I can't believe I had never been to this iconic place before, especially since it's right by my neighborhood. The location is convenient for those in the East or Lower Valley of El Paso. This restaurant has its own vibe, and reminds me of the house in Encanto - bright, cheerful, and full of Mexican charm. I love places that are converted homes. Perhaps my favorite part is the food though. You can't beat a real home-cooked Mexican plate at an affordable price. As soon as the three of us got our plates and took the first bite, we knew - tastes like home. The seasoning was perfect. Prices are affordable. You have to order and pay at the counter first. My daily special includes two tacos and macaroni sopita with beef, for $6!! The lemonade is real and don't pass on the chocolate cake- yum! My only dislike, which is minor, is that the food is served on Styrofoam plates. But if you imagine you're at your tias pachanga, even that feels right. read more

La Tapatía is my go to place when I visit El Paso! The prices are reasonable. My favorite is the daily special: 2 tacos with macaroni soup. The tamales are excellent as well as the menudo. These people seem to know that they can get away with ripping you off on orders to go. Last year I phoned in for two orders of one dozen crunchy tacos. Upon inspection at home, one order only contained 10 tacos and the other only had eleven with tortilla chips filljng in the empty spaces. I called to complain and was offered a free order of tacos which i never bothered to claim. Last week my sister ordered a plate of tacos to go and, lo and behold, only two tacos in the plate! I recommend that ANYONE ordering to go check their order for accuracy before leaving! Actually I don't recommend this dishonest restaurant to anybody, whether it be the cooks or the owners or whomever is responsible! read more

When looking for a good, inexpensive lunch, this is the place to go. I recommend their daily special, which consists of two home style tacos (ground beef and potato) and a bowl of tomatoey macaroni and ground beef soup for under $5 is sure to have you coming back for more. Other items I've tried are the potato tacos, gorditas, flautas (Chico's tacos style) and tamales. They are pretty basic as Mexican food goes. Good, but nothing to write home about. Also, they could improve upon their salsa a bit. The red salsa is just your typical watery, red, spicy salsa, but the green salsa isn't much to be desired. This place used to be great but we went in here to purchase some tortilla chips we bought two bags and they were stale and hard. This used to be the place to go for rolled tacos and chips and salsas but maybe they got new management or sometimes they lose the cook and things change. Maybe next time we stop they would have had better quality control. What this place has is that it's really clean and well kept. read more

So I went back to this place but this time to try their gorditas. Boy oh boy, was I wowed. I ordered the colorado and picadillo on corn and to say they were full of flavor is minimizing the experience. They serve it with a red and green pico de gallo salsa. Both were perfect on the picadillo gordita. Doubt let the plain watery looking red salsa fool you. Its flavorful and hot. The pico taste like my childhood. The place is colorful and proudly portrays our Mexican culture through their decor. Prices are budget friendly. Cant wait to bring my picky parents here to have some gorditas. read more

It's like your own Mexican grandmother is cooking in the kitchen! Their tamales (red, green, and sweet tamales) are a model of perfection! The restaurant is located right near to the Ysleta Mission in the old town of Ysleta. The setting and interior design is very nice and has a home-like feel to it. Gorditas here are really good. Filling too. Some folks may think that it wouldn't fill them up upon seeing the gorditas but they surely did fill me up. The meat and potatoes marinade very well together. Quality spot too. Lots of families come here. The limeade here is made fresh and it tastes fresh. I enjoyed it. La Tapatia is a restaurant in Ysleta right off of Alameda, at 8941 Old County Dr., El Paso, TX 79907. They are a tortilleria as well which means they make their own masa in house. This fresh masa is used in their tostadas, tacos, gorditas, enchiladas and tamales. The masa as well as tortillas and tostadas are also for sale and well worth picking up. I have been here a few times so far. On the first visit we ordered three gorditas. They came out hot and crispy, filled with ground beef and potato and topped with lettuce, tomato and shredded cheese. The masa was coarse ground and thick, the filling was seasoned well and substantial. These gorditas were awesome and on the side came three little containers of pico de gallo for each one. Spicy and delicious with finely diced jalapeños onion and a little tomato, each side was completely emptied onto the gorditas. This too can be bought fresh for a little over two dollars for a decent sized container. On my first visit I noticed they had potato tacos for only .59 cents; on my next visit I ordered four potato tacos. These too came fresh from the fryer. Crispy and stuffed with buttery mashed potato and topped with shredded cabbage, tomato and cheese. The tortillas were thin, yellow corn tortillas, which made for perfect tacos dorados and again each taco came with a side of their delicious pico de gallo. La Tapatia is a place I wish more restaurants in the area modeled themselves after. Fresh ingredients, masa made in house and straightforward, delicious Mexican comfort food. I look forward to going back to try their tamales, chile rellenos, and to also taste their enchiladas. read more

That was brilliant. Down home mama's style. I met Senora Lopez. Always nice to meet another lopez in my travels. Okay the food. The relleno was perfect though I would say the sauce that came with it is killer. The tacos very traditional and tasty. I'm always impressed when the flavors come thru not just spice from chilis. Great authentic food! I just moved to El Paso a few months ago and this is by far one of my favorite restaurants. This place gives me Mexico feels, the restaurant and bathroom are very clean. Horrible service and food it was so gross when we got home our food was put with the plate upside down and the eggs were raw all mixed up not even my dog would eat it went back to complain and the cook came out denied everyhing. This is the only place, outside of my mom's, where I'll eat these two items: gorditas and chiles rellenos. Located a short hop from my old high school (Ysleta, esse!) - La Tapatia has been a traditionally consistent restaurant when it comes to great chips, salsa, chiles rellenos and gorditas. I usually get the gordita plate (includes rice, beans, lettuce and tomato) and a relleno on the side. If I'm in the mood, I'll throw in a bottled horchata or a bottled Coke. Very good gorditas!!!! This place is legit. Cozy little mesa/corn places that makes their tamales, gorditas, and tortilla fresh. If I must say something negative then it would have to be that there are not enough salsa or sauces for the food. Everything was flavorful and fresh, but after a while it gets a little dry. Unfortunately the place we really wanted to eat at closes early on Sundays. So we hesitantly decided to go to Carlos & Mickey's since it was open. My boyfriend said the margarita was good but the food was very subpar. We added the free salsa that came with tostadas to the guacamole. It needed something to give it a decent taste. Then my flautas were not very good. I asked for more salsa so they brought me a different version. The salsa made the flautas somewhat more palatable. My boyfriend had a combo plate and ate it since he was hungry but didn't say he really liked anything on it. I say this to those from out of town esp when visiting for events like the Sun Bowl, there are other restaurants that serve fantastic Mexican food in El Paso. You truly should consider those!

It tasted so fresh and the perfect mixture of fried meat skin was just amazing. Literally drooled as I ate it. I watched other tables and also got the fried green beans and the spicy shrimp cold soup. Sorry, I only remember names after a few amazing experiences. 10/10 if you're visiting try here. The ordering mechanisms is a bit weird but worth it.
