We walked in without a reservation. It's extremely busy. We were seated by the door which is very cold. I ordered the lobster ravioli and hubs had ghe lobster risotto. Both dishes were excellent. We were a little jealous of the folks ordering the wood fired pizza. Each one looked more delicious than the next. Popular with Skip The Dishes. Many deliveries being boxed up. We ate here several years ago and liked it a lot. This week we returned with friends and did not like it so much. It was very noisy, so it was hard to have a conversation. The food is over priced, and the toppings on my pizza were pretty skimpy. We have some excellent pizza restaurants in Halifax; this is not one of them. Too bad, it was nice to have a good place to eat in the neighborhood, but I don't think we will be back. read more

Reasonable coffee, shame about the service. When I entered La Piazza, I was looking for a coffee to sit in with in a proper cup or mug. I was feeling fed up with takeaway coffee and the ubiquitous paper cups. Not to mention the fact that they are environmentally unfriendly! So, I entered the restaurant and sat down at a vacant table next to the door. I was a little reticent, given that there was no cutlery or napkins on it, unlike all the others. A man in a white shirt and jeans, who I took to be Italian and the owner was sitting at a table and stood up asking me if I was looking for a table for 1. (I have been corrected about the owner. He's Lebanese). I said "Yes, but just for coffee". He went behind the bar and asked which size I was looking for, showing me 2 very similarly sized paper cups. I was surprised at the lack of crockery given the surroundings. The owner then did something that is, in my opinion, quite unforgivable in a sit down restaurant. He immediately rang up my order and pressured me into paying immediately. I really hope the people eating pizza were not treated the same way. To top it all, the coffee was distinctly average. So bad. Ordered a margherita pizza and caesar salad. The salad cost 12 bucks. Limp brown lettuce and a little tub of obviously bottled creamy caesar dressing with some bacon bits that had the texture of beef jerky. I could have bought this at Sobeys deli. Usually margherita pizza is fresh and flavorful...this was heavy gloppy mozza that completely weighed down the thin crust with a few bits of basil spread around inconsistently. Buy Italian from Superstore or Sobeys instead. Or go to one of the better Italian restaurants in the city. But if you buy from a grocery store, you will at least get better. I'm astonished at the reviews I've read about this place. However I am always suspicious about the reviewers when all of the five out of five star reviewers are fairly new and only reviewed two places. I might check this out with Yelp cause that is very suspicious. One reviewer said they had an incredible wine list. They have TWO red wines. That's barely even a list. My home has three. Soooo there's that. I have reviewed hundreds of places and this is one of the few that gets a 1/5 stars for multiple reasons. I almost didn't want to write a review because I generally love to be on the brighter side. Environment La Piazza doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. Or it is trying to cater to more than one style of restaurant experience. Their pricing is typical for a Halifax Italian restaurant, but definitely overpriced for the local neighbourhood they are in. If this was downtown, it would make more sense. Now if the food matched the pricing, then that makes some sense, but I'll get to the food (preview: worst Italian I've had in Halifax...I've been to most). So they sell you, or try, on the Italian element with the decor and the menu items. But the music is Top 40 countdown. I'm listening to pop music while paying Italian restaurant pricing. The two don't go hand-in-hand. You can't have both fine Italian dining and pop / techno music. The outdoors is a very patio, drink a beer with your friends kind of style. They advertise the beers they sell with big signs which is typical for a more university or local style restaurant. But again, do you want to be a local restaurant with good beer and pop music? Or do you want to be an Italian restaurant with red wine and classical, opera or just Italian style music? It's like going to a Mexican restaurant and listening to hard rock n' roll. If you are going to a place that serves food from a particular country, you are expecting a particular environment. Food I've never had a more tasteless pizza in my life! And I've had great Italian pizza in Halifax, New York and Italy! I have to give credit to my mother who made a good point that you could buy a frozen pizza from Superstore and put seafood on it, we had the Seafood Pizza, and it would taste so much better. But this didn't even have taste. I have a hard time describing it as bland because that implies you can taste something. The seafood was sparse and shredded into fine bits so much you couldn't really taste most of it. Staff The Hostess was somewhat nice but seemed a bit disinterested. The Waitress was pleasant enough. Neither did anything to go beyond the normal service you require but they weren't bad either. Conclusion For some crazy reason this particular location has a huge history of businesses coming and going. For whatever reason, people who start up businesses here don't understand that you have to first cater to the local neighbourhood and then deliver great tasting food. This place did neither. It almost feels like they thought they would be a high-class Italian restaurant, but realized that you are in a neighbourhood with families and they should be more of a family restaurant so now they are trying to backtrack. But their pricing does not match the quality of the food. I am not exaggerating when I say, if you make the same at your own home it will save you money and you will have a lot more flavour...actually you will have flavour in yours. read more

Most recent visit: a sunny Wednesday in early Sept 2019 for lunch. Arrived at about 11:50 and were seated at a table by the window. Two other tables were taken at the time, out of maybe 10 - I'd guess seating for 30 altogether? Friendly service. I tried the SEAFOOD OLIO ~ shrimp, scallops and mussels sauté with garlic extra virgin olive oil, fresh parsley and chili flakes tossed with linguine... 24.00, which was a good sized portion. Basic, not overly strong in any flavor, but satisfying. My friend had the QUATRO SIAGIONI ~ Tomato sauce, sausage, pancetta, soppersatta, pepperoni & fresh mozzarella... 18.00 which is a lot for one person, but he managed to finish it off. Definitely not what I call a personal pizza, better to share. He liked it though, thinner crust, decent flavor sauce, not too much or too little topping. For dessert I tried the Chocolate Fondant (says $9 online but was $10 on the real menu). Small portion of lava cake that took 5-10 mins in the oven (which the server advised in advance), with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a large dollop of whipped cream, sliced strawberry - very tasty. Hidden Gem that is NOT on the waterfront or in that milieu... Tucked into a residential neighborhood, serving really great offerings. Focused on wood-fired pizza and Italian dishes, but broad enough to cover less adventurous fare (i.e., burgers, grilled cheese, etc). We rolled in with a party of 7 (3 adults and 4 kids, 10-15yo) on a Tues night at 8:30 PM and it was like arriving at the home of a family friend. We started with a simple shared app of fresh mussels: ample portion, fresh, tender, served with wood-fire kissed flat bread and in an amazing tomato-based sauce that left me wanting to lick the bowl clean. There was a classic Caesar with grilled chicken that was generously portioned and nicely assembled. One of our group wanted a simple burger which arrived thick, juicy and perfectly cooked along with excellent fire-roasted mini potatoes. Another had Pistachio crusted salmon + fire oven roasted vegs which disappeared before anyone else could try... 'Nuff said. We shared several pizzas: Quattro Stagioni, Prosciutto Argula, and a Margherita, all served with airy, light, and lightly charred crusts and just the right amount of toppings begging for a NY fold to catch it all. This is NOT your standard commercial pizza - the combinations are artfully chosen and nicely balanced. A 12" pizza fresh out of the oven is just right for a full-size portion with maybe a slice left for breakfast. Beverage selection was small but very well paired with the menu, the small on-tap beer selection full of great locals. Wrapping up... I would not have stopped in here were it not for the Yelp! Night allowing us to try many different pizzas and the mussels. We enjoyed our time here that night. It was a social after all. I like the restaurant- the decor is nice and calming. I am reading good reviews on the patio and the grilled cheese. The servers were nice and smiling and checking on us regularly. So we will come back again and give it a try. We make our pizzas at home and I do like our pizza better than theirs. I tried about 5 versions and I had some really tasty bites but the consistency in my enjoyment from pizza to pizza and bite to bite varied so much that I'll stick to Mothers, Salvatore's and Morris East, and try other new places before buying the pizza here again. The wine list looked good. The craft beer selection is lacking (only two options from the same brewer). If we're feeling like pizza and beer, we'll stay home and save money. But, that being said, we'll keep our eye on this place because it's a nice spot, it's cozy, friendly servers, central to Haligonians and lots of parking available on the surrounding streets. I do love a great neighbourhood restaurant and was delighted to discover that La Piazza, just a 10 minute walk from home, is actually lovely. Great lunch special! I went for the simple Marguerita pizza and the homeade mushroom soup. It was delicious...and at only $12, quite a deal. My friend ordered the smoked salmon to start which was also simple yet scrumptious. Perfect lox with capers, red onion, and Melba toast. A wonderful appie, and the selection of other starters and non-pizza mains looked enticing as well. I'll be strolling back there this weekend for dinner...and wine. Best part? No cab fare. This place is a joke. I went for a friends birthday and ordered their caprese salad which says on their menu to contain tomato, cheese, and basil. When the salad came out, it had no basil, 3 sprigs of arugula, and two black olives? Why even have certain types of salad on your menu if you can't execute them properly. We also had the crab risotto balls which I'm convinced were strictly rice and had zero crab meat in them. Then came our margherita pizza which was also a let down. The pizza had 2 pieces of basil on it, lacked sauce and flavour, and was overdone. I emailed their owner to let them know that they can't be advertising things on their menu and serving something completely different. The owner got back to me and apologized and said he would mail me a gift card so we could return. Well, this was back in November when I emailed him my address and still no gift card. We will not be back to this place and I'm hoping this review serves as a warning for people to not eat here. read more

The wood oven pizzas at this place are incredible. If you're a mushroom lover I'd recommend the fungi. The bacon and caramelized pieces of onion were the perfect touch. There was also the slightest bit of heat to this pizza, not spicy but definitely was noticeable with every bite. I enjoy their patio and it is wonderful they keep it open late into the fall with heaters. I generally get a pizza and some salad but the last time I had pasta which was great. Overall, I have enjoyed my meals here. I like that I never feel rushed when I dine but sometimes I find myself looking for the wait staff so that I can get a drink refill or the bill. read more

I heard good things about the pizza here and on impulse decided to stop in with my two children to pick something up to eat at the playground across the street. As we were with our dog at the time we chose to wait on the patio. The restaurant did not have a single patron in it or on the patio. The owner came out without a hello or any kind of polite greeting, and was very narrow minded about our dog and so I politely informed him we would find somewhere else to get food. There was certainly a better solution than to turn away family customers, but he would hear none of it. I won't be back. read more

A few Sunday's ago, on a sunny day my brother and I were on our way to brunch at Coastal Cafe, when La Piazza's glorious outdoor patio caught our eye. We literally did a U turn and changed plans. It was kind of cool in the shade and I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt, so I requested an empty table in the corner that was somewhat sun exposed. The server really tried to insist we sit at another table completely in the shade, it kind of put me off. They did let us take the table we wanted, but not without attitude. I'm not sure what that was about. Our server got off to a great start, super friendly, he described the food well and helped us narrow down our choices. I went with a smoked salmon omelet and my brother had stuffed French toast. From there, service wise, things started taking a turn for the worse. Our coffee was bought out with no milk. After I waved someone over, we waited a full five minutes before we actually got the milk. Note, the restaurant was not that busy. When our food arrived, there was no cutlery on the table. Again, we waited a few minutes for that to arrive, while our food sat in front of us getting cold. That being said, we enjoyed our meals. Both meals came with a fresh salad and the smoked salmon omelet came with potatoes and toast, although I didn't touch my toast. It was cold and I had asked for the butter on the side, and after asking a second time, I still didn't get it, so I gave up. At one point our server came out to check on us and actually sat down. I'm all for causal, but it was too familiar. Overall, we had a nice brunch - the patio was beautiful, I had great company and the food was good. I've been on a pizza kick lately. Usually I'm a burger kinda gal, but pizza has caught my eye recently. The newest of my pizza adventures include La Piazza Resto. I was here last night and ordered a Mediterranean pizza to go. It was ready within minutes! Maybe even sooner. Serious super-fast. I kid you not. Usually I'm a meat pizza person, but something about zucchini and artichokes caught my attention. I'm so happy it did. It was delicious. It was very difficult for me to drive all the way home without eating a slice. My favourite thing about this pizza was the fresh basil on top and olives. I don't normally like olives, but I think I have a taste for them now. I really enjoyed the way the veggies were chopped. Is that weird to say? Large enough so that every bite was different, you could make different flavor combos in your mouth. I loved it. I ate half last night and took the other half to work today, but easily I could have eaten the whole thing last night. Also, tasted just as good the next day (today). That's gotta be the best feature about pizza... It makes for amazing left overs. Albert, the owner and chef is friendly, funny and passionate about his food. You can tell he looks for that same quality in the staff. The woman at the counter made some joke that actually made me laugh, and Albert made suggestions about what pizza I might like to try. I am really looking forward to patio season starting up. I think they have one of the best looking patios in the city! read more

It's OK. Wow I really enjoyed the handmade woodfired style pizza I found it a little over priced for what you get. Asking for vegan options was met with a puzzled stare by the server which was a little offputting. It's worth noting that the owner is anti-dog, which is a problem for us. We live very nearby and were so hoping to have a weekend morning coffee and bagel spot with our well behaved little dog on the patio, but the owner was quite abrupt in telling us no dogs that we won't be doing that. read more

For lunch, we ordered the mussels, calamari, (each came with a puffy pita bread), and the grilled cheese sandwich with house salad. Stopped for take out and the service was friendly, but an over priced menu for what you get. The vanilla lattes were over sweetened and one cup was only 3/4 full. The grill cheese wasn't that great, the jam in it should be seedless IMO and they should really get some special rustic bread to use because the grocery store white bread didn't stand up to the amount of filling. The side "roasted" potatoes were more like steamed, grey previously fried potatoes. All this for $45+ tip. No thanks! Prices are slightly above average. They earn bonus points for their great staff who are friendly, engaging and consistently provide excellent service. We arrived as a group of 16 to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday. We had a table upstairs and had the upstairs area to ourselves for the evening. My wife and I shared calamari as an appetizer and she also had the Raddicio salad. I had the Quattro pizza which was soooo good. And my wife had the Portobello Chicken with mushroom sauce. Our dishes were spectacular. As far as we know everyone in our group enjoyed their meal. The atmosphere was perfect for our group. One person in our party (my mother) did not get her entree as they missed putting her order in. So she had to wait about 5-10 minutes. When she did get her meal it was piping hot and thoroughly enjoyable... according to her! My wife and I ordered a few bottles of wine for the table and there was a good selection to pick from. Again, all enjoyable. No wine left! As far as service, when we arrived our waiter said he would look after us for the evening and he and another waitress sure did! Very attentive and also very familiar with their menu and drink choices. Our waiter even helped us out at the end with a group picture. One of the reasons we picked this place was that it was in the downtown area where parking can be difficult. We had couples coming from out of town so we figured this would be easier. We definitely do not feel we sacrificed anything by not eating downtown! Great find near intersection of Chebucto Rd. and North St. Nice vibe. We had the lunch time special of soup or salad and a 9" Pizza. One of the best Caesar Salads ever plus a great wood fired Pizza - Quatro Siagioni for me. DW had Mushroom soup and Margherita Pizza - also excellent. Service was excellent and price reasonable. I live in Halifax actually just down the street from La Piazza, so I visit on a regular basis, for lunch, supper with family on nights we don't want to cook, with friends for a quick lunch, the service is quick and efficient.About twice a month my partner and I drop in for supper or for dessert and coffee after the opera, or a concert at the Conservatory.The food is always fresh and the ambiance is warm and inviting.We like it very much and can have a few drinks as we just live on Duncan Street. Im so happy we have La Piazza in our neighborhood! You rock! read more

Really great pizza and service. So nice to have this in our neighbourhood. Some friends and I stopped in the day after they opened and the owners came out and spoke to us, it was really nice.
