    pici pasta
    Lynn C.

We found this place via the Lonely Planet and wandered around Pisa until we found it. It was definitely worth the trek and made us see Pisa a lot more than what we had expected (I had no idea it was such a big student town). La Grotta is a fancy little Tuscan restaurant designed like a grotto on the inside - very romantic! Most of the people dining there were all Italian and older (50s+) when we walked in. A couple of young couples joined later. Their wine prices to start are quite reasonable (around 20 EUR for house bottle) and one of the better wines i've had - it's a shame i never got a chance to take a picture of the bottle. We had food a little earlier to stave off hunger so we werent very hungry. We ordered just one primo piatto (first course), and got the pici pasta with I think bacon and chestnut sauce that was, according to my bf, "very interesting." The pici pasta is a Tuscan specialty - super thick long elasticky del dente noodle. Honestly, I can't quite describe the taste of the sauce that covered it (definitely a white sauce) - I thought it was delicious. As we were sharing it, our server told us she was provide it to us in separate plates because the noodle would be too long to share (I was thinking Lady and the Tramp style). For the secondi, we shared a cod with peppers. the cod was grilled and amazing. We also got a side dish - i think maybe it was creamed spinach, but it wasn't very memorable. The service was really good as well and even though most of the servers there did not speak any English, they were really helpful. - 2 half litre of wine - 1 first course - 1 second course - 1 side dish - 1 coffee - 2 cover charge (2 eur a person) Total was 49 EUR - definitely not expensive for what we had. Loved this little place and I definitely recommend anyone who wants to try authentic Tuscan food.

Between the three of us we shared two pizzas - the margherita, and the proscuitto e funghi. Both were delicious, but I tend to like more toppings on my pizzas so I enjoyed the proscuitto e funghi one more. The crust was really light and chewy, but also thin enough to hold all the sauce and toppings. They were also quite giant! We also tried the limoncello spritz, but that wasn't our favorite. Overall, a great spot!

We ended up trying the two pizza listed as "popular/suggested". These are my thoughts. Rivistato - What a unique pizza. There is a lot going on and it's folded in half. I thought it was good but they put in this veggie that was bitter which was a tad offsetting for my taste. It's unique, I prob wouldn't get it again but it was different! (3.5/5) Margherita Al Contrario - Went for a simple classic and this was delicious. It's different than the pizza in America and overall enjoyed it. (4.5/5) Overall an enjoyable spot for pizza. Note... the pizza are pretty big and we got two pizza for two people. Tons of leftover for us. We ended up spending 35 euro for two pizza. They gave us a small discount for paying in cash!
