La Venta is in many respects an unexceptional place to eat. In appearance it is elegant and unpretentious, the service is both courteous and discreet, and the food leans towards the traditional. But some happy convergence of favourable factors has made this place an ideal one to enjoy a long lunch. The light and breezy gallery in front is the most pleasant place; in late spring or early summer the bougainvillea here is a complete delight. Generally in places like this it is best to be advised there and then about what to eat; the season or the day of the week (for fish) is likely to determine to a large extent what's on offer, and adventurous eaters should abandon themselves to this delicious fate. It is well worth sharing the starters with others; there are often refined versions of typical tapas on offer, such as fine jabugo o bellota ham, tortilla (potato omelette), or pescadito (fried whitebait). Both fish and meat here are generally very satisfactory; dishes are never overly elaborate, and quantities are always well judged. The location is sensational, with spectacular views of the city from the Mirablau bar opposite the restaurant. read more
