Go here for some of the best ice cream, Mexican style. You will find good variety of flavors and nice variety on the menu. Be sure to try their Mangonada and Chamoyada desserts. They are made with their version of sorbets w/ chamoy sauce (I believe) and chilli powder. They are outstanding. I love this place. I have to try more items here. 4.5 stars. Went here after a couple of friends recommended it. Loved it. Had Mamey and Cajeta flavored ice cream. They were excellent in taste. Rich in flavor, smooth and dense in texture. Their scoop portions are huge. Price is good too. Inexpensive. Menu has good variety. Seems like one of the items called, 'Mangonada,' is really popular and looked really delicious. Be prepared to get overwhelmed with OPTIONS! So many paletas that I didn't know what to choose from. My friends and I came in for dessert. Initially, I was going to get a paleta, but I am very indecisive. I ended up buying 6 paletas to take home with me instead! I got guava, watermelon, strawberry with kiwi, mango leche, strawberry and creme, and coconut. The one I disliked the most was guava - although it tastes very much like the fruit itself, there were literal guava seeds in the entire paleta! That made it difficult to eat and enjoy. My favorites would definitely be the watermelon and the strawberry kiwi. I think I prefer the water-based paletas over the milk-based paletas because it's more refreshing and you can taste the natural fruit so well! I can't wait to go back so I can order more paletas to take home and enjoy! read more

La Plaza is a relatively new ice cream shop that offers an array of treats, ranging from your traditional sundae to 'cueritos' (a snack based on pickled pig skin topped with a few vegetables and served on rinds of flour). Only four stars are earned as it seems that this shop offers treats found in other ice cream shops without anything really standing out. I have tried their corn and strawberries and cream, along with a few 'paletas de nuez.' On the things that I have tried, I can say that I have had better, both in other ice cream shops and from street vendors. I did notice that their strawberries and cream are made from frozen strawberries, which I disliked since you have to wait a bit for them to thaw. What they have going for them is their location. Maybe I am not looking hard enough, but there is a scarcity of Mexican/Hispanic ice cream shops in the north side of Chicago, making this shop a treasure in this area. Keeps this in mind when you visit, as the demand for this shop does tend to create a bit of a wait, especially on hotter days, but then again this should be expected from any establishment offering refreshing treats. This is not your run of the mill ice cream shop where everything is made like clock-work. Other than the 'paletas,' everything is made to order, be sure to also take this into consideration before complaining about waiting in line. Overall, it's a nice shop offering delicious treats to a neighborhood otherwise having to rely on going to the southside or having to settle for Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin' Robbins in order to satisfy their cravings for these sorts of treats. read more

New ice cream shop, that is catching on like wildfire! This is a family owned homemade ice cream shoppe. Nice assortment of scoopable flavors as well as a ton more on a stick! Although Ice cream is their specialty, they also offer elotes in a cup, chicarones, as well as sundaes, floats etc.... and also make sandwiches. The owners happily offer tastes of any of the ice creams you are curious about. Which just makes you want to order all of them! I do wish they had a few more "common" flavors like mint chocolate or cheesecake. However, the more and more I go in here, I realize that they do offer new kinds but it's kinda like a "special of the week". Also, (and the owner said he was working on it) labels for the many many MANY ice cream flavors that he has would be helpful when trying to decide what to eat. Other than that I'm hooked. Prices are pretty good. You get a lot for your money. It's not super cheap, but definetly well worth it once you have a taste and see how much they scoop into a cup. Some highlights: 1)Try the chili lime popsicle...amazing! My fellow mexicans would love this! They also have tamarindo. 2) Mango smoothies...yum. (also have had the caramel cappucino smoothie also good) 3) Their oreo icecream is probably the best I've ever had. They offer it on a stick with a whole oreo frozen in the middle as well as scooped. 4) Pistachio ice cream has tons of REAL pistachios in it. Unlike Baskin Robbins that use almonds in their pistachio ice cream. 5) I haven't tried an ice cream I didn't like here. Their Dulce de Leche, Pecan, Pistachio, French Vanilla, Oreo, Vanilla/chocolate, and strawberry are among my favorites so far. Haven't tried them all yet. I'm sure I'll have more favorites. 6) They have lots of ice creams on a stick. More than what is offered scoopable. Water and Milk based popsicles and scoopables make this place great. This place has some of the best ice cream that I have ever had. I wrestled with the idea of giving in 5 stars and went back and forth. The quality of their ice cream is tremendous but the selection is just okay. They have lots of tables to sit at and it's bright inside with lots of colors. Don't get me wrong. They have a reasonable selection a flavors just not as many as some of the places that I have given 5 stars. This definitely is one of the better ice cream places in the city for sure. The owner is very patient and very nice and kind, he was able to to handle 4 excited happy google teenager girls laughing and screaming while being the only group in the store. I highly recommended to the owner to start doing delivery because it will increase his profits and he smiled. Very friendly environment and very good prices. $11.00 min charge for card and there is no free parking that I know of. Elotes r $3.00. If you show up around just opening when the owner starts to cook and prep the elotes wait is about 15 min and they r very very hot but so delicious when just made. The owner is so nice and respectful about people with peanut allergies and towards vegetarian....he ended up reducing the price of the snack if some things r not wanted in the snack. He's really good at recommending what would taste good on what. Gave us a sample of some nuts if we were interested that was part of the topping for one of the chips snacks. Very high quality homemade ice cream. The coconut ice cream is made with heavy cream and coconut shavings and yes the owner is so nice and packs the shit out of the $2.00 cup. 2-3 items will make u full. Everything taste so good. Complements to the chef.... literally told him "omg ur the best!!!!" First time here. The place was empty so service was quick. The people who attended us where really friendly. An older man and then a lady. We had mangonadas, it was delicious! We also had nachos, they were good to but you can't mess up nachos lol. Thank god they accept credit! It's just an $11 minimum. So if your going to just get something small make sure you take cash! I live close to this amazing paleteria and I have to say that its just so delicious I ve tried the flavored paletas all taste so original that u r so pleasantly amazed my favorite and which I'm guilty of eating once daily are the mangoneadas made of guava the flavor its just out of this world and for the record I have to say that I ve been to other paleterias in pilsen and around Mexican neighborhoods and order the same mangoneada thinking its going to melt in my mouth then I taste it and its disgusting I'm sorry but shaved ice disguised to taste like guava is so apparent Ur not fooling me and I never return. La plaza is so delicious u can taste the guava seeds in it making it 100% original I love this place to the owners if u read this. I looooooooooove u guys!!!!!!
