With a name like that, you have to have some characters working here. And indeed they do. So friendly! You are greeted with a smile from the busy pizza chefs and invited to take your time to choose the right pizza. On this end of town there are a fair few pizza joints. Some good, some bad. This place is definitely amongst the best. Their menu is really big as well! Lot's of gourmet and experimental topping choices, like white pizzas with béchamel sauce, cheeseburger pizza or butter chicken. Yup, that's cool! My partner and I are a sucker for a classic pizza though. Anything with olives, anchovies, good quality ham and always adding spinach. So, the "Killer Tomato" it was. Good base, not too thick or thin. The sauce was tasty and the toppings were high quality. I think that the ham they used ontop was smoked lachsschinken. Look, this is not a gourmet pizza shop. But, it's a higher quality neighbourhood pizza bar. And for that, I was impressed. I will return to try something a little different.

But after devouring this crispy based, sweet tomato sauce covered, melt in your mouth seafood pizza we decided we couldn't stop at one. Forget manners, there's no forks or plates here and the owner really couldn't care less if you came in or not. I would happily have just that salad with a loaf of crusty bread to tear chunks from. Leave room for the gelato bar, which is now a major feature of the store. Well I don't think this is standard practice, but my partner got some lovely flowers from the owner which made her day... I admit, I don't buy them for her as often as I probably should... So she'd say anyway. The pizza was loaded with toppings and offered a nice flavourful bite. The cheese was nice and thick, which while it tasted good probably wasn't the best thing for me. Having grown up in Athelstone, my appreciation of DaMario goes beyond the usual casual interest and…read moreoccasional pop in. It's no longer my local pizzeria, however - like a supermassive black hole, the thought of its pizzas is always pulling me towards them. The gravity of these pizzas affects me more the closer I get to Athelstone, however the stellar mass of their tasty bases and flavorous ingredients is always curving space time around them so I am still within their event horizon while at home in the Hills. Our family favourite is the "inferno" which after adding olives and anchovies has what can only be described as the best combination of flavours that have ever been put on a pizza. This is one of those meals that I could safely say I would eat every day for the rest of my life on a desert island with perhaps a few beers to wash it down. The other bonus with DaMario is that it is a family run business, with the same owners who have been there since I can remember, and I've been going there for at least 15 years. They take pride in their work and the standard has been consistent the whole time and will be into the future as the younger generation continue the tradition. Also, DaMario supports local football teams (or soccer, depending on where you grew up) and have Adelaide United and other signed jerseys and posters on display. The only downside to DaMario (for me) is that it's not next door to my house. There is always the option for me to buy a caravan, grow a long beard and wear tissue boxes as slippers and park in the carpark so that I can eat their pizza for every meal, so they can hardly be blamed for that.
