La Pesca is a locally owned and operated Mexican style restaurant specializing in seafood, but also has plenty of options for those who prefer something else. It is also apparently quite popular with locals, which is a good sign! The location is easy to find on the corner of W. University Drive and 6th Ave. by the railroad tracks. The building is old and has probably been repurposed multiple times. There are just a few spaces to park directly in front but there are more places to park on the east side. The food was wonderful. The ceviche was mounded high on the tostada, a little salty, but mild; I added some of the salsa provided it was excellent. The seafood soup was also delicious and chuck full of fresh fish and shrimp. The broth was a typical Mexican style, but not spicy. The cocktail sauce is also Mexican style. Do not expect the traditional American style cocktail sauce with horseradish. This sweeter, tomatoey Mexican style cocktail sauce is what most want here. They do have plenty of Tabasco sauce if you prefer that. The Mar y Tierra botana platter for 2 was enough to feed at least 3 or 4. It came loaded with fish, shrimp, and fajitas along with multiple sides. My son really enjoyed it ...even as leftovers the next day. There are a few Americanized aspects: the fish on the botana platter was lightly breaded with what I think was a cornmeal /flour mixture, Southern style, and had a good flavor. The French fries also had a great light crispy coating. The platter included a couple of other American sides: onion rings and hush puppies. All these on top of chips (totopos), beans, and garnished with fresh avocado... This is a popular place, and seating is limited. So if you go on a Friday night like we did, be prepared to wait to be seated, and wait a while for your food. There was also a pretty long take-out line. Once the food arrived we really enjoyed it, but there was a significant wait. I'd like to return on perhaps a Monday or Tuesday night. The décor is rustic with a beachy yet homey feel (because of the old building). I've been to classier and fancier looking places, but but I don't think anyone goes to La Pesca for the ambience. They go for the food, and it is good enough to wait for if you happen to arrive at a busy time. read more

It's been awhile since I've updated my review of this local Edinburg establishment. Unfortunately, La Pesca is losing a star from initial review of the place. La Pesca is one of those places that has a great lunch crowd because it provides great value at lunch due to its low price specials however value alone can not sustain its third star. What good is value if the food is not up to par? Now La Pesca has a pretty decent ceviche. It's got zing, freshness and if you top it with their cilantro ranch and chulula hot sauce you got something special. Sadly, that's where the good ends. And frankly the value ends there as well. Me and a friend ordered the tacos de camarones especial. (Shrimp tacos). An order of these tacos consist of 3 flour or corn tortilla tacos filled with your choice of chopped grilled or fried shrimp, white cheese, grilled onions and cilantro. And a small side of Veracruz style white rice. The tacos while sounding delicious look sad as they are inconsistently filled. One Taco had barely any shrimp and was basically a quesadilla with grilled onions. The other slightly more but still very little shrimp. The third had more and one could taste shrimp but it's obvious the kitchen is skimping on the shrimp. For $12 dollars a plate I would expect each taco to be generously filled especially if you're chopping up the shrimp. Another friend ordered caldo de camarones (shrimp soup). I can't comment on it but he didn't finish it and it looked a bit oily. And still another friend ordered the Jumbo Shrimp plate. It came loaded with 6-7 jumbo fried shrimp. These were pretty tasty. However, at over $24 it was not a good value and seriously over priced. For about $20 one could order an entire seafood botana at Dirty Al's with way better shrimp. Just an outrageous price for shrimp of that quality. Overall, La Pesca is ok. The ceviche is still a winner and if you go and just have that you won't be disappointed. However, I can't recommend a whole lot else. But hey go and judge for yourself. read more

Hands down BEST Mexican seafood restaurant in the area. La Pesca used to be called La Jaiba, but the management at this location decided to change the name. The restaurant is located just east UTPA on University, and can be a little hard to find (it's in a repurposed old house on the south side of the road). It has a friendly, casual atmosphere, and I've heard that it gets pretty busy at lunch. I've never had a problem getting a table at dinner. For starters, let me just say that the CEVICHE is to die for!! Get it. My favorite main course menu items are the SHRIMP SOMBRERO (grilled shrimp, onions, peppers, smothered in melted Mexican cheese, topped with fresh tortillas) - it's just called "Shrimp" on the menu, and the FISH VERACRUZ. This happens to be one of the few food joints open past 9 on weekday near UTPA. I walked in with some friends like 20 till closing. The owner comes takes a seat at a table adjacent to ours and proceeds to give us an extensive rundown of the menu and several recommendations based on what we felt like eating. This seafood restaurant is one of the best in Edinburg. They have a good selection of dishes to please every guest. Kids also have good choices such as the fish basket. They also offer options for those in your party that don't like seafood. I recommend their grilled fish. Be aware though that it is not just plane grilled fish. It has some sort of coating that I always forget to ask about. It tastes good though. The fish tacos are a favorite. Also a favorite is their grilled fish "al mojo de ajo." Beware that the workers here try to charge you 18% gratuity on all To Go orders! Without warning and without being honest about it! I ordered to go 2 dishes, a soup and extra side. The soup was delicious, everything else was decent, not too bad. I initially paid with credit card without questioning the total until I reviewed the items i ordered again with the prices on their website and found the total should have been $10 less than I paid. So I asked the server who charged me for a menu with prices so I can verify my total as it seemed a bit too high - she immediately hesitated and proceeds to look for someone or something, not sure, until she returns to tell me that they don't have menus with prices listed. I asked then how I could verify and explained that I checked the prices on the website and it amounted to less than I was charged. Once again she hesitated and told me the prices on the website are no longer right as they've gone up since. I again asked for some type of verification to what I was charged for then. She goes to talk to another server, then I see her checking a menu, to which I now know DO have the prices listed. She then finally shows me not the menu, but my detailed receipt, (I was only given credit card machine receipt), which showed the prices charged exactly as listed on the website for all items and at the bottom an 18% gratuity tip. She claims the machine automatically adds it to all orders. After arguing how that is not possible and how it was illegal to charge me for something I did not approve of, she returned the tip amount in cash (after asking her coworker if she should) and stated that I was now aware of this automatic charge that occurs for ALL to go orders. I understand tips might not be as high during the pandemic as less people are eating out, but this is completely illegal and they tried to lie to me about it by telling me prices have changed and refusing to show me a menu until she had no choice but to be somewhat honest. So please check your totals as who knows who they pick and choose to try to charge extra tip to. read more

I admit it that the review is not reflective of the food at this place. However, the first taste at any restaurant is not the chips and salsa, it is the service. Much to my chagrin, the lady attending to my family seemed to be on edge and was rushing me to pick something from the menu as soon as I informed her we were only picking up something. Our order was over $40 so I inquired as to the complimentary seafood broth since we had already been waiting over 10 minutes. Her response, a callous and insensitive reaction, was to tell me in a loud and condescending voice that she was extremely busy. It was enough to create a very toxic environment. I have mixed feelings about this place. If you can put up with the horrible service, then you will enjoy some great food. When I go here I always order the Chicharones de Pescado, which are great, their tartar sauce is the best, fresh corn tortillas, great pico de gallo, their shrimp nachos are great also, i HIGHLY recommend them. Now on to the negative, their service really needs an overhaul, do not get me wrong its great food, but if you want to order, eat, and leave in under about an hour and a half, then by all means go elsewhere. I would not recommend for anyone on the run. On top of that the waitresses hardly ever come to check up on you to see if you are ready to order, or get you a refill, that has been my experience on the numerous times I have been here. First and foremost the food is very good. Forget the complimentary garnish every Mex place offers, the cup of complimentary seafood broth was exceptional. My BIL's ceviche was above average. The unidentified oyster on the 1/2 were small and tasty and a relative value at $7.99 a 1/2 doz. The tacos camarones (3 to a plate) were grilled and seasoned perfectly and served with a cup of seasoned rice. The highlight was my wife's camarones al ajillo. The sauce was sublime. HOWEVER, never had heard of a restaurant that charges for the platter and then an additional 1.99 for the sauce. Really? They serve cold beer, both locals like Shiner Bock and a few choice Mexican imports. The place is tiny, crowded and loud. They could use something to abate the sound. This was my first time here. It was recommended by a colleague. The salsa and consumè was very delicious a burst full of flavors. I ordered their special which was the fried fish & shrimp for $8.99. To be honest the neither had much flavor. The fish is clearly frozen and may have been a bit under cooked, the shrimp I had was okay but expected more. The servings are great for the price but I will definitely have to try something else before I can make an honest decision on whether rate this place more than a 3 stars. Some of the menu items did seem a bit pricy but I shall give them a try as that may be there specialty. For now I'm only rating 3 stars because of taste and food quality. Employees eating over the chip bin near the drink station, ranch and tarter sauce at room temperature (off temp and accumulating possible bacteria) because they are left out on the table, and I'm not really sure their idea of baked is what most would consider baked. It was like a slimy, soggy, breaded under cooked fish. what really set me off and made me have to pull over on the side of the road and vomit was the parasite I found in my fish after I had eaten about half of it. It was long, white, ans stringy and had the texture of a rubber band, yup, this was a worm... groooooossssss The manager did comp my meal and I would not have complained if I had not been eating their semi cooked fish with worms in it. To start,this was one of my favorite places for my seafood fix.As I was watching tv,the owner was on a local tv fishing show.Soon me and my family were headed to la pesca for lunch,cause dam those commercials looked great of la pesca.Must say looks are deceiving.As soon as we walked in there was a bad vibe,waiter just sat us down and took off.Waited 10 minutes no menu,nothing.We found this to be very strange.When we asked for menus,it was literally thrown to us.By this time we had enough and walked out.So much for my fix.Sir(MARCUS),your seafood is second to none,but your CUSTOMER SERVICE needs a lot of help.If people are not happy with there job,they shouldn't be working.Oh well just thaught you should know...Hopefully next time things like this wont happen,and if there is a next time. read more

This place has gone down hill quickly. Ordered the special for the day; two fish filets (fried), three shrimpt (fried), french fries, hush puppies, and a small salad. The fried fish was soggy on the outside and mush like on the inside. Another member of the group I was in showed my their fish, and it wasn't completely cooked. Pretty gross. Will not be eating here again. In addition, trying to get in and out is a pain due to limited space. When you go to pay your bill you are crammed up against all the other tables/customers who are eating there. As we were leaving we saw 5-7 people standing around the register (up against eating customers) waiting for a table. Not sure why it's so busy. Paid $13 my plate of nasty fish. read more
