We've found ourselves in this particular moment, him 5 years sober, me 26 and often confusing experiences of pain and pleasures on the thin ice of addiction. Today we are in wisconsin, visiting family, having coffee to stay at a cafe my grandma recommended we go to. She has my tiny brother, so it's just my dad and I, how things were for 16 years. We work as a team to find free parking. We love doing team things to save a dollar, a minute, or find a loophole. We decide on our coffees, and when the barista asks if we'll have them to stay my dad says yes, which brings a smile to my mind. He suggests we share this berry oat bar thing. One thing I find so charming about his sobriety is his need for sweets. It's somewhere in trainspotting 2 that mark tells spud "you'll always be an addict. You just have to find something else to get addicted to." I think of this when i see him with a big fat bowl of ice cream after dinner and a new exciting hobby every other month. I think of this when I consider what my life might be like if I decide to admit some things to myself sooner than later. But right now it's me and my father, having coffee to stay in cute mugs, no rushing, no changing things, just farting around in a midwest summer.

I attended an event that used Grounded Cafe for catering, and I was given an opportunity to try their chicken-salad sandwich and some soup called a corn chowder. So, my review wholly concerns their chicken-salad sandwich and their corn chowder. The corn chowder was okay, with large chunks of potatoes, but, for a chowder, the liquid base was a bit too thin. The flavor, too, was a bit underwhelming. Now, for the sandwich... I didn't like it. For starters, and most notably, the sandwich was crafted using terribly low-quality bread. From it's look, to its texture, to its size it was low-quality. This is not surprising; photos on Grounded's website show people preparing sandwiches using cheap, Walmart bread. Now, for the chicken salad filling: it was like pureed chicken; no chunks, no segments bigger than the corn in the corn chowder. Also, it was seasoned with far too much thyme. So, in summation, a fine organization (based upon their mission) but they serve low-quality fare. How charitable you'd like to be with your wallet and palate is all up to you.
