Right next door to our hotel, it was so convenient to stumble back (quietly) afterwards after so much excellent wine. The meal was first-rate, service was as tremendous as could be given that most of the restaurant was taken up with an enormous private party, which they made up for with complementary wine (always welcome) and seating us above in our own semi-private alcove, complete with a little library of old books to entertain ourselves. We left feeling like we experienced a real bit of Barcelona, and some of the best and thoughtful food we'd eaten to date. Love, love, love.

Filled to the brim with locals on all nights. It remains some of the freshest seafood and most authentic, local catalan experience I had on my trip to Barcelona. I still think about the razor clams and pulpitos (baby octopus). Get any seafood dish here and you won't be sorry. They do not over complicate the food here. It is fresh, simple and with the best ingredients and care. Since it's a local place you can actually enjoy specialties such as patas bravas and pan con tomate. (I tended to avoid those cliche dishes elsewhere because they're just trying to trap tourists in to eating soggy fries with mayo and stale bread). Here it was AMAZING. The place is really busy on weekends, you need to arrive before locals. 8-8:30 should work. The service is attentive despite the hustle and bustle. Split a bottle of white wine and chow done on the best seafood of your life. You won't be sorry. If you're anywhere near the El Born area, you must give this place a try. It is far and beyond the overpriced "seafood" restaurants in Barceloneta by the water.

This is definitely a small, local, casual bar to grab a bocadillo and a drink or two. Service was friendly and fast, they checked in on us but mostly let us do our own thing. Everyone also spoke English, which made things easier for us. Foodwise, we got 2 different bocadillos to try along with the patatas bravas. I loved the iberico bocadillo and the other one as well (I forgot the name but it had country sausage, peppers, and onions). The bread was crisp but soft and did not hurt the roof of my mouth. The filling was flavorful and balanced. The patatas bravas were not the usual ones we were used to, they were herbed and not fried but were so good. We had hoped to return for a second meal here or for takeaway for our flight but unfortunately, timing did not work out. I definitely recommend this spot and think its an excellent, cheap spot for an amazing meal.

One of the first things you should get straight at Bar Fidel is that this is *not* a Spanish…read morebusiness; it's a Catalan one. The owner will hit you over the head with this fact. I know it's a big deal and I know people have bad days but this gentleman was in a mood if ever one was. On one hand, I was happy with the non-touristy, local experience I was getting. On the other one, I found myself longing for a touch of tourist consideration. Even though Catalan is the word of the day at Bar Fidel, you won't get (too many) bad looks by speaking in Spanish. Try to avoid speaking in English. Also, avoid ordering sangria. Not only is it not an option, it makes the owner not want to suffer fools and to complain about people coming to his city and wanting such 'pedestrian' libations. Get your wine and keep it moving. You're at a local's pub, so keep it simple: salad, sandwich, wine, and/or beer. These are your choices... and I had all four. Were I to come back, I would settle on a liquid diet. My crab salad had much too much mayonnaise (you know how I feel about mayonnaise) for my tastes and my salmon baguette - while an interesting mix of fish, dill and roquefort cheese - was, ultimately, too pedestrian for a dinner item (although as a lunch item and paired with a beer, it would have been a good fit). The onus was on me to do more research. I didn't. I thought I did but I didn't. My ill preparation, however, was compounded by the awkward atmosphere I felt from the owner. I always advocate going off the beaten path and trying to get a more local feel of a city. If I were to come back here, though, I would make sure I did it with a local... who spoke fluent Catalan.

The staff - lovely. The wine list - on point. The tapas menu - phenomenal. The tapas were a beautiful blend of traditional tapas and expertly re-imagined dishes. Every single dish we had was so fresh, so vibrant, and absolutely delicious. Rosal34 is a beautiful example of what I love about Spanish food - they let the food speak for itself. Even their tuna tartare, which had an Asian fusion interpretation to it, was expertly created in such a way that the Asian spices did not detract attention away from how fresh and good the star of the dish- the tuna - was. Another highly recommended dish - the asparagus with goat cheese. If you're like me and a diehard fan of goat's cheese - you will love this dish. The asparagus is blanched to perfection and perfectly balances the creamy sharp flavour of the goat's cheese. Absolutely delicious. My one gripe with Rosal34 was unfortunately the dessert menu as it was not up to par with the tapas. As much as I love the innovation in these tapas dishes, I felt the interpretation of some classic dishes like the Cheesecake or the Tiramisu was a bit too liberal for my taste. The cheesecake concept tasted more like a mousse in my book, and the tiramisu lacked that texture that comes from soaking the lady fingers in espresso and amaretto. Overall, great place for tapas and wine - not so much for dessert.
