After hitting the ball more times than I want to admit too at Apple Valley Golf Course we decided…read moreto drive down the mountain to Lake Lure to celebrate or for some to drown their sorrows and have a few cocktails and beers at El Lago. This is a spacious restaurant but unfortunately there were very few customers today so we were able to grab a seat at the small bar in the back of the restaurant straight away from the entrance they also have a large patio for outdoor seating. The staff here was very friendly and eager to grant our every wish, the draft beers are large and cold and lucky for me they serve Dos Equis Amber on draft which is one of my favorites to start before switching over to a top shelf Margarita (Don Julio) which are the same price as the house margaritas $16.50. The staff set us up with warm tortillas and salsa and introduced us to the "salsa bar" which had a number of different salsas and with different levels of heat so pick your poison and chase it with the drink of your choice. The restaurant appeared clean but although they weren't busy there were still bus bins filled with dirty dishes sitting around which I thought was odd. All in all we had a great experiences the pours were generous but it's not cheap. We decided not to eat here and our tap was still well over one hundred dollars without gratitude for the four of us - it's definitely a place I'd returned to for the margaritas...

Service was slow and the waitress seemed disinterested in our table. The restaurant was very grimy and the bathrooms were unpleasant. I would go if I was really craving Mexican food but it wasn't a great experience.

I love how they stuff their burritos with guacamole, grilled onions, and lots of other goodies. Today I also tried their flan. They have the traditional and a chocolate flavor. You obviously can't beat the traditional flan, BUT I loved the flavor of the chocolate flan plus it's topped with a layer of the traditional flan. Best of both worlds. :-) I meant to take pictures but I couldn't wait to dive in. (PS: thank you for the cilantro!)

Don't let the gas station it's located in scare you because this is hands down one of the best Mexican restaurants I've been to. You order at their kiosk and can either get it to go or sit in their small dining area. The person who took our order was super friendly and more than willing to answer any questions we had. You can see directly into the kitchen and it is very well kept! Looks extremely clean and put together. Our food came out within 10 minutes and it was freshly prepared. The chips and guac were AMAZING!! There is no need to drive to a chipotle because this is 10 times better. I had the steak quesadilla and it was some of the most juiciest and tender meat. I don't even like frijoles and these were delicious. Everything was flavored perfectly. Absolutely will be returning here. Would love to try their version of birria. Can't wait to go back!!

I shoehorned myself in there and asked the guys on either side of me what they thought. One was a regular, the other also a newbie like me. The newbie said his loaded nachos were very good, but too big. I didn't want a lot. The regular told me I couldn't go wrong with the street tacos. The bartender confirmed. She was awesome, but didn't catch her name. Very nice, knowledgeable and attentive. I was going to order two steak tacos, but the bartender thought I should try the carnitas for one of them. They were both good, but the carnitas was excellent. Should have done both as carnitas! They came with a nice serving of rice and beans that were actually good! It's a big place right on Merrimon and like many restaurants on that street, parking is at a premium. There are like five spots on the side street right next to the building, but if you don't get one of those, you be walking either on the side street behind the building or across Merrimon. I was on the side street about two blocks behind the building at about 5:45pm. It's free parking, but plan accordingly. You may be walking a bit.

We both ordered the chicken Tinga tacos with rice and beans and I thought they were phenomenal, they weren't my husband's favorite, but I would definitely order again.
