Friendly Irish waitress is eager and willing to ensure your visit will be a pleasant one. I ate here a few times with friends and family while at university in Aberystwyth and every time I visited I enjoyed myself. The wine on offer wasn't the best but the food made up for it. The stone walls and nic-naks on the wall make this place feel traditionally Spanish, despite being on a backstreet student town in Mid-Wales. But what I like about this place is that it doesn't try and pretend it's something it's not. It's a small, family run little restaurant and it provides a neat family run style service. There were three groups of diners in La Taberna on the rainy Tuesday we paid a visit. One table was speaking Spanish, one Welsh, one English. All served by a friendly Irish waitress. That mish-mash of cultures carries over to the food: It's certainly not the most authentic tapas I've had, even by British standards. So if you're some kind of food snob who likes their cuisine nicely categorised, then La Taberna's probably going to rub you up the wrong way. If, however, you're a rational human being who ranks taste and value before culinary pigeon-holing, you could do far worse. Random picks: The paella was rather good. The chorizo was yummy, but very oily. I really enjoyed the garlic mushrooms too. I've heard tale the meatballs ain't great, but have not verified this myself. read more

La Taverna is a lovely small restaurant with fantastic staff. Our favourite restaurant in Aberystwyth.

Very friendly and very cosy. I have always had to book in advance as it is very popular! Great food (I have been a number of times and haven't found a dish I don't like yet) good value definately go for the house wine :o) Do take cash as they don't take card payments, please don't let this put you off though it is worth the visit! read more
