Chilaquiles. (with beef by default)
Mike B.

Good, but I'm interested in how the restaurant progresses over time. We ordered takeout, and the online ordering page was unavailable. Not a big deal: we just called the restaurant and placed an order. One issue that we encountered was that some number of items on the online ordering page were not actually available for ordering around lunchtime. That might just be a result of the restaurant being relatively new. In terms of the food, there was some good and some bad. The various salsas (roja and verde) were good. The roja was extremely mild, and the verde had a bit of a kick. The pico de gallo was about as expected, but it benefitted from a squeeze of lime. The chips were phenomenal. A perfect pairing for the various dips. The tacos were fine, but not exceptional. We ordered one shrimp taco and one fish taco. The fillings were reasonable, but not exceptional. Some additional toppings and extra sauces were helpful, but the experience still seemed flat. The chilaquiles were very good, but the online menu we had been referencing didn't mention the fact that they included a steak topping. Some of the menu photos on Yelp do seem to call that out. That says to me that they need to publish an official menu somewhere: the currently available information is less than clear. All told, this was a nice destination. The location was a little hard to get to, but there was reasonable parking available. The staff were friendly, and the space was nicely presented. Well worth checking out, but not exactly optimized for a vegetable forward experience.

A best kept secret that I'm hoping gets out to the world! Stopped in for lunch today and from the time I walked in the door into the time I left, everything was absolutely top tier. The restaurant is decorated perfectly for the aesthetic of authentic Mexican food and, even more importantly, is unbelievably clean. But the food.... Wow, the food. I ordered three different kinds of tacos and the meats on each tasted expertly cooked and the house hot sauce was delicious. I ordered a side of guac, which also tasted like it was made seconds before being brought to the table. Lastly, the employees were all super accommodating and genuinely all seemed to be happy to be there, which is a huge plus. I don't get to the south hills often but I'll be making a special trip back time and time again. A++++++++++

The definition of La Oaxaqueña means an inhabitant or native woman from the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. I've never been to Oaxaca before, so I cannot say I am an expert on authentic Oaxacan cuisine, but I will say I did enjoy my meal here. This restaurant is located in what seems to be a former house in Bethel Park, hidden off of the main road. It's easy to miss if you aren't specifically looking for it. We had a party of five, and were celebrating a birthday. The server was very nice and she was very accommodating. Most of our party enjoyed the food although one dish came out incorrect, but a replacement was made right away. The birthday boy enjoyed a dessert of Tres Leches cake with a candle on top ... very nice!! I would come back again ... Cheers!

Chicken tamale - very spicy!

This authentic Mexican restaurant is quaint and cozy. The waitress is extremely friendly. The food was delicious. When entering, you will receive a basket of chips with salsa. The cheese dip was pretty good. We will be back.

The staff were all really friendly and accommodating. Mezcal Margarita - sticky, sweet, sour, just the right hit of smokiness. Strawberry Margarita (on the rocks) - perfect sour base, the strawberry takes it to another level. Strawberry Mojito - super minty, insanely refreshing. Chorizo Cheese Dip - salty, savory, creamy perfection. We almost licked the bowl clean, no lies. Queso birria Tacos (w/ rice & beans) - I'm calling it right now: hands down the best birria I've EVER had. The corn tortillas were crisped to perfection. Plus, cilantro on the side? Huge win in my book. Chicken Chimichanga - totally loaded and the chicken was so juicy and well-seasoned. The queso on top was fire!

A half chile relleno, also with peppers and onions. A side salad. Some vegetarian refried beans. Overall, it was a good combo. Not spectacular, but nicely crafted. I probably should have ordered some salsa or hot sauce on the side, and it would have been nice to be prompted for that option. Overall, this is a comfortable destination. Reasonable food. Excellent service. Nice space.

I got the viva sampler, and everything from the taquitos to the Mexican street corn tasted like cardboard. I took the chicken out of the taquito to see if maybe it was just the tortilla, no - it was just flavorless. The sauces it came with were the only things that were halfway decent. Then, my sister and I decided to split the flan and tres leches. Mistake numbers two and three. The flan was grainy and the tres leches has no flavor - where was the cinnamon the spices the sweetened condensed milk. Those were terrible. The mocktail was just overly sweet juice with no real thought or effort put into it. For $54 - I expect more. It's overpriced. It's flavorless. And the atmosphere was nonexistent. They're charging for nonexistent "vibes" and neon signs. Not worth it. The service was just okay. Plaza Azteca is the superior choice if given the option.

Anytime my mom and I are out near Shadyside, we love to eat there. We love Mexican food and they do it so well. My husband loved his pozole soup. I had the tortilla soup today and it had such great flavor. I would be easier to eat if the tortilla strips in it were a little bit smaller. The birria tacos were phenomenal. The shredded beef is so tender and has the most amazing flavor. They're also super cheesy. The consommé really made it too. The chimichangas are very crunchy and you can't go wrong with any protein you choose. The guacamole is so creamy and tasty. Their chips are really good too. I have never had a drink there but they always look good. Go check them out if you like Mexican food. We have loved everything we have tried and you will too. Absolutely loved the birria tacos. It is great for a date, a visit with friend, or a chance to scratch that taco itch. Now, their tacos are so good. My favorite is the chicken taco (sounds boring?); these tacos are amazing. Guacamole cream, kale, and spiced chicken. I also had chicken and chorizo, which is very good, but that chicken one is the bomb!

Both of my grandmothers were your typical Hispanic women who made the best Mexican food I had growing up. Living in Pittsburgh, most Mexican restaurants I have visited usually miss the mark and I typically never return. Not with Buenatarde! I usually avoid eating at Mexican restaurants in Pittsburgh, as I'm always disappointed with the quality of the food. Most restaurants seem to use premade ingredients, which is insane cause Mexican food cooked fresh is usually not that hard or expensive. Not with buenatarde, everything we ordered was made in house. The refried beans and rice tasted almost as good as my grandmothers use to cook. Not quite, but close! The carnitas tasted really good, the only issue we had was it was a tad dry. Not sure if it was overcooked, but it did taste good. Otherwise, everything else was great and we will be returning to try the brunch on a weekend.

We'd go back again and try the brunch menu or another protein.

The filling is already super flavorful, so you don't necessarily need extra toppings, but I like adding extra onions and cilantro. For me, a lot of the salsas were extra spicy, so my recommendation is to taste them before putting them on the taco. The ones I got honestly didn't need any extra added flavor. I got the steak and onions and the pork with pineapple and loved them both equally. I got them last week and already miss them - the smell and texture of the meat, the fresh toppings, how your breath tastes after, the combo of everything together - definitely a solid taco joint
