Alright... time to give it up and announce my number 1 place to get ropa vieja is now La Palma! Seriously, I can be rather picky about ropa vieja but I gobbled this one right up. The flavors were there and the texture was amazing. I find sometimes if it cooks too long it can become *too fine*. This however was perfectly shredded. Now the black beans.... Absolutely delicious. They arnt my favorite I've ever had but they will be taking the #2 spot. I prefer soup-y beans and this was just the right consistency. You may have noticed I got white rice.... It's honestly because I wanted to be able to eat it with the beans & ropa vieja without the flavors interfering. There were two other options, and perhaps I'll try them in the future, but this time I was glad I got plain white. The building is located off Preston and has a smaller parking lot, but usually has a few spots open. there was some seating inside but i chose to grab it and go. I noticed a cute neon sign with the name, i wish i would've grabbed a picture! thats okay.. it gives me an excuse to come back sooner;) Last thoughts: Best ropa vieja Ive ever had. Huge portion at a good price. Yummy rice & beans. Can't wait to revisit!

So a small hole in the wall again... and food was home made and delicious. We went later in the evening and it was close to closing time it was empty so ambiance was good. Fairly priced for all the food you get. Customer service was great!!

Delicious, high quality food in a no-frills setting. We found this place on Yelp and we're very pleased with the food and service. They have about 6 different meals with choice of rice and side. I ordered the bistec encebollado and my husband ordered the chicken. Both were delicious!

I've been on the hunt for for an authentic Cuban experience, and I do believe I have found it with restaurant La Palma. I would say that this restaurant is off the beaten Path. You will not be able to find this unless you are actively searching for it. The restaurant itself you will see mostly everything in Spanish but they do have English menus available... I got the pork with yellow rice and also added sweet plantains and some potatoes. The pork was so flavorful and tender, and the yellow rice compliments it very well... the plantains were soft and fried and so sweet it. Oh my goodness it is a amazing.!!!!! Overall, I'll give this place five stars and I will definitely be back for more..... bone app a Titty

This new Cuban place on Preston Highway has it going on. Super friendly service and good cheap eats. Combo plates are $9.99. Choose a meat, a rice and a side. Today they had lamb shank, brisket, beef stew and chicken stew to choose from. They also had a couple of soups and empanadas. I chose the lamb shank with the rice congris and fried plantains. The portion was enormous. I'm stuffed and I have more than half left for lunch tomorrow. Give these guys a try, you will not regret it.

I mean, I have certainly been more times than my last review suggests. In fact, I definitely…read moresupported them with take out during COVID on more than one occasion. But I felt it was important to keep the reviews fresh and poppin, ya know? Anyway I tried the Chorizo con Bacon for the first time and it was really good, my only recommendation is to cook them just a tiny bit more, because i dont know about you but I cant handle undercooked bacon. My go to, the Cubano sandwich with sweet potato fries, is stellar as ever. You can never go wrong with this pick. Of course everything else is great, service, atmosphere, this is a jewel of the highlands neighborhood.

My wife and I ordered the same steak, prepared the same way--medium rare--but hers was incredibly tender while mine was unusually tough, sinewy, and difficult to cut, let alone chew. (those were my em dashes btw) After cutting into both steaks, it was clear they had been cooked properly, so this wasn't a kitchen issue. Sometimes a supplier simply sends an inconsistent cut of meat. What mattered was how the restaurant responded. The staff immediately offered several options: remove it from the bill, replace it, prepare another one to take home, or do whatever else was necessary to make sure I still had a great experience. That is the mark of a restaurant group that consistently "gets it" and truly understands its customers and community. The mezcal Old Fashioned is definitely worth trying if you enjoy a smoky drink. It isn't nearly as aggressively smoke-flavored as some of the "smoke box" Old Fashioneds served elsewhere. The mezcal gives it just the right amount of character and fits the restaurant's atmosphere perfectly. The beans, rice, and sauces were all excellent. The guacamole with plantain chips is practically a must-have. At this point, I've tried nearly the entire menu and have never regretted stepping outside my comfort zone. The next time you visit, try something you might not normally order and you may discover a new favorite. Kudos to the entire staff, especially Lisandra. And be sure to finish with the chocolate cake and ice cream!

Apparently there was a party of 30; I'm impressed by the kitchen that my food came out fast and delicious. We were a little disappointed with the lag of response time when we first sat at the bar area however....once we ordered the yucca cheese bites it transported me back to when I was living in So Cal eating the classic "Cheese on a Stick". I would come back just for these alone! We ended up having a few drinks, appetizers and a to-go order of two entrees but once we got home one of the entrees was missing a side. After calling the restaurant and speaking with Lorrena we were able to get a refund for our missing side. I absolutely love yucca mojo and was so looking forward to trying their version. Maybe this mishap presents a future visit to try what we were missed out of. Yet again, I'd go back simple for the yucca cheese bites! I would also like to add, pricing was exceptionally reasonable. I hope you all enjoy this place as much as we did, but when placing a to-go order; double check what you paid for before you leave. Gracias Loreena for rectify the situation.

Leave it to my family to find a Latin store in Kentucky. My cousin had to have his Cuban coffee,…read morenot an espresso. Lol. Well, this place had most of the Cuban staples like croquetas and pastelitos. They took advantage of ordering lunch as well for the trip. They ordered a croqueta preparada and a rabo encendido (ox tail) and they were very much enjoyed. I had a pastelito de carne (meat turnover). It was not like the ones in Miami but I could not complain since I was just glad to have a taste of home. They also had all kinds of Latin produce and ingredients. It was not so busy when we came in but it was packed when we left therefore check times to get in and out faster.

Because of that, the food was a little limited, most of the items they had out were nearing the bottom, and they didn't have many things out. Because of the lack of lack of options I decided to get the cubano sandwich, the tres leches cake, & a drink. The sandwich was massive. I ate one half and saved the other to give to my husband. I wasn't the biggest fan of the ham they used, but my husband liked it all the same. I was a fan of the bread! Not sure how they made it so good and crispy, but it was amazing. The sandwich itself was just okay. The tres leches cake. I really loved the icing (the pink one). The cake was good but I don't think it was moist enough. It was a two tier cake so perhaps that's the reasoning. I got the small one (about $7) and it was easily enough for 4 decent size servings. Overall a cute little local place & I can't wait to go back for bread and other desserts!

It was a really pleasant setting for dinner. Service was attentive. The scallop ceviche was the standout. The bay scallops with poblano-serrano vinaigrette, cucumber, roasted corn, onions and cilantro were fresh and flavorful, and the malanga chips were a great addition. We loved this starter. We also had the Tacos de Lengua. The braised beef tongue was tender and tasty, served on handmade corn tortillas with onions, cilantro and mashed avocado. The Mole of the Day featured ribeye with Veracruz chocolate mole, along with braised cabbage with apples and bacon. The flavors were good, although the presentation wasn't quite what we expected--the mole came in a small cup alongside the ribeye rather than being incorporated into the dish. And my piña colada was yummy--definitely a win. Overall, a very enjoyable meal in a charming outdoor setting. The scallop ceviche was the highlight and something we'd happily come back for.

They take "farm to table" very seriously here. Almost everything on the menu lists the origin farm…read moreor other source of the main ingredients. This includes the waitstaff. My waitress Rebecca included this info in every one of her answers to questions about menu items, without fail and from memory. I was feeling salad-deprived and this one definitely appealed. The name "Summer Salad" gives nothing away but it was the description that got to me: watermelon, jicama, chayote, oranges, mint, feta cheese, currants, pepitas, cashews, mint-coconut-ginger vinaigrette. A fantastic riot of flavors, crunchy vegetables, perfectly and lightly dressed with the unique vinaigrette. Everything was at the peak of freshness, full of flavor. Radishes and jicama sweet and juicy, the mandarin orange segments obviously hand cut from a fruit, not dumped from a can. I wasn't familiar with chayote, sliced into shoestrings. It reminded me of unripe pear or maybe a firmer cucumber. A truly memorable salad; I don't say that often. As an authentic Mayan restaurant you won't find Tex-Mex here. The closest thing would be the Tacos De Lengua (that's beef tongue) Grass-fed and from a local farm of course. For a vegetarian maybe Mushroom Enchiladas would appeal: housemade corn tortillas, mushrooms, black beans, chihuahua cheese, tomato casera sauce, queso fresco, kale & frisée. I was more intrigued by the Mole Of The Day which as the name suggests, changes daily. Described as "locally sourced, sustainably raised meat, Veracruz chocolate mole, roasted broccoli." That day it was a ribeye from Berry Farms. I've only had mole with chicken before but I gave it a try. Glad I did. The steak, though thin, was seared a perfect medium-rare, almost fork-cut tender and juicy. It was served atop the mole and they didn't skimp. There was plenty of this thick, aromatic sauce hinting of so many flavors I couldn't quite identify. The chocolate was surprisingly subtle and didn't become obvious until later. A perfect balance of flavors, fairly mild yet just assertive enough to stand up to the steak. I ended up getting too many vegetables. I already mentioned the delicious salad. And the steak also came with roasted broccoli and carrots. They were perfectly cooked and would have been sufficient. But I forgot the steak came with the vegetable side so I also ordered a Summer Veggie Mix (broccoli, carrots, green beans, squash). Each vegetable trimmed and cooked to its own peak of perfection then the whole thing lightly dressed in a sweet glaze. Very good. I also forgot that I had asked about the lima beans which sounded interesting and Rebecca said that because it was my first time they were on the house. These arrived with my steak as well. So many vegetables! I took some home and about 1/3 of the steak. Listed on the menu simply as "Tok Sel Lima Beans" they were the highlight of the meal, vegetable-wise. I Googled it and only Mayan Cafe web pages came up. It's apparently their invention and they list the recipe! I'll have to try making it; so good. The ground, roasted pumpkin seeds, coarsely torn parsley leaves, green onions, and fresh lime completed this dish. Drinks menu included many intriguing specialty cocktails featuring smaller, eclectic brands of spirits. Many tequilas and whiskies. One of the offerings was "Black-Owned Bourbons," a flight of 4 from black-owned companies. Local beers only. As for sodas, you won't find Coke or Pepsi on this menu, just some small craft brands I haven't heard of. Kudos! I tried the Blackberry Smoke: "Mal Bien zacate limòn mezcal, Narano bitter orange liqueur, epazote syrup, blackberry." Wonderful smokiness from the mezcal, cool and refreshing with crushed ice, a riotous crimson-fuchsia color from the crushed, partially pureed blackberries. Alcohol strength seemed about right for this kind of drink. For dessert I had Dark Chocolate Torte: cayenne, pecan & cashew crust, fresh fruit. The torte was chocolatey with an unexpected light texture almost like a mousse. The cayenne and cinnamon gave it a slight kick. The fruit sauce drizzled on top and on the plate was tangy and aromatic. The fruit was a generous bunch of blueberries, large like the New Jersey farmed kind but sweet and tangy like the wild Maine kind. Nothing, not even fruit on the torte, is an afterthought here. Other positives include the ambience and service. The outside covered space had widely spaced tables and comfortable chairs, individual table lamps, many plants and patio lights, attractive blue-lit bar, and fans (noisy but needed to manage the heat and the flies; not their fault). Vocal music in Spanish was quiet and chill. My waitress Rebecca knew the menu completely, and checked on me frequently. She even noticed as I was battling the flies and hurried over to finish boxing my leftovers ahead of schedule. Also the maître d came by as I was finishing up to inquire. I truthfully answered that it was one one of the best meals I've had in some time.
