I'm a 43-year-old male who suffered from chronic, sharp pain (6-7/10) between my spine and right shoulder for over two and a half years. I tried several treatments, but nothing helped. Just following up to my review because some of the things he commented were simply not true. He claimed I was charged $393 for blood work and that the follow-up call was not charged, which was not the case. I was clearly told I was paying the same amount for a follow-up call as the first visit. As you can see in the screenshot below, I was charged $898 dollars after our visit. This reflected the appointment, the follow-up, and the blood work they scheduled. So the claim that I was never charged for the follow-up call is false. Another thing he mentioned was that all his credentials were "on the wall" when we came in, as if we are supposed to know what all of that means. We are not medical professionals. We didn't know what a chiropractic neurologist even was, nor did we know that this meant he could not prescribe or adjust medication. The medication was one of our main concerns, and we mentioned that multiple times. His response in the first appointment was "keep taking it for now", which implied he would be able to help us after reviewing bloodwork and having more information. At no point did he ever tell us we needed another appointment with an actual neurologist with an MD to get the medication issue handled. That was never communicated in our first visit or until halfway through the second one when we brought it up again to which he said he cannot help, after weeks of us waiting for guidance. Had we known from the start that he couldn't help with medication and couldn't prescribe anything, we never would have scheduled an appointment, especially not two of them. We only came because his office assured us they could help with seizures and the aftermath, which clearly included the medication. We now have an appointment with a real neurologist who actually has an MD, scheduled for the 11th, and we have been stuck on the same medication dosage this entire time because of the misunderstanding created here. I only wanted to correct the inaccuracies in his response because the situation was already upsetting enough, and the added misinformation in his comment doesn't reflect what actually happened. I also want to add something I didn't even mention in the first review. His bedside manner the first visit had moments that were honestly inappropriate. When my girlfriend mentioned she was from Belize and felt the food here wasn't as healthy, he responded, "That's interesting... Belize is dirty." A literal quote. This offended her, and rightfully so, anyone would be taken aback by a doctor casually calling their home country "dirty." We were pleased to do a zoom call, instead of an in person visit, which we agreed to happily. However, we didn't expect to be way worse than the first one doing it this way. He rushed us out of the call, claiming he was 'running out of time' and his whole demeanor changed. It was as if he was having a bad day and didn't want to deal with us. After speaking to multiple medical professionals since then, they all said the way he handled things was unprofessional. Even the clinic she went to afterward to redo her blood work was shocked when she explained her experience. They were genuinely concerned about the medication she was on, much more than he ever seemed to be. As mentioned in my original review, we were also told he would send the endocrinologist's information. He claims he sent it but that it "went to spam," but we never received anything -- and nothing from his office has ever gone to spam before or after. He also said he would send a list of things for her to eat and steps to improve the issues found in her labs. This was never sent either. Still hasn't been sent. So idk what he was referring to. And honestly, I have a strong feeling he only became interested in "fixing" the situation once he saw the negative review. After the second appointment, I called his office during normal business hours to follow up about the endocrinologist's info and the other things he said he'd send, but I got no response. They rarely answered my calls when I reached out. That's what pushed me to finally post a review. I'm 78 years old, I have a deteriorating meniscus by approximately 30% i walk several miles a day and suddenly I have pain in my right knee after walking 4 blocks. I answered an ad for soft wave therapy. My first session was with dr James who explained the process and administered the ten minute treatment. Immediately I noticed an improvement and signed up for the suggested 8 sessions. I progressed along the way and after completing my sessions I am very much improved. I called to inquire about treatment for my post concussion syndrome. The first thing the receptionist told me, before I could share my issue, was the cost of an evaluation. Okay fine, that's important info but a bit weird to discuss within 10 seconds of calling. I followed up to ask how much treatment could cost and she told me she wasn't able to tell me. I asked for a ballpark, she said she couldn't tell me. I asked for a range, she said she couldn't tell me. How can I agree to an expensive evaluation if I don't know if treatment would cost hundreds, thousands, or tens of thousands of dollars? You cannot argue with success! TEN TEN TEN. While two other experienced chiropractors and a deep tissue body worker couldn't get the knife out of my neck for YEARS, Dr JJ, did in one visit!! I've gone to chiropractors since I was seven years old. Dr JJ is brilliant. He feels for the subluxation and is able to make the necessary adjustments to put those bones back in place. For those men who don't go because they are muscle bound and most chiropractors cannot adjust them, Dr JJ is your man. He's ripped and knows how to move his muscles to convince your bones to behave and go back to where they belong. He does this one move where he puts my neck in a sling and that adjusts every vertebrae in my spine. Then for my concussion, he uses this black white or red white squares and eye movement that resets your brain. He's got an impressive exercise type room with restorative equipment that patients are allowed to use. While I'm not a fan of Edward, the office manager, for his zero tolerance policy and reasons mentioned in other reviews, I have to give him a head nod. He DID allow me to come back to the practice after several years because I missed ONE appointment, which is easy to do unfortunately, with a concussion. I hope future visits will improve my feelings about Edward. I suffered a lot of years "doing time" for my one horrible inconsiderate mistake. Plus Edward DID give me a call 30 minutes prior to my appointment to ask a question but that acted as a reminder to me (in case I had forgotten again- but didn't.). My husband and I met with him for a 2 hour appointment to discuss my findings....and let's say it started off well, but then turned disappointing because we did not want to write him a almost $13K check or credit card without talking between ourselves... buyer beware... I Made an apointment to get soft wave therapy for my severe osteoartritis. All was good and I was sent forms to complete via text. I couldnt make the appt because I was knocked down by a dog I was pet sitting for and landed on both knees on a hard wood floor and I was in excutiating pain afterward and my knee was so swollen I could no bend my leg. I should have called, but I was in so much pain, it was all I could think about. Life happens sometimes and things dont go as planned, but apparently at this practice, you only get one strike and then they want full payment up fromt as a new patient that hasn't even been to their office yet. They already had a deposit and now they wanted more from me prior to my initial consultation. When I called, I spoke to Edward, the Office Manager. He was unproffestional, cut me off when I was talking and he was extremely rude...then HUNG UP ON ME!! I waited a few minutes and then called back to confront the rude hangup. This time I spoke with Ciara. She was lovely, helpful and compliant. She got me on the schedule for a later date and I felt taken care of and all was good again. It was good again until Ciara called me back to inform me she needed to take full payment inadvance before I even come in for my first visit. If that was company policy, why wasnt that mentioned in the first call with her when the appt was sussessfully rescheduled?? It felt like a policy that Edward just made up and made her call me to tell me. Whether or not it's their policy, I called and was spoken rudely too, then an appt was made and I felt reassured again, then another call to demand full payment. These folks at LA Functional Neurology need to get their shit together. I've been in custom service for 20 years and this isn't how you handle a new patient who wants to place their trust in you with their health needs and pain management in a holistic manner. But the calm vibe of the office, the music, the welcoming smiles, and the consistent treatment brought me more and more relief after each visit. He makes sexually tinged remarks to myself and my husband (he said my husband had a "magnificent" behind), he talked about the size of another (female) patients' behind, and made an entirely off color remark to me that I won't repeat lest it reveal my identity, this guy is scary. He was also extremely condescending towards me and my husband, asking if I got my information from Dr. Google. My husband told him at the onset of the appointment that I would be the one asking most of the questions and he said "why, is there something wrong with your brain?" At another point I asked if I could ask him a question and he said "No". Total asshattery. There used to be another review here from a woman who had a similar experience of him using sexualized language about her being on all fours (I'm not kidding!!) but now it's gone plus a few others about his high pressure sales tactics regarding the packaged treatment plan but all I see now are great reviews. Save your money. My lower back was on fire when I went in to see Dr. James. For what it costs to be seen by him, I was hoping for some relief. He will perform an exam on you for which you will have to pay $285. Afterwards, off you pop to the radiologist for an MRI that will cost $450. During the second appointment he will sit down with you to "read" you your MRI results. No pain relief, no stretches that he recommends you do, nothing. It's a sales session for the spinal decompression and lazer therapy he offers which costs $5000. So I'm out $285 and no pain relief just for the privilege of this guy reading my MRI? I can do that myself, the radiologist provides you with a very detailed report. I came in because of all the 5 star reviews on here, and drove an hour to see him. l left incredibly disappointed. Also, there is no "free consultation" as advertised. The consultation is 15 min spent asking you what hurts. I went to see another doctor for a second opinion. He immediately put me on a traction machine which essentially does the same thing Dr. James's fancy decompression table does. My new doctor provided me with home exercises I can do to help strengthen my back which have already begun to alleviate my pain.
