Pupusas are excellent, as are the plantains. We went out of our way , off the 99, to come here on a whim. Very glad we did.

Santaneca Pupusas can be a bit unpredictable since the owners seem to change often, so you never quite know what to expect. That said, when it's good, it's really good. The pupusas are flavorful, filling, and hit the spot when you're craving Salvadoran food. Service and consistency can vary depending on who's running it at the time, but overall it's still a solid place worth trying if you're in the area and in the mood for pupusas. read more

La Santaneca Pupuseria - La Santaneca - Salvadoran Near Me - Modesto, California

Ok their pupusas are pretty good. I got the revuelta and a cheese with mushrooms, and surprisingly, the cheese and mushrooms were my favorite. The cheesy has a nice cheese pull to it, and the mushrooms were cooked nice. The revuelta was ok. I found the filling to be ok. However, the curtido added on top with the salsa was good, and the guy gave us some hot sauce. It's a win for me lol The pupusas are a good size, about the size of palm. The horchata was a miss to me. I think it was Salvadoreña Horchata because it didn't taste anything like the horchata I'm used to. It had a chocomil taste to it. So, caution in it. The place was nice. Plenty of seating and they have a drive through so that's cool. I'd come back again but sticking with cheese flavored pupusas and water :) read more

This place is large Inside! Large on friendliness and seating! I was warmly greeted, and decided to dine in. Ice cold water to quench this heat wave we are having, was greatly appreciated. I watched the fútbol, while browsing the menu. With 3 screens, almost anywhere is a good seat. Browsing the menu, pupusa's are the show stopper, but I was craving a torta. The house recommended to start with a bean and cheese pupusa. And then went back and gathered salsa and curtido, seasoned cabbage. The pairing was delightful, and really could make a meal out of one pupusa easily. That is not ketchup in the bottle, but a very well blended tomato salsa, that was refreshing. As a glutton for punishment, I really should of taken the torta home... So beautiful on the plate, I could not bear to leave it to get cold. I am happy I strived on, the asada was cohpped and melted together in cheese, fresh beans and even fresher lettuce, onions and tomatoes accompanied. The steak fries were huge, but perfectly cooked. I actually ended up dipping them in the provided house hot sauce. Mmm the light burn.... There is ample parking around the location, and even has a drive through, but I would recommend that for a pre order pickup. Treat yourself and your whole family, they will easily fit in this hidden gem. read more

La Santaneca Pupuseria - Gives you an idea of the size of the pupusas. - Salvadoran Near Me - Modesto, California

Tasteless pupusas, the cheese tasted weird, very thin, lack of flavor and price is high for the quality. First and last time. Very bad experience. read more

Although I don't have any basis for comparison in regards to authenticity, I really like the cheese & loroco pupusas here.

La Santaneca Pupuseria - revuelta + frijoles con queso pupusas - Salvadoran Near Me - Modesto, California

I was underwhelmed. I had this great expectations of delicious stuffed pupusas.... the ratio of masa to stuffing was way off...to much masa in each bite...the meats are barely anything. I ordered 1 frijoles/cheese 1 bacon, jalapeno and cheese 1 chicken 2 asada Horchata I could not tell which was which... they were all in the same box... luckily it was just my husband and I sharing... we could not tell by taste which one was which..they all tasted the same... masa and cheese.. I did recognize the bacon, jalapeno and cheese..only because it had the tiniest minuscule bacon bits in it... and also the bean one....but other than that... I could not tell the difference... out of all of them-- I liked the bean one the best..but they really need to work on the ratio for the masa and stuffing. They need more of the filling in order for it to taste better. The curtido was good. Horchata left more to be desired..not sweet and tasted like a powder instant drink. Will I try again?-- maybe... but probably will head to other pupuserias first. Franci's had much more filling in theirs..... read more

First time coming in to this restaurant and my family and I enjoyed it. The waitress was so sweet and very helpful. I asked what there fruta fresca was it's a drink. The best way she described it was a punch. She brought me a sample and it was delicious sweet but refreshing. The food was good. Lots of people coming in and for many patrons it seemed like an extension of there home. Will be back especially for that hot corn drink that was absolutely delicious. read more

Got sick right after eating a couple of pupusas, if the owner is reading this review, take pride in what you serve. Curtido tasted a little old, and the chicharron on the pupusas tasted like it was mixed with carne asada. It's been 5 days and we are still sick with diarrhea. Called the following day to let them know what had happened, lady took my number down and advised someone would be calling me back. I never received a call, wasn't looking for a refund, but an explanation or apology would have worked for me. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS ESTABLISHMENT AT ALL!!!! Go elsewhere, $81 for spoiled pupusas is an insult with injury. read more

La Santaneca Pupuseria - Threw about 9 pupusas away after getting severely sick with diarrhea. More then half of my order. - Salvadoran Near Me - Modesto, California

Ordered the #1 with 2 pupusas revueltas. The plátanos and crema n beans were delicious. I only ate the bean/cheese pupusa and it was bland as heck. It tasted like I was eating masa the whole time. So was the curtido. Tasted like no vinegar was added. Very disappointed because this place used to be delicious. Service is good - they are attentive. Ambiance is casual- Super Bowl was on! read more

We really enjoyed our experience here. My wife had two pupusas; one was potatoes and chorizo and the other steak and cheese. I had the two pupusas with beans and rice. I had the Revuelta pork cheese and beans pupusas. For our beverages she had a Diet Coke and I had Tona Lager Especial from Nicaragua. The service here is great and we left happily and full. read more

Let me begin by telling you it's very expensive! My order consisted of 4 pupusas at 5.75 each to beans and crumbled pork fat and one pork and beans Anyway me and my sister were very dissappointed we also ordered rice which tasted like it had been heated in the microwave in the plastic container it came in. I spent a total of $43 for beans the masa and the time I guess it took the cooks to prepare. I'm sorry I'm being so honest but I can tell you every where else I've had pupusas sells them under $4 and I've never complained so I wonder is this place is price gouging? The economy is very bad so I'm looking out for places like these and writing an honest review. I give this place and overall two stars on quality price and value. The quality was just okay The service was third party but the surcharges were outrageous Go to the food trucks or make your own it's cheaper read more

I visited La Santaneca Pupuseria in Modesto after I stopped by a different Pupuseria in Riverbank. The other one was closing their restaurant :( So I looked on yelp and found another Pupuseria. The tamales were alright. The pupusas here are just okay. I tried the $1.25 special pupusas and the regular larger pupusas. I think I've enjoyed the ones from the Modesto Farmer's Market more than La Santaneca because the filling is more substantial and the masa seems fresher. I also had the yucca frita con chicharron. Hard to go wrong with fried pork. read more

Probally one of the crapiest popusas i ever tasted. Coming from the San Francisco mission street area I could tell you this place has horrible popusas and not only that , they are also more expensive than top popusa spots in San Francisco. Popusas lacked flavor, not enough filing. The curtido was tasteless. The Doug was not well cooked.

Love the pupusas here. Flavorful and good size. Always fresh. Visited for Easter 2019 with family. Glad they survived CV19. Always stop in when we are in town as we live in Stockton. read more

La Santaneca May offer the best pupusas I've had in the area thus far. That said, I also haven't extensively explored local Salvadorian cuisine. Atmosphere is very casual, relaxed, and hole-in-the-wall-esque. I almost always order pupusas when I go to Salvadorian restaurants so that is typically my main criteria in assessing their food. My favorite pupusa is the revuelta, which consists of beans, chicharrón, and cheese. You can't ever go wrong with good old cheese pupusas, which are also quite yummy here. They have many different variations for just about anyone ranging from vegetarian to meat-centric. My only complaints are that the pupusas vary from slightly crispy to soft and airy. I'm big on consistency and there have been times where the pupusas are also more doughy than usual which takes away from the flavor and integrity of the pupusa. These are small things and don't happen often so don't be deterred to coming by. Please, do not forget to order a large Salvadorian style horchata as well! All considered, I look forward to trying other items on their menu to familiarize myself with Salvadorian cuisine. Cheers and happy eating! read more

Bottom line: The food is delicious and the service is great. We were new to the area and were hoping to find a good place that sold pupusas, and this place has been our #1 choice. Definitely recommend the chicharon y queso. The chicken tamales are also very delicious and especially hot and soothing now that the weather is getting colder. read more

Best place for pupusas ever! Living in the Central Valley you don't have many options for real authentic food. You're not coming here for the service or really the ambiance. Ya no tiene sabor, antes estaban deliciosas. Aparte me dieron malestar. Ya no vuelvo.

The pupusas were ok. Flavor was a little bland. All though they were big, they were very flat with not much filling.

I ordered the pupusas de puerco and asada with the platanos with beans and cream. I cannot even leave a photo, because I devoured over half of each dish in moments. I'm 905% sure that I have tried their pupusas before at the Farmers Market...until today I had no idea that I could order delivery!!! What I love about this food: Fresh, delicious, unique! It feels good when you eat it. Tastes fresh and is made from whole food. The beans are like no other retried beans I've had (red beans). They gave me a whole half of an avocado on the side instead of some weird mash. For fast food, it is not oily and comes with a very nice slaw and flavorful salsa. Delivery was lightning fast (I think the restaurant owners dash it themselves). Inexpensive. I placed my order through DoorDash and I received a call immediately from the restaurant letting me know that the item selections were incorrect in DoorDash and they were very friendly about making sure I got what I wanted. Although DoorDash estimated 37 minutes my order came very quickly and it was nice and warm as if it just left the kitchen. read more

It has been a couple of years since we last tried this place. We had heard that it was under new ownership and since the Pupuseria in Riverbank that we really liked is now closed, we decided to give this place another chance. I am glad we did. Looks like they did some redecorating from the last time we were there. Service was good and the food was great. The chicken tamale, yuca and chicharrón, and the pupusas where real good. My wife would like her curtido with a bit more kick but other than that am glad that we have a local pupusa place that is good. The empanadas and plátanos where also delicious. read more
