Very nice people working there, and the service was good, but there's a language barrier for sure, and it's hard to know exactly what you're ordering from the pictures. La Salvadorena brings authentic El Salvadorian cuisine to Baton Rouge! It's conveniently located on Nicholson Drive just north of the North Gates of LSU. The restaurant itself is open, bright, and colorful. It's one of those local, family-run, ethnic places that you know has to be the real deal. So, what is El Salvadorian cuisine? I'm still working on figuring that out (and it's a tasty process). It is in some ways similar to Mexican and Caribbean fare, but with some tasty differences. Many dishes are topped with shredded cabbage, crumbles of cheese, and special sauces. There are also enchiladas, pupusas and other delicacies to try. Desert includes my favorite, the flan! We got the pupusas, tostadas, banana wrapped tamales, and a gigantic baleada. The pupusas were my favorite and I'll stop here just to grab one as a snack. We got the chicharron and calabaza. Finally stopped in after driving past here a million times. Right by LSU, I wouldn't say it's the most beautiful of restaurants (on the inside or outside), but we walked into an empty restaurant and our hostess was very nice. HOWEVER she never wore a mask, not when we walked in and went up to the counter, not when she came to us to take orders, not when she brought out our food, not when she checked back on us, not when I went back up to pay. I understand her not wearing one if there are no customers but I would expect her to wear one when someone walks in (I'll also add a few other customers came in to pick up To Go orders and Waitr deliveries as well. Food was okay but not great. $3 pupusas were tasty, but the flautas tasted very similar to something you could buy at the frozen section and heat up at home. I was so excited to try this hole-in-the-wall restaurant because I had read so many good reviews of this place, and it did not disappoint. Salvadorian food isn't as common, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But I ordered the carne asada taco on a soft flour shell and a chicharron con queso pupusa, and both were great decisions. I had heard that they were known for their pupusas, but it wasn't until I tasted it that I understood what all the rave was about. It was heaven. The outside dough was soft, but the inside was filled with the perfect blend of pork and cheese. At $2.50 each, I should have ordered more. It was honestly the best thing I've ever tasted. The carne asada taco was also very good. The steak wasn't chewy, but rather tender and juicy. The tomatoes were fresh and a good contrast to all the different salty flavors of everything else. The two sauces on the table (red and green) were also a great additional burst of flavor when added to the food. My bill came out to $5, which is quite a steal for such high-quality authentic foods. My friend ordered the ceviche tostadas, which I also took a bite of, and that was mind-blowing as well. I loved the acidity of the sauce to complement the shrimp and the avocado. I'm hesitant to review this place because it's my favorite hidden gem of Baton Rouge (and I wanna keep it from getting too busy) but it seems everyone is finding out about this great Salvadorian restaurant! First, know the sauces on the table are a MUST! The green sauce and red sauce definitely bring out the flavor of whatever you order, even on their cabbage slaw! Their fried chicken, with these sauces applied, may be the best fried chicken in Baton Rouge! Second, the popusas! Oh man the pupusas! The shrimp pupusa is my favorite but you've got to try them all! Third, take your time at this authentic establishment. This is one of the hidden authentic gems in Baton Rouge, the place is not the fanciest, no luxury, nothing trendy. This is just a Hispanic restaurant run by Hispanic people. I love the fact that nothing in this place is a fake facade of what salvadorian food is, this is the real deal, they are not changing anything to make it more hipster and make millennials come and take pictures of their food, (no offense! ) they do what they do because they are who the name say they are. I think that's proven by the amount to Hispanic clientele you see eating when you walk in. Since you walk in the server comes ready to speak in English or Spanish to the customers. The menu is written in both languages, so that's a big help if you are a little overwhelmed by the foreign culture, but adventurous enough to come to this place and try something different. They have different really good things, pupusas are my favorite meal from the menu! Is a tick corn tortilla with a filling. I usually order "calabaza y loroco con queso" (cheese and a type of zucchini mix), chicharrón is also one of the recommendations. Tostadas are also very good, they have menu for kids and salvadorian tamales, baleadas (which is basically what is known in the US as quesadilla with more stuff). Portions are good, everything is very well served. Other cool thing is that they are in Waitr, and actually a few weeks ago, some friends and I were hanging out in a bar near LSU and ordered from la salvadoreña and after a little wait, the food came to the bar, warm and ready to be eaten. Small family owned restaurant. It's a no frills, small space, but don't let that turn you off. The portions are huge, the prices are cheap & the food is absolutely delicious! I'd highly recommend the bean & cheese or spinach & cheese pupusas. And their El Salvadoran tostada! We also got the plantains with beans & crema which is always a nice sweet treat. And the street tacos are on point! Everything is handmade & most things can be a la carte but they also offer platters/entrées. And the staff is so friendly & accommodating. But there is usually only 1 or 2 servers so if you go with a big group, please keep in mind that the service will not be quick. We usually go when we have time to just relax & enjoy a casual long lunch or early dinner. The decor is minimal & the restrooms leave a lot to be desired, but otherwise it is very clean & sanitary. Okay... I don't know why it took me so long to find this gem in Baton Rouge. I love authentic Spanish food and boy does this have it. First, the service is fantastic and they're always SO kind. My mom ordered enchiladas without the red or green sauce (which is not normal) and our waitress (I wish I had gotten her name) kept returning to make sure she understood exactly what she wanted. She even told us she was the one who prepared who because she didn't want it to be messed up (talk about insane service). Their is a bit of a language barrier but it was no issue because I was able to practice my Spanish. The outside definitely looks a little run down but it makes up for it in the food. Now to the real deets... the food. Everything is SUPER fresh. Food prices range from $2.50 to $12. The tamales are HUGE - especially for $2.50. They were some of the best tamales I've ever had. The baleadas also had me #shook (also a huge portion for $4). The ceviche was great too. All in all, I will be back at this place alllll the time. The food is authentic, fresh and inexpensive. This really is as good as it gets. I have to stop my self from reading other reviews because I take the negative ones personally. So perhaps I start with setting expectations: 1. the menu is in both Spanish and English. Don't want to learn Spanish- look right under those words and see roman characters that look more familiar to you. 2. The ambiance is that of a hole in the wall- it is clean, a little better than basic but no, it is not a four star accommodation. 3. you pick up your check and pay it at the cash register. you see it... pick up the paper and go pay- you've seen it before, you know how this works. 4. the customer service- this is clearly a small operation... it will take a minute to cook the food, and bring the food and with one server for the whole restaurant- refills probably need to be asked for. Know what this place has that make all of the above ok- Really, really good food. A friend and I tried to eat everything, tamales. steak tacos, a tostada and yes papusa. The rice and beans were fantastic- the pico, the cabbage and the jalapenos were very fresh. And it's relatively inexpensive. I love that this place is here.
