I was in the mood for some puerto rican food and so I googled PR near me and this establishment came up and I go in and it wasn't busy at all and I see covered food layed out in front of me and there was a older gentleman serving the food and I'm guessing his daughter at the register, and I tell him that this is my first time here and what's good today and says for here or to go (and i'm thinking either he's either in a bad mood or he doesn't understand english well) and starts by showing 3 types of rice and shows some baked chicken and pulled pork (that's all he sows me with plenty other dishes around :( ) and so I say I'll have the rice and pea and chicken, so he puts the rice in the to go dish and goes over to the chicken and asks white or dark (I was thinking that I would get the whole half but no) and I say white, and then I ask how much more for the dark too, and he barks out $15, and I say uh, no thanks and he closes the container and says that's it??? But i'm thinking he was going to add some veggies or plantains and some bread but none of the above and than charges me $10.70 (for a little rice and a small breast/wing part :-( and so i'm thinking this isn't enough food and so I say to him that i'll take a cuban sandwich to go and he goes to the back and comes back with a premade cuban and dresses it up a bit and I noticed that there was barely any ham and cheese on it (it was like a sliver of chipped ham) but at least he added some pulled pork. This gentleman had no personality whatsoever and I even wonder if he ever smiles :-( The food was not that good, flavorless with no love put into it. Live and learn. read more

Our family came here today after my grandfather's funeral. I have eaten here for many years and always enjoy the food. Unfortunately, the owner refuses to mark the prices on the food and today I got burned financially when charged $15 for a portion of picadillo. I do realize that meat prices have risen but that should be indicated somewhere in the building. The only price listed anywhere is a 7.99 lunch special. So.....make money.... you are a business.... but please be a little more reasonable with marking prices. read more

Seems like small place from the outside but there is ample room in this restaurant once you walk into the establishment. Delicious puerto rican/cuban food, low prices and great meal combos with great serving portions and very friendly working staff. Plenty of parking room right outside the restaurant. This is a review for the takeout experience only. We had placed a pretty large order (for a family style meal), that large order yielded an even larger amount of food then anyone would expect. Our order included: 1 rotisserie chicken 1 order of roasted pork 1 order of pigeon pea rice and the STAR of my dining experience: 1 order of maduros This food was for 4 people, and there was enough for 3 of us to have leftovers for lunch...bummer for 1 of us. Big bummer, because everything tasted so great. The salty pork and and the starchy peas made for a seriously comforting bite of food. The meats were cooked perfectly and as I mentioned the maduros were possibly some of the best I have ever had. We ordered the plantains with the intention of having them for dessert...but everyone ended up snacking on them before we could even finish serving ourselves dinner. The food was nothing short of special and wonderful and happy and delicious. The meal maintained heat quite well considering it had a relatively long voyage to make from restaurant to homestead. My only disappointment was in the packaging of the order itself. I can't help but cringe at takeout orders being put in styrofoam containers. Because environment, but also because they're just not the greatest vessel for food transportation. If you love Spanish food you will love La Isla. Extremely flavorful, cheap, and huge portions. I recently went w/ my lunch crew (2 of which are hispanic)...I am not. We all ordered something different and were all impressed and instantly was added into our regular rotation. I had the ribs, spanish rice, and plantains which contained 3 HUGE ribs. Quite amazing. It's kind of "cafeteria" style where you walk in and see what they have freshly available from behind a counter and choose what you want. I eat here for lunch occasionally since I work nearby. Been here maybe 10 times over the last couple years. The food is consistent and tasty. The meats, particularly the slow cooked pork and beef offerings, are always well seasoned. The rice (both yellow and white) seem to be cooked without any sofrito, so in my opinion they're somewhat bland. Maybe I just like my food highly seasoned. So why 3 stars? It's because I can finish a to-go container of their food in a single sitting. Where I come from, it takes two days to finish off your standard over-stuffed Styro container.. that also costs a couple bucks less even. That's 3 stars in my Latin food cosmos. read more

As puertorrican, let me first suggest you to ignore the bad reviews!! It's clear they know nothing about Caribbean cuisine. Spanish food it's from Spain!! This family owned place serves Caribbean food, not Spanish, specifically traditional Cuban and Puertorrican plates. Seems they don't open on Sundays, which could be inconvenient for some people as one of the reviews said. But let's remember it's a family owned Restaurant, which it's understandable they take one day off. After all, they have same rights as Chick-Fil-A, and nobody complaints about them being closed on Sundays. The owner, who was serving the food, was very nice and gave us samples to help us decide. Few seconds after he talked to us, I noticed his strange Spanish accent. To my surprise he told me he and his family are all Palestinian but lived several yrs in Puerto Rico, where they learned our language. It was here in the U.S. that he learned to cook what he called it "my food". The most interesting thing about this little place is that the food was FANTASTIC and even better than most Caribbean restaurants (owned by Puertorricans) I've visited! It does taste like Puerto Rico! You can see the sofrito and little pieces of potatoes in the beans, the chicken stew was even better than my mom's! My fiancé ordered Mofongo, which I had to try as well, and oh boy!!!! The rotisserie chicken she ordered reminded us of those made on charcoal (carbón) at Piñones, Loiza (some of you will understand). My daughter devoured her Cuban sandwich too! My husband has been raving about this restaurant since he tried it 3 weeks ago. I am on the road alot for work so I promised the next trip to Pinellas Park I would give it a try. Isla is located in a small strip mall with essentially only 1 or 2 other open businesses. Don't let that deter you this place is fantastic! We were greeted warmly but the owner/chef. You can tell he takes such pride in his restaurant and his love of his food shines through. They offer weekly specials all for only $6.99 which consists of 1 meat and 2 sides. Plenty to fill your belly and more. They have a hot bar filled with delicious choices. I decided upon the beef stew with yellow rice and sweet plantains. I inquired about their hot sauce and was given a sample of their hottest. I was warned to proceed with caution. My husband tried the daily special of spare ribs and rice with beans. The first bite I took was bursting with deep rich flavor, I couldn't believe how tasty and tender the meat was. I dug right into the hot sauce WOW was it hot. It was a nice addition to my rice. I even finished more of my plate than my husband. I wasn't even terribly hungry, it was just that good. This will be one of my regular stops in Pinellas Park, I'm already anticipating my return. read more

Also the guy serving is a little sketch/rude about prices and kept saying "It costs how much I charge you" when we asked for prices, never directing us to the menu. Loved this place! Just went for my first time today from a recommendation of a friend. First of all the food is already prepared (for lunch anyway), fresh and ready when you get there. This is important to me because I'm usually in a rush but I don't want to eat fast food. It's not a place you would go to for ambiance. It's simple, diner sort of seating. Once they serve your food from the line, you pick your own seat, grabbing some silverware on the way. But it's clean and well kept. There's a TV if you're wanting a distraction from eating alone. I ordered the pork and sweet plantains with yellow rice. Miami is my home town so I'm pretty clear on what this meal should taste like. It was excellent. These folks know how to make properly ripened sweet plantains too. They were not hard on the inside at all. Sweet and creamy all the way through. Definitely coming back. read more

I have a service dog for medical reasons most food allergy related and have to have my dog with me when I eat someplace new. The sign on the door says no pets which is understandable. We were told no animals due to covid but we told the worker by ada law you have to allow service dogs. He said no and refused service. We left and will not be returning to the establishment.
