Another great find for Mexican food! Ya'll. I have been searching high and low for good Mexican in this city and was starting to think it just didn't exist. I know most people are going to be like, "but Angie, you have the best food on the planet in Lafayette. Why in the world are you looking for Mexican?" Well, while you're not wrong about the best food on the planet part, ya girl likes variety. La Pagua has been recommended to me before and I tried it once about a two years ago and found it to be just mediocre. I decided to give it another try not too long ago and was so impressed I ate there twice that week. Their tacos are all pretty good but the barbacoa is the BEST. I recommend trying out a few just to see which one you like because they are really affordable and all delicious. But I am going to bet you'll love the barbacoa one the most. I judge all Mexican places on their burrito and their chicken and shrimp passed my test with flying colors. I've dined in once and the atmosphere is upbeat and fun. Go give La Pagua a try!

I was so deeply disappointed in La Pagua. Moving back to Lafayette, I'm on a slow hunt to find new favorites. Building up a restaurant list requires you to have good and bad experiences. I was not a fan of La Pagua... The prices are quite high for Mexican food. $15 for 4 tacos is quite steep. I also ordered the sampler appetizer as my main entree and it was $17!! Everything served was dry and bland. Lacking flavor, juiciness, and cheese. The queso was served in a small plastic cup for sauces, and hardened almost as soon as it hit the table. The only thing that I liked was the chips and salsa...and I'm typically not a tough critic when it comes to Mexican food. It's not what I was imagining when I wanted Mexican. Maybe this is more authentic? Two dishes and one soda, our bill was almost $40 without tip... I don't think I'll be coming back.

An Absolute Hidden Gem for Authentic Flavor in Lafayette! If…read moreyou are tired of the same old, watered-down Tex-Mex and want a meal that hits you with incredible, vibrant flavor, you need to get to La Papa Loca. This place is easily one of the best spots in town for genuine Mexican and Honduran comfort food. The absolute star of the show is their namesake dish, The Papa Loca. Forget everything you think you know about baked potatoes. They take a massive, perfectly baked potato, load it up with rich butter, melted mozzarella, fresh cream, and your choice of beautifully charred, seasoned meats like al pastor or arrachera (skirt steak), all served up with crisp tortilla chips. It sounds like a wild combination, but it is pure, comforting magic. Everything else on the menu hits the mark, too: The Street Tacos: Served the right way with fresh cilantro, diced onions, and incredible homemade salsas that pack a beautiful punch. The Gorditas & Tortas: Crisp, fluffy, and stuffed generously with perfectly seasoned meats that are never dry. The Atmosphere & Drinks: The vibe is incredibly welcoming and down-to-earth. Plus, if you catch their happy hour, their 2-for-1 margaritas and micheladas are the perfect refreshing pairing to the savory, rich food.  The staff is always friendly, the portions are massive for the price, and the food comes out hot and fast. Whether you are hitting up the Johnston Street location or grabbing food to go, La Papa Loca delivers an authentic, satisfying meal every single time. Don't skip this place--it's a local treasure.

However, it helps the place gain the whole hole-in-the-wall fact. I've been to El Potrillo quite a few times now. Enough to know what my favorite dish is--a white enchilada with Spanish rice. Out of the many times I've gone, I've only had one bad experience where the food was not cooked enough. Not a big deal, in my opinion. The atmosphere at the restaurant is genuine and one of the best out of all the Mexican places I've been to. The pricing is amazing, the service is very responsive (they actually check on you frequently!), and it's one of the best. I have no reason to give this place anything but a five-star review. Thanks!

I have passed this restaurant…read morefor years and never thought to stop, but this particular evening I was in the mood for a true Taco Tuesday which for me means a good margarita and plenty of chips and salsa. My family joined me and the atmosphere immediately felt local and customer focused. The complimentary chips and salsa set the tone. The salsa had a distinct and fresh flavor with a light kick. It did not taste canned, and I even overheard another table asking if the recipe had recently changed. Whatever they are doing, it works. I ordered the fajita quesadilla which was a nice portion and came with rice and beans that were both enjoyable. My margarita was not as strong as I prefer. I do not need to taste the alcohol, but I at least want to feel like I am not drinking juice. My parents ordered the Texas fajita which came with four meats including chorizo, chicken, shrimp, and steak. They were genuinely impressed and said they would order it again. Overall, I would definitely return. This spot earned a place on my list for an easy and satisfying weeknight dinner.
