We tried to place our order 3 different times with our server leaving us mid-order all three times without saying anything to deliver food to tables. It was strange, so my wife went to ask about it very nicely and the other male server yelled at her and was extremely rude saying "we will take your order when we can take your order!" So, our group got up and left. Ridiculous and rude. They will never get our business again and I honestly hope this affects them. read more

We have been here twice, once as a large group and the second, 3 friends. the first time was great, they attended us well, food came out fast and very tasty. The second time wasn't as great.... we came around lunchtime so there weren't as many people, but the service was awful! we had to wait almost 20 minutes for the waitress to come and get our order, then she went back in and came back after another 7 minutes. the food came out in a timely manner but we could feel something has changed. I ordered the steak and my friend ordered the ravioli, hers was wonderful! mine was 7/10. We might go again but I reallt cant promise anything. read more

Just had the BEST steak of my life here, and I grill a mean steak myself! Ordered the "entrana" on the menu, which is skirt steak in Texas. They ask how I wanted it cooked and I told them "the best way" and my GAWD IT WAS PERFECT!!!! Perfectly seasoned as well. Came with a small loaf of bread, french fries, and a salad. I avoided the fries & bread to cram all the meat I could. It really should be shared between 2 ppl...its 2 huge thick slabs of beef. The pick shows it looking uniformly pink but it wasnt bloody or have a raw texture at all: it was perfect. Bonus: bill came to $14USD with a small carafe of wine. BARGAIN!! read more

I rarely write Yelp reviews internationally since I figured that most travelers would rather check TripAdvisor. Nevertheless, I had great experiences at La Hormiga on two separate trips to Buenos Aires. The quality of food is outstanding for the price you pay. We got the Macho Argentina for 2 people, which includes a huge T-bone steak (ask for Jugoso aka Medium Rare), grilled onions and bell peppers, provoleta, sweet potato mash, fries, and a fried egg sunny side up. Topped that off with a bottle of wine and the total came out to ~$1200 ARS (or ~$21 USD at the the time of this writing). The only downside is their service. Some waiters are fantastic and others not so much. Don't let it rain on your parade. Enjoy the great food at great prices, without the long lines at Don Julio. read more

Nice atmosphere - lots of wood, bench seating along the long wall opposite the wall and a small internal balcony above the bar. They got the lighting and sound right also. All the meals are served on a wooden board - interesting concept I think. Good service - not rushed, just right. The server was funny in steering me around the menu. A couple of items I asked about and the answer was a bit like "You don't really want that..." and then when I selected something better, the answer came back "that's an excellent choice!" Good food - I had the Chorizo which is grilled and then served on a very hot metal plate with a lemon - outstanding. And, the pizza which is more or less grilled flatbread with the requisite ingredients on top, It was good also. Value - outstanding! I saw many plates go by and the portions are big. Total cost for my meal including a beer and bottled water - 150 pesos (about $15US depending on the day of the week and where you do the exchange - I could write a book on this). One of the coolest parts of the restaurant is that it looked to me like all of the cooking was done behind the bar - a grill, pasta cauldron and pizza oven are all back there while three chefs work away within sight of everyone. We were killing time before dinner and wandering around the neighborhood when we stumbled upon La Hormiga. Remembering that our hotel's restaurant sheet noted it as a good visit, we decided to stop in and grab a drink and a bite before dinner. I loved the feel of the place. It felt outdoorsy inside, if that makes any sense. The menu had zero English and our server spoke zero English, but managed to get our questions across and place our orders for 2 empanadas and one caprese salad. My friend wanted to try a local beer, and I couldn't pass up the dirt cheap price on a half bottle of wine "el penguino" which literally was served in a penguin pitcher. Half bottle of wine was definitely more than I needed to drink, but that's another story lol. The food came out quite quickly, and we both enjoyed our empanadas and shared salad. Overall it was an enjoyable afternoon experience and I would definitely return! read more

We came here late night during the week. It was one of the only restaurants that was actually open. It was packed and had a long wait. Luckily, we only waited about 3 mins since we were a party of 2. Our waitress was super sweet & the service was great. The interior design is pretty cool although it's very dark in here. My friend had steak (which I also tried) and I had a chicken quesadilla. Both meals were fantastic and the portions were very generous. It's also very inexpensive. Now I understand why it's such a popular spot. Downside: it's cash only. Also, you will feel very tight in your seat. We were seated so close to the couple next to us that we were practically eating with them. Not too terrible but going in a larger group may be a better idea. read more

I loved this place and will be back. I read the reviews and noticed that everyone is complaining about the wait, well duh if a restaurant is popular you will have to wait to be seated. I went for a late lunch with a girlfriend. Told her "kitchen takes a long time," nope. We ordered food, and everything was super fast! Our steak, mushroom and chorizo appetizers. Tastes good. Loved the steak (note to myself, get it medium rare. Medium was comparable to US medium temperature). Steak comes with pumpkin, rice, french fries, grilled cheese. For lunch, we got a beer and the mint lemonade. With tip and everything we paid 500 ARS (as of November 2016 its $33 USD). For what we had, the flavors and the portion size we felt that we got a good deal. If you want to give this restaurant a try, choose the time between 1pm and 7 pm. Enjoy! read more

This feels like a tourist trap. I went in a party of six and there were plenty of empty tables yet we were placed right in front of the kitchen were all the waiters stand. This would be fine in other circumstances but they were literally just staring at us and nobody came to take our order. We were later changed to a better table after we asked. We had to flag a waiter after 10 minutes of having them all stand in a group while ignoring us. Food was 4 stars, service not so good, skip this place if you can. read more

On a weekend trip to Buenos Aires, we went to La Hormiga with local friends on their recommendations. To sum it up: long long wait, great atmosphere and service and very good food. Group of 6 (with a toddler), arriving at 9.30pm on a Saturday night= expected disaster (they do not take reservations). They warned us that it would be about 2 hours wait (table for 2 people were being made available after a short 15min wait). Knowing this would be the price to pay in other similar restaurant in the area, we decided to go for a drink nearby and come back. The hostess was very accomodating when we told us our plan (none of that "well if I call your name and you are not there, you are out"). Came back around 11.30pm, when there were even more people waiting and got seated around midnight. Worth noting the wait during the week or for lunch is much shorter or non-existant. Usually I would be dying and quite in a bad mood of waiting so long, but the atmosphere and the service made me not mind so much. The room has a tall ceiling, large wooden tables, everything cooked on the grill in front of you. It was loud but not deafening. The waitress was nice and answered all of our questions (we spoke Spanish, I cannot vouch for her English), and got us a toddler seat without us having to ask. Now the food... We went for a large plancha with steak, fried eggs, cheese, rice, pumpkin puree, fries and grilled onions (a steal at 130pesos, which is about US$11). The portion is huge, we saw some table were sharing it which totally makes sense! But it was not only big, it was also very good and tasty. The beef was of high quality and super tender. The flavour was even better mixed with the grilled pepper and cheese. For dessert they had a chocolate volcan, but it takes 30min to cook so we decided to go for a simpler Dulce de alcayota, on our waitress recommendation, which is basically a marmelade of alcayota (a type of squash) on top of slices of cheese. Does not sound that fancy but it was very good, fresh and not too sweet or heavy. read more

I ordered a steak medium and it was overcooked (no red) and the lady looked me dead in my face and told me it was red and that the steak was cooked fine, and the chef refused to cook me another steak. La Hormiga is one of those places where the design far exceeded quality of the food. The dining room (soaring arched wood canopy and rough woven textiles mixed with tile hard surfaces) and its open kitchen present an inviting contemporary space. The reality is that the noise level is so high that only those nearest can hear you speak. While the open kitchen has a parilla-style grill, the menu has many items unrelated to grilling such as pastas. My dining partner ordered spinach gnocchi in a cheese sauce. I ordered the grilled Patagonian trout. We shared an order of herbed provoleta (an Argentine specialty of cheese heated in a cast iron skillet with herbs on top) as an appetizer. The gnocchi was tender but flavorless. The cheese sauce was like something out an off-brand box of mac-and-cheese. I am surprised that a chef would let it out of the kitchen if it had been tasted before being served. The grilled trout was served on a bed of field salad greens with fresh tomato and avocado. Lemon wedges were provided for the fish along with oil and vinegar for the salad portion. Visually, the presentation was striking; however, nothing on the plate was seasoned. The whole dish was, served on a flat round board which made the application of oil and vinegar problematic unless you wanted drips on your lap or shirt. The fish was done to perfection; it just had no flavor. Pepper and lemon did nothing to bring out the flavor of the fish. Our server was friendly and as attentive as she could be with the number of patrons in her area. The woman running the front of the house was friendly and efficient managing a queue of diners with a 30-minute wait time (no reservations). The total bill for the meal was 249 Argentine pesos exclusive of tip, a very reasonable price if the meal had lived up to its potential. The problems with our meal were all in the kitchen. Based on our dining experience, if the chef for La Hormiga was competing on Top Chef, it would be "pack your knives and go" time. read more

This place is huge and beautiful, especially upstairs. BUT IT'S REALLY REALLY NOISY! Once you're in, you'll get certainly a really strong headache. As most of the restaurant where I went, Hormiga is also very dark, obscure. Waiters only speak Spanish [We tried with English, French, Italian or German..]. I haven't written a review for an international resturant. The food deserves 5 stars but their staff deserves 1 star. I travel a lot. But I went to this resturant in August 2019 and again this past weekend. My experience was the same both times. Although the food was delicious the staff was the opposite. It is obvious we are not from there and the staff was not very Hospitable. Both times people came in after us and our waiter/waitress took their orders and they recieved their food before our order was even taken. In August when we asked to be helped our waiter actually waved us off at first. This last time my sister wanted some chimichurri and no one would help us. After my sister kept waving her hand two of the wait staff looked at each other and started laughing because neither wanted to help us. One of them finally came over to see what we needed. When we finished our meal we had to wait awhile before our waitress would bring us our check. I normally tip very good but they did not deserve a tip. Even thought this resturant was recommended and the food was excellent I will never go to that place again nor will I recommend it. read more

The only problem with the place is that you would notmally have to wait to get a place, and that of course because price/quality of food is great ! It is not a place to be if you want to enjoy a relaxed dinner in company but it is definitely is a place to eat good, pay fair prices and enjoy the busy atmosphere :) read more

Run in the opposite direction unless you are looking for cheap, tasteless Mexican style food. Nothing personal against Mexican food since I enjoy their food in the USA and eat it frequently. However, the poor service combined with the equivalent "supermarket" tasting food is not worth the visit. There are plenty other places in the area that far exceed this restaurant in terms of quality, service and overall ambience. We ordered Pollo Asado with Guacamole that was supposed to be spicy and it was a complete disaster. It was served cold, nothing spicy in the dish, oh and no Guacamole. read more

Most God awful "pizza" I ever had in my life! First off, the restaurant it self is very nice but the food was just inedible. Ordered their version of a Margherita and was served a super thin white cracker like substance with a mountain of off tasting mozzarella, a ton of oregano sprinkled on top with black olives. (gross!). No sauce what so ever! I asked for a side of tomato sauce to give this mess some flavor but the waitress had no clue what I was asking. Service was inept and unless you speak Spanish, good luck. Prices were a bit if a ripoff too. Horrible experience here. read more

This place is a local hot spot. Not full of tourists at all! The servers don't know much English, but if you know some Spanish you can definitely get by! The hostess was a bit nasty and ignored me about 3 times before I got her attention to put me on the list to wait for a table. dim lighting with candles set a cool nighttime ambiance. No complaints about the food at all! I think they made the best chimichurri sauce I've ever had! The steak was delicious served on a wood board with salad and awesomely seasoned French fries! Went there for lunch today with 2 friends. Everyone loved their food. I had a salmon flatbread pizza. Great flavor and enough food for two. My friends had a juicy steak and thin breaded steak. They enjoyed both. Very generous sized meals. Only reason I did not post 4 stars is because the fans did not really do the job in the 90 degree weather.. I don't understand why they would lie to people. I ordered a bife de chorizo that was supposed to be 450 g. Well, I'm Argentinean and I've been eating meat ever since I remember. That piece was at best 270 - 300 g. The service was also mediocre, to the point that we had to finish the meal with thirst as we couldn't catch the waitress attention to order something else to drink. read more

We chose to eat at La Hormiga due to its great location and optional indoor or outdoor seating. We sat ourselves outside. The waitress came out and dismally greeted us. We had a few questions about specific items on the menu which were vaguely answered in my opinion. Needless to say by this time we knew we were going to either like the place based on their food or nothing else. The menu was ok. We ordered a dish that named two main components as part of the dish. Our food came out and was missing one of the two components mentioned in the description. After asking about it, the waitress took our plates back and added it. This is not s big deal if the food was spectacular. I won't go on and on about what's lacking in this place. If you're looking for something more special in terms of food and service I'm sure you'll find better dining experiences in Palermo Soho while visiting Buenos Aires. read more

Sent back reheated in oven so it was all dry and not eatable !!! They insisted I pay for food I didn't eat.
