, nopales, beans, carmelized onion, cheese, cilantro, chipotle crema, serrano-garlic, and avocado). It was very good. Ample portion (I brought home half for breakfast the next morning) and excellent flavors. My dining companions were happy with their food as well. I'd say that's where they shine -- the kitchen over the bar. I'll happily return on my next visit. read more

Ordered a DoorDash during a one night stay in Victoria. I opted for the chips, guac and salsa appetizer with the Burrito Barbacoa and prawns on the side. The burrito was nicely stuffed with a mix of rice, refried beans and beef. The prawns were grilled to perfection and still nicely hot by the time they arrived. Lots of guacamole and salsa. However, the chips and salsa were pretty skimpy. The burrito was supposed to come with a side of chips, so I have a feeling They forgot the chips or the delivery driver ate them - lol! Everything was delicious and I was full, so I didn't feel like reporting the deficiency. They are definitely a do over. read more

Great food - terrible service! Disclaimer, our waitress was amazing but the host/owner? was incredibly rude. From the moment we got there he was not having it. We were looking for a place to watch the world cup game and stumbled in. We ordered food and multiple rounds of drinks and that didnt seem to be enough. He was stomping around like an angry shrek and you could tell he was irritated. If you dont want people to come in to watch the game - dont play the game! I know businesses need to make money we were ordering and there were tables clearing out often. We felt extremely unconfortable and not welcomed. read more

I just couldn't get into any of the food! Service was friendly and the restaurant had a great playlist, fun mood to it. Chips & Guac: chips were salty and crunchy - great. Salsa was too sweet and runny. Guac is not worth it - just run of the mill, no effort. More like a taco salad side style Guac. 3/5 stars Carne Asada Quesadilla: there was so much steak juice it leaked out and sogged the tortillas. Onions over cooked. Peppers undercooked. Meat lacked flavor. Homemade habanero sauce was good. 2/5 stars. Barbacoa Tacos: second guest at the table enjoyed and would recommend. 4/5 stars. Bar setup looked fun but no drinks were ordered. Would try considering the collection of tequilas. read more

I had the chile relleno with chicken. I loved it! Things I liked were that it was not battered and deep fried. The pepper was tender, and the chicken was very flavorful! My sister had the carne assade quesadilla. She said the flavor of that was also very good although she prefers the steak cut a bit thinner than it was. We sat out on the balcony, which was lovely on a warm evening. Service was decent, took a little while because they were quite dizzy. But it was a pleasant wait out on the balcony. read more

Great location and nice room with a huge selection of mezcal and tequila on offer. Went for happy hour. Had 2 of the pork tacos and 1 of the barbacoa. Pork were outstanding. Barbacoa very good. Both had very generous portions of good quality meat. Tortilla chips with salsa were very good and large portion for very reasonable price. My wife had the vegetarian taco and said it was amazing. Great value at $4.50 a taco. Shared an order of the street corn, which was also great and portion was huge! Also very reasonably priced. Wife had the paloma and I had a cadillac margarita and a spicy mezcal margarita. Both were excellent and $3 off of each for happy hour. Also tried a sampler of the sunset which was very tasty. Sat at nice inner courtyard patio table overlooking the inner market area which was lively with music. Service and server Davin was outstanding. Highly recommend and looking forward to returning. And the churros for desert are great too! read more

I was at a conference and decided to get something light and refreshing which typically Mexican food is but I was disappointed. The tacos were really small and had a layer of cheese right above the tortilla which would have been fine if the rest of it was refreshing and fresh but it was neither. The final product obviously was pretty dissatisfying. The street corn was much better but again it was missing the freshness and was not flavorful. All in all it was not the rewarding or satisfying meal experience that I had expected after a very long day. read more

The food was average. Corn was not well done and rice for my dish was under cooked as well. Habanero aioli was nice. Burrito was average as well. I was particularly displeased with the service. They did not serve us for 15 mins. They also did not get the cheque for 10 mins after I reminded them twice. The Ambiance was really great. read more

This Mexican restaurant is really nice, with the decorations you feel like in a Mexican city and the food is very gresh and tasty. Service is really quick, kust found it funny she forgot my cerverza but maybe she's not a real Mexican after all : ) I taste cod tacos with a salad and it was fresh and good, my fiancee tried the chicken burrito with salad and it was fresh and good too. Definitely recommend this Mexican restaurant.

It's a tourist spot. It's overpriced but the food isn't bad. Don't expect any free chips and salsa and be prepared to fork out. I had the taquitos for 16 some thing but I have to say they were pretty good. The fajitas was a small portion with a lot of rice and refried beans on the plate as fillers and not worth 27 dollars. The shrimp were tasty though. Service was great. read more

Cafe Mexico - Taco Cabox2 with side salad, Vegetarian Burrito - Mexican Near Me - Victoria, British Columbia

Soggy and extremely lacklustre is the perfect summary of my experience at Cafe Mexico. I got the Tacos Rajas (the vegetarian tacos with a cheese skirt). The flavours were pretty tasty but that couldn't save the experience. Unlike many authentic taco spots I've been to in the past, Cafe Mexico only uses 1 tortilla for their tacos. This meant that my very saucy tacos immediately caused the shell to break apart and my taco fell apart. In fact, each of my tacos fell apart as I ate them. The grilled cheese skirt was highlight of the dish for me but due to the sogginess, the cheese became more soft than crisp. The food is also very overpriced. My sister and I both got tacos and for about $15.50 + tax, you get 3 tacos. Just 3. No sides, no nothing. In contrast, my favourite taco spot in Vancouver (Los Amigos, a family-run taqueria that uses 2 tortillas per taco with amazing sauces/filings) charges $4 per taco, which would equal $12 for 3. After eating my soggy tacos, I left still a bit hungry because I just refused to order something else in case it was also overpriced and not the greatest. All in all, pretty disappointed and I definitely won't come back. read more

One of the best selections of tequila and mezcal I've seen in BC. Fun spot that fronts almost on the harbor in downtown Victoria and the back entrance is part of this wonderful huge, two-tier inner courtyard that includes all sorts of other shops and restaurants. We had some tequila and mezcal flights w chips and salsa. The service was excellent and flight set up, replete with mini Coronas, sangrita and orange & cricket salt. Impressive! read more

Nice little spot for lunch. I had the corn tortillas with pulled pork and it was so good, my boyfriend had one of the burritos and was very happy with that too. Would definitely recommend! Only hiccup was that we got chips and salsa when we ordered guacamole, but they quickly gave us a bowl of guac and we got to keep the salsa too so we're not complaining. read more

We ordered the quacamole, salsa and chips for an appetizer. And though we could have tolerated a bit more spice, we polished it off! The enchiladas de pollo were also so delicious! The red sauce was flavorful and the white chicken breast was also tasty. My husband got the street tacos from the happy hour menu and he was also very happy with them! read more

We were in Victoria for the day and Mexican was the last cuisine we imagine eating there. We didn't yelp before going in, we just took a chance. Surprisingly delicious! Loved the happy hour menu. I wanted to order so many things but had to control myself. The restaurant was light and bright and the staff was super friendly. I ordered the street corn and the poutine nachos. The street corn tasted like they used the blow torch to char it, which leaves that fuel taste. The poutine nachos were great! I ate every bite and would definitely order again. My husband has the queso to start. He also ordered a burrito for his meal but it never came out. We had finished all that food mentioned and they hadn't even started the burrito so we told them to just delete it and take it off the bill. That was the only negative thing about the whole place. read more

It was fine. Nice place. Cool neighbourhood. Food was fine. The chips and guacamole were okay. Guac was missing something. Not quite sure what - just something. BTW, best guac I've ever had was at Hotel Ziva in PVR. Sooo... I'll be ordering the guac every chance I get to find one that compares. Now, my fish tacos - they were pretty good. Was a bit expensive for the serving. They were good though. read more

Food is good. Some great flavors in burrito and tacos both. We found this to be a really good Mexican food. Problems: 1) during the takeout the service lady did not allow happy hour price on the tacos. 2) we still went in the next day because of the food taste. We were seated at the table 8-10 mins before the end of happy hour. The service lady kept on servicing the table next to us and the table behind us ( even though they were seated after us). We heard her give them the happy hour price on tacos. But when she came to us at 6, we were denied the happy hour. We did tell her how she gave it to the other tables but not to us, but she refused. We still ordered tacos- paying 4 times the happy hour price. And no free chips and salsa for the kids burrito. I still tipped 20% - because kids do make a mess on the table, and the tacos were really flavorful. Overall- service should be improved. Someone beside me paid 1/4 the price of the same tacos that I paid full price for. Honor the time for happy hour when the customer sits on the table. Add more staff to service a full house (you seemed to just have 1) read more

Food was amazing and Sarah was absolutely fantastic. The music could have been better though

Very disappointed that this restaurant is not allowing children with medical excemptions to go in without a mask (even after the BC government stated masks are optional and - prior to the rules loosening - that children 12 and under don't need a mask). The host stated as a private business, the restaurant can choose whether or not to honour medical exemptions. This is contrary to Human Rights rules. Also, she stated she also has allergies and wears a mask, implying that my 12-year-old daughter could wear one too. I won't be returning. As for the food, it's not bad but fairly expensive for what you get. Wine is pricey. read more

I reserved for a large group of a dozen women and they were most accommodating and friendly plus we found parking outside their door. They have a happy hour special on food and drinks which most of us took them up on. Food arrived within a reasonable time and all members of this group loved their dinners and a couple shared their big deep fried ice cream desserts. Delicious. Overall I'd recommend this cafe, but authentic Mexican, it was not. read more

You know what, this place is good. Not many places to eat Mexican food in YYJ but this is a fun spot. Queso Dip and the Steak fajitas were some of the best I have ever had. Don't worry about how "authentic" it is, its close enough and that's fine by me. Enjoyed the visit. read more

They do a really good job of what a Canadian calls Mexican food. It is in no way authentic, but I don't mind, cause it is delicious, friendly, and light-hearted. It is kind of cheesy in that campy, "look at us! We're Mexican! We have a funny Cuervo poster on the wall!" kind of way. But it is still quirky and original enough to not feel like a chain restaurant. The food came out fast, and tasted how it should. If you're hankering for a solid Canadian-style Mexican meal, don't hesitate to go here. read more

Nice ambience but we couldn't hear ourselves think above the ridiculous noise level. The people at the next table were yelling over the music and we couldn't hear a thing . We complained about the noise but were told it was at a "preset level " which is nonsense. Our chili rellenos were not cooked; I've spent over a year in Mexico and am more than familiar with the cuisine. They should be melt in your mouth soft- not hard. I wonder if they used green peppers instead. Will not go back. read more

We walked across the harbor to get Mexican and ended up at Cafe Mexico. Being a Mexican oriented establishment we expected chips and salsa...to only realize, yes, in fact they weren't complementary. Additionally, two tacos cost 14$... yes two tacos. Lastly after ordering enchiladas with rice and beans that tasted like a can of refried beans and rice that was made out of a bag from Walmart. I would highly not recommend this restaurant and take your time and money somewhere else. We have been going to Cafe Mexico over 15 years. The food and drink are great and we always have great service. My issue is with their customer management systems. They don't take reservations and on a busy night this can be a long wait. But last night while we expected a long wait I was unimpressed with the new approach: the host told us the wait was 1 hour AND they were not taking names for the waitlist. Waaaaa???? This was at 6.00 pm! How on earth are they going to fill the new tables when they eventually turn over without a waitlist. The host had no answer to this question. I found this approach to be very arrogant. Not sure if they thought we would just stand around and hope they would figure out who was next in a fair manner. Won't bother with this place any longer as many, many options in Victoria that value locals. Hope folks remember Cafe Mexico in an orderly manner if we ever go back to take out only. read more

Beth and I had a good dinner here on saturday night. It was a packed house so we sat down at the bar. We hadn't really wanted to sit at the bar but we were quite hungry so we gave in. It turned out to be the right move. The bartender was friendly and attentive even though she was clearly swamped with crazy drink orders. She ruled.Get that poor girl some back-up sometime. My girlfriend and I have been returning to this great spot for some time now...frequently. The food and beverages are not cliche. Everything on their menu is considered and has care put into them. Food portions are fair and the drinks are not ones you would find other versions of in another restaurant. The service is kind, and they always have a genuine smile on their face. We always feel welcome, cared for and that our business is appreciated. This restaurant was highly recommended by some friends so we checked it out. We didn't have to wait long to be seated, but after that the service was "lacking." The couple times we saw our server his smile seemed forced, there wasn't enough water for all off us and he never came back to top up. We counted three and four repeat visits to all the neighboring tables...but not ours. The food was OK, but our service not so much. Disappointed. read more

Recently renovated and refreshed after a devastating fire gutted the restaurant. Cafe Mexico has made a huge comeback! Enjoyed an evening with family and we were all very impressed with the quality of our food. Fresh, flavourful and filling. The burritos are large and scrumptious; I especially enjoyed the Market Veggie. The chimichanga was a favourite at our table too. Lots of care and attention with house made sauces, sides and tortillas. The upside-down pineapple cake with ice cream is delicious. Setting is very nice too and service was great. No reservations for tables under 8 so expect a bit of a wait. Prices are mid-range and comparable to but way better than those chain restaurants ($40 for appy + 2 mains). We came across this spot by a recommendation from a street vendor. We were in Victoria over night and we wanted to try a local restaurant. The food and service was amazing! It has been a week and we all still talk about how incredible the food was. The restaurant was clean and the service was pleasant and attentive. I sometimes find Mexican food to be somewhat "mushy" in that it can be hard to identify the individual flavours of the dish. We all agreed our meal here was like have an orchestra of delight; each ingredient was clear, distinct, and added together to complete the total composition. I wish more restaurants would produce food of this quality. It is quite possibly the best meal I have had in a very long time. Don't miss this hidden gem! read more
