This counter service restaurant is an amazing hidden local gem. The lunch special here is $7 for a meat and two sides. Everything there is astonishingly amazing. Even the smoky baked chicken. Three types of rice available, two types of plantains, and mofongo made fresh to order. Call ahead for mofongo to save time.

This place is BOMB. $7.50 for the lunch special which is enough food for two people. Dozens of options and 9 sides. Will be back soon

Extremely flavorful, cheap, and huge portions. I recently went w/ my lunch crew (2 of which are hispanic)...I am not. We all ordered something different and were all impressed and instantly was added into our regular rotation. I had the ribs, spanish rice, and plantains which contained 3 HUGE ribs. Quite amazing. It's kind of "cafeteria" style where you walk in and see what they have freshly available from behind a counter and choose what you want. They also have a full menu in case you don't want what they have already cooked. Check it out!

Favorite Puerto Rican diner/restaurant in the area. Rice/beans/pulled pork (with a little fried pork skin) always makes me happy.

My brother who lives there swore by this spot, and the second I walked into Mi Carreta, I knew he wasn't exaggerating. The Bandeja Paisa? Absolute perfection. We're talking perfectly grilled steak, a runny fried egg, sweet plantains, creamy red beans, fluffy white rice, fresh avocado, crispy chicharrón, and grilled chorizo--all on one glorious platter. I attacked it so fast I didn't even snap a photo, but trust me, that plate is burned into my memory forever. As if the food wasn't enough, the TV above the counter was showing the World Cup group draw live. We found out who Colombia is facing right there over lunch--talk about perfect timing! The whole place was buzzing. For the grand finale, we grabbed a few Colombian donuts (buñuelos and pandebonos) to go. Sweet, cheesy, impossible to eat just one. If you're anywhere on Florida's west coast and craving authentic Colombian food, do yourself a favor and head straight to Mi Carreta in St. Pete. You can thank me (and my brother) later!

She poked her head inside, she nodded back and the decision was made to visit COPA without a word. It was bustling on the inside with market goers passing through, but it was controlled chaos on the other side of the counter. The workers knew exactly what they were doing and even in busy time of the market they were quick to buss tables, get ordered items to customers fast and the bathroom was pristinely clean. The bumping A/C provided instant relief as we claimed the stools by the bar. My friends and I quickly agreed, this place is an absolute gem. So gorgeously decorated and the drinks, the mocktails, the pastry items, the food were beautiful and delicious. It really appeared they did everything well here. Service was impeccable and the side salad I ordered was so crisp and refreshing. Honestly 5 stars all around. The food, service, atmosphere and drinks were sensational and exceeded all expectations.

4.5 worth rounding up to 5 stars!…read more On a night I had my heart set on kebab (my NY roots had me craving halal truck), it was going to be tough for anything else to be satisfactory. We walked around a bit and I decided to try Copa, honestly out of hunger and a bit of desperation to also satisfy my picky kiddo (she saw coconut shrimp on the menu). This "Afro-Latin fusion" restaurant is underselling that they have the best Cuban food I've had in the city. It felt like home cooking of my favorites. The steak was perfectly tender and the chimichurri was a perfect compliment without being overpowering. The mango salad it came with was light and refreshing, and to my relief contained a few cherry tomato bits but no peppers (in my desperation I did not communicate my nightshade sensitivity). My daughter's coconut shrimp were great, my only complaint there is she would have eaten twice as many. The fries were nothing special, ask to substitute for tostones for sure. The maduros appetizer was yummy, pickled cabbage offset the sweetness beautifully. This is also a perfect Friday night spot- their happy hour is every weekday until 7:00pm, an $8 mule with my meal yes please! And it wasn't a skimpy pour, it was a nice balanced drink. My only slight disappointment was finding their black beans prepared with a ton of bell peppers, again I didn't advise ahead of time of my sensitivity so that's on me, but I strongly prefer the flavor without them anyway. And the rice was fine, plain white rice, which again is making me think I'm eating with family. This may have "fusion" on the door, but this was Cuban homestyle cooking at its best. What made this round up was the service, everyone we encountered was wonderfully friendly and genuinely helpful. I't wasn't the halal I had in mind tonight, but I'm leaving happy, and we'll come back on purpose!

Well now... I suppose there are evenings that just sort of tip their hat to you and say, "Remember…read morethis one." Tonight was one of those--with just a little salt in the air and a soft island rhythm tapping its foot in the background. I sat down at Pepo's and was served a plate of roasted pork resting there like it knew it belonged--tender, patient, and full of purpose--laid over a bed of warm yellow rice. There were chopped white onions scattered about, honest and bright, alongside black beans that tasted like they'd been simmering all afternoon without a single worry in the world. And then there was the yucca. Not firm or stubborn--no sir. It had been cooked long enough to give up its starch and relax a bit, turning soft and generous, almost like stewed potatoes that had wandered too close to butter and garlic and decided to stay awhile. Comforting in that slow, unhurried way... the kind that makes you lean back in your chair and exhale. But it was that pork... well, that pork had a story. A quiet one. The gentle punch of Cuban mojo--sour oranges and garlic shaking hands just right--bringing along sunshine, music, and that unmistakable feeling that you're exactly where you're supposed to be. Not flashy. Just honest. Like a good song played at the right volume. Truth be told, the meal was so good that before I left, I ordered a Cuban sandwich to go, along with a Cuban tamale--already looking forward to lunch tomorrow while flying back toward the Northeast, tracing the Florida coastline below. I imagine it'll taste just as good at altitude, maybe even better, with a little daydreaming and a smile. You know, meals like this don't just feed you. They put you at ease. And I can tell you this much--I'll be back one day. Because when food makes you feel this welcome, you don't forget it. You just carry it with you... maybe humming a tune as you go.
