The Bakers Table - Interior of the cafe

The Bakers Table

Wow! We learned about The Baker's Table on a Talgarth Mill brochure left at our AirBnB in Penderyn,…read moreon the other side of Brecon Beacons park... We were heading back to London the next day, and at first thought "too bad this isn't on our way home," but the next morning decided we wanted to see more of the park anyway, as well as a few other points north before our weeklong adventure adjourned... What a pleasure it was to stop here on that dreary morning! When we arrived around 10:30am, the whole place was bustling with what turned out to be a tour group of retirees, about to tour the historic adjacent mill. The setup is counter service style: order your items, take your number and choose a table (indoors or outdoors). Most of the indoor tables overlook the brook running through the mill; the outdoor tables are in the courtyard of the mill buildings. They don't have a true breakfast, per se, but they have teas, coffee/espresso drinks, breads, cakes and cookies available all day, most of which are made using grains locally harvested and milled right there. There are some gluten free options available as well. At 11:30, their lunch menu is available and features sandwiches, soup and salads, all made from locally sourced, processed and grown Welsh foods. We were still finishing up our morning coffee, enjoying the chill vibe of the place (especially after the tour group moved on - haha!) by the time lunch was available, so we decided to stick around a little longer and try it out too! After much deliberation about how to best sample their offerings (everything sounded AMAZING), we opted for a soup/sandwich combo with the ham, cheese & mustard sandwich and fresh garden pea and mint soup, along with a "board" that included salad, two cheeses, local ham, an apple, fresh cherry tomatoes, house chutney and fresh bread. So simple, but so delicious!! We ate it ALL... I can't recommend enough the sheer quality of this real, simple but delicious local food. Other items to note: Credit cards require a £10 minimum charge. Locally made gifts and gourmet food items are available for purchase. Restroom entrance is in the courtyard, but there are public toilets in the adjacent building, facing the street as well. Free Wi-Fi. Check out the Talgarth Mill Craft Shop next door if you are looking for locally made Welsh treasures to take home. Free parking (and recycling drop-off) is available a couple of short blocks away, just off the highway. The Talgarth visitor's centre across the street is there for all kinds of information about the area, or, if you'd just like to converse with the friendly locals.

"possibly the best caff in the world" is their tag line... don't know if they are, but I think…read morethey're pretty damn close! Again it was recommended to me, but even if it hadn't, the bright blue building stands out and draws everyone in. There were lots of locals and visitors having breakfast and lunch, so it was already pretty busy when our group showed up. I had a group of 40+ university students in tow and I think that this was a very good budget eatery for them...whether you have a huge appetite and eat your entire dish, or if you split a meal with someone else. I was very impressed with how quickly and efficiently the staff handled our group with no advanced warning. I was looking at the menu and was excited to see the homemade falafels on there. However, when I got to the counter I was informed that they were not on offer that day, but I noticed a specials board that I hadn't seen before and chose the leek, mushroom, and ham hot pot with chips. I was seeing everyone's food come out and was extremely excited for mine. One student ordered the chili and out came a heaping platter of chili on top of rice... you'd think that it was an order for two people! My food came out rather quickly, but still piping hot! The hot pot was absolutely delicious...creamy, lots of flavour, and had big chunks of leeks, mushrooms, and ham. This was definitely homemade. And the chips... you could tell those were homemade and fresh! They were crisp and a little dark on the outside, but wonderfully soft on the inside. It was so much food, but it was so delicious and hearty; the kind of food you want after you've been hiking all day in the cold and the wind... or if you're just hungry. I would probably go back to Llanberis just to have lunch at Pete's Eats. FACT.

The perfect stop for any meal if you find yourself in the Llanberis area…read more Pete's Eats is the mountain-climber's ideal hub before and after a climb. The first floor has a great open feeling with the help of large shop-style windows. Their breakfast is decent. I had the Small Breakfast, which is one fried egg, one medium-sized sausage link, large strip of bacon and two triangle hash browns. It seemed a hardy meal for the name, and turned out to be perfect to have just before heading out to tackle the ancient Parciau Hill Fort, which is over on Isle of Angelsey. Decent coffee. Soy milk available. Great dessert. Solid free Wi-Fi. Bright, cheery atmosphere with people coming and going and congregating or meditating quietly by themselves. The waitstaff is friendly and helpful. They have many private toilets and a shower upstairs on the second floor, as well as an extensive map room with maps from all over the world filed away in flat files drawers. I understand Pete's Eats has sleeping quarters, too, with bunk beds mainly, some private quarters. On the main floor they have a small sharing library between both dining rooms.
