$14 Mofongo con Camarones.

GET THERE EARLY! My fiance and I decided to go to New Haven to check out the food trucks for our anniversary since so many friends have raved to us about them. Upon arrival it was apparent that every food truck there was either Mexican food or Puerto Rican food. I went to one food truck with Puerto Rican food and ordered only a chicken empanada and a Piña Colada because that was basically all they had. We finally settled on going to La Jaltera, not really sure why...maybe because it was the next closest Puerto Rican food truck with a varied menu. We waited in line for approximately 45 minutes only to be told that nothing as far as frituras were available. I settled on the mofongo con camarones. It tasted about right, just missing a bit of crunch and some more garlic. The small salad that was included was a nice surprise. That said... it didn't live up to the $14 price tag. BTW...CASH ONLY.

We are very blessed . . …read more That our area of Southeastern Connecticut has such a large Puerto Rican population - - or we may have never tasted the wonderful food that this restaurant offers. One of the best, if not THE VERY BEST, restaurants in the local area. My only concerns: 1) I didn't see a bathroom, but I didn't need one ‍; 2) we could have used a knife for the pork stick, but we should have asked. The staff is extremely helpful. Wonderful designs, with lots of inspiration. Now for the food: - Chicken Steam Plate: Chicken leg, rice & beans, fried plantain pieces. Chicken super moist, rice was outstanding, & plantains were very tasty. - Beef Stew: very good, similar to Filipino Beef Mechado. - Pork Stick: great tasting pork - - for me, I would have liked a bit more "fatty" on my stick, but it was really meaty!!! - Beans were nicely done. - Smashed Plantains were served with 1000 Island dressing: probably just as good without the dressing. - Ground Beef Empanada: good, a bit of vegetables would have put it over the top (potatoes, onions, carrots, peas) - - but that's there style. - Chicken Empanada: ok, a bit salty for us. Enjoy!!!!!

At this year's New Haven Food Truck Festival, my husband insisted that we get a tripleta from this…read morespecific food truck. While there are normally two sizes to choose from, today was just the large size for $10. To be honest, at first I was very ticked that we had to wait so long for our food. Compared to other trucks at this festival, FBT was going particularly slowly, it seemed. However, the wait was worth it. The tripleta was probably my favorite thing we had the whole event. Admittedly, I've never had a tripleta before today, but I loved the flavors of the three meats (ham, pork, and steak) and the mayo+ketchup combination. I didn't want to share! We were also the only people ordering who ordered in English, too, if that's any indication for authenticity.

Not the best experience…read more The service was quick, their truck seems clean. However there's room for improvement. We ordered the Tripleta sandwich which is three meats: chicken, beef and ham with signature ketchup. That was delicious. Price 13.00 I ordered just Mofongo. Very disappointed. They didn't put any pork rinds on it as traditional Mofongo calls for. Price 8.00 for crushed plantains with garlic? Meh at least should of had some lettuce and tomato on the side. Per drinks, their offerings were very limited and if you want Piña Colada (no alcohol) you will pay 8.00. Overpriced. People go to food trucks to do something different and get a taste of their island. However, just because it is a truck, and a business you shouldn't cut corners like this. Not memorable. Take away. The guy that took my order was really nice. Would I drive to New Haven again to stop here. NO.

My food experience was amazing! I learned of this restaurant some time ago. I was finally able to…read morestop in and order some takeout. They do have a few booths and high seat dining. It smelled amazing as soon as I stepped in. I was greeted by a young lady. I ordered the arroz con gandules (yellow rice with pigeon peas) and red beans. I was so happy to see that they have plant-based options which included empanadas made with Beyond meat. I ordered the regular Beyond meat empanada and another one which had mozzarella cheese and sweet, plantains inside along with the Beyond meat. They are made to order, so it took about 15 minutes, which I had no problem with. They didn't have the potato balls available with the Beyond meat, but hopefully they will next time. The food was delicious. That was the best rice and beans I've ever had. It was perfectly seasoned without being salty, and the texture was on point. I ordered a medium and I was able to get about three servings out of it. I've never had an empanada with "meat", cheese, and plantains, but it worked so nicely. It was also seasoned to perfection, the cheese added a nice, mild creamy element, and the plantains were sweet and provided a nice contrast to the seasoned beyond meat. As I'm writing this, I'm thinking about the rice. They are closed on Sunday and Monday, but I am going on Tuesday. Lol. They do have pernil, and a variety of chicken options from what I saw.

Which honestly can feed up to two people. They had a variety of stews and meats. Parking was plentiful which I love seeing. Walking in your are greeted by the staff who point out what the have for the day. There is a set up of prepared food and you pick and choose what you want on your plate. There is also a good amount of seating if you want to sit in. I ordered the roasted pork and yellow rice. It was delicious and not too salty. I couldn't help be eat it all in one seating. With the food, drink and tip it was about $20 which is pretty good for what you get. I am looking forward to come back and try other items.
