I have been a member for over 10 years. For much of that time, I would have rated this health club a 5. The members are great and the breadth of amenities is great. For example, there are basketball courts, a pool, a dedicated cardio floor, classes, free weights etc. Unfortunately however, after over a year of corporate management failing to provide even the most basic maintenance, I now am forced to rate this facility as a 1. As other Yelp reviews have noted, the pool has been out of service since October 2024. There are 3 stairclimber machines...none of which have worked in over 10 months. One of the two water fountains on the first floor leaked about 6 months ago....it was shut off and never repaired. The HVAC system does not work properly during the summer months....the cardio deck is on the second floor and on hot days, it is so uncomfortably warm that many members choose to forgo the cardio part of their workout. It pains me to say that a once-great club has been starved so completely of resources that even the most basic, expected maintenance is not being performed.

A couple of months into my workout - one day, during my workout, the general manager approached me…read moreand offered to cancel my gym membership because I dropped my weights during my deadlifting. Before I signed up, I specifically asked three questions: 1) Whether I can do deadlifts; 2) Whether I can drop weights; and 3) Whether I can use chalk. The staff (a young boy) at the front desk answered affirmatively to all three questions, so I joined the gym. Many Planet Fitness type of commercial gyms have noise rules - that was why I asked. Given the explicit initial verbal consent when I signed up, I was furious and felt not welcomed. I argued with the manager and then left immediately without finishing my workout. I came back a second time to get my refund (and btw they refused to refund my annual fee). Now the young boy who signed me up claimed I only asked whether I could do deadlifts. And he claimed that he had warned me multiple times. These were flat out lies. About two week ago (and a couple of months into my training), he asked me to put mats underneath and I complied. That was the only time that we had a discussion about the noise. I pressed for details about those supposed "warnings" and the boy refused to clarify. I've trained at the gym for four months at different hours. Most of the time I saw only teens at the front desk. The general manager claimed he never saw me before that day's incident - thus I realized that the gym never had proper professional management. If the gym decides to hire underaged staff to help, that's perfectly okay. The problem is - if the teens - who lack the professionalism of adult trained staff - decide to handle matters in a teen's way - customers will have limited resort. The manager pointed out that the gym has rules forbidding weight dropping (and I am not disputing their general rules), but the gym also has rules that people must wear their masks at all times, as well as you must put weights back on the rack. But the rules are never enforced. People wander around, or grunt heavily, a lot of them without masks especially the teens. I have been training for a couple of months and I was under the impression that it was a gym managed in - let's say - a quite libertine way. I told him that this club is among the most dysfunctional in terms of weights arrangements (and I have toured more than a dozen gyms in different areas) - every single time I went there there were always some weights on the bars/machines (sometimes only on one side) and I had to put those weights back by myself. Different categories of weights are often stacked together. Also, having three 45lbs plates only on one end of the barbell hanging on a rack without people attending is actually dangerous. When I pointed out these apparent irregularities, the general manager - rather than acknowledging that things could improve - exploded at me. He shouted that it was not feasible to have staff sleeping on the floor all day to observe gym etiquette and enforcing the rules - and he would not stand me "insulting" his gym. So this is an interesting development. But after reading other comments on Yelp now I perfectly understand that I am not the only customer who got shouted at by the general manager. To sum up - the gym is not professionally managed compared to industry peers. The training environment is passable but not among the top tier. There are a lot of teens who train here and teens have different manners. For the mask conscious people - I've been to gyms that stringently enforce mask rules but this is not one of them. People frequently don't disinfect the equipment despite the explicit rules mandating disinfection. The locker rooms are not dirty but they are a bit beaten down (I have only seen the male lockers). Its pricing point ($45) should warrant a better environment but it is not the case. And the last word I heard from them is - you are no longer a customer, bye-bye. Well indeed. That's just the perfect way to treat your customers, even former ones. Congratulations.

They charge a monthly maintenance fee which is completely fine, however equipment is consistently breaking down and takes forever to be fixed. I was very specific about the techniques and cut I wanted and was assured they could handle it. When I arrived, I was told my appointment had been switched to a "more experienced" stylist. Her previous client was unhappy with her color, so instead of focusing on my appointment, the stylist kept going back and forth, working on that client's color while also cutting my hair. She completely ignored me, barely consulted with me, and kept insisting the haircut I wanted "wasn't that hard," as if I was making a big deal over nothing. The result was a terrible haircut that was not what I asked for at all. At first I thought I might be overreacting and tried to give it time, but months later my hair is still completely messed up and uneven from that cut. This was an incredibly disappointing experience, especially before such an important event. Terrible customer service and I would not return or recommend this salon

Poor Experience - Unacceptable Customer Service…read more The massage itself was good, but everything that followed completely overshadowed the experience. After my service, I paid with a $150 gift card at the front desk. The employee, Jane, ran the gift card multiple times and even said "third time's a charm," then told me I was all set to go. Based on that, I left. Shortly after, I received a call saying there was supposedly only $10 on the gift card. I explained that the card was for $150 and that I had been told I was all set after it was rung in multiple times. I answered the call and also called back to try to resolve the issue responsibly. The general manager, Samantha Goy, called me. Unfortunately, the conversation was extremely unprofessional. She was rude, aggressive, and would not allow me to speak. When I reminded her that I was the customer and was trying to explain what happened, she responded, "That's not how this works." Despite explaining that:    *   I was told I was all set and cleared to leave    *   I did not knowingly leave without paying    *   I had already contacted corporate by phone and email with no response Samantha Goy accused me of nonpayment, claimed I left without paying, and threatened to file a theft charge with the police if I did not immediately pay--while they still have possession of my $150 gift card. I repeatedly stated that I would never intentionally leave without paying and that I was actively trying to resolve the situation through corporate channels before settling any remaining balance. None of this was acknowledged. When I asked to speak with her manager, Sean, I was told he would not speak to me. This interaction was demeaning, hostile, and completely unnecessary. A simple billing issue caused by staff error should never escalate into accusations and threats. I am beyond upset by how this was handled and expected far better professionalism from a business of this caliber. So disappointing.

I strongly recommend finding a different gym to learn the Olympic lifts. While these guys do…read moreattract some attention from networking, running seminars and knowing technique, they are more concerned with making money and traveling than coaching their athletes. They also conduct business in a shady manner - offering no dispute resolution whatsoever - cash in, cash out. For example: Last month, Norwood Weightlifting accepted pre-payments from several members (myself included) for a full eight-week training cycle and then promptly vanished a month later to travel around the country and post videos on YouTube. I was never given a refund. Bottom line: the fact that the coaches don't care enough to even show up to meets when a handful of their athletes are competing speaks volumes about this place.

I find the other comment bashing this gym as a poor place to learn the olympic lifts maybe…read moremisguided. I trained here on a dedicated schedule for several months and dropped in many times over the years. This is a weightlifting training center, mainly to learn the olympic lifts (snatch and clean and jerk). This is not really a "gym" to go workout haphazardly, or do bodybuilding or some other style of exercise. Olympic weightlifting is a pressing focused sport that highly utilizes speed strength, acceleration and power. The main movements trained are the snatch and the clean and jerk. There is also a great deal of barbell training including squats, deadlifts and pressing movements along with general physical preparedness training. If you are serious about learning the discipline of Olympic Weightlifting, Norwood maybe a place for you to learn. They host a variety of Eleiko bars and bumpers. The rich history of Olympic lifting harbored within the walls of Norwood Training Center is tough to beat throughout the nearby gyms. There are several good gyms that offer great coaching in the Olympic lifts in New England and this is undoubtedly one of them. Most people who come here for training probably do not venture to the gym based on yelp reviews. It is more likely that they have seen the team lifting at local weightlifting meets, or heard of the gym through many of the successful national and international weightlifters who have trained at this facility (simply youtube video search the hookgrip media group to find a video featuring a few National Level athletes including Norwood's very own coach and New England Snatch record holder, Yasha Kahn, also training in the video are Olympic and World Champions Ilya Ilyin and Vasily Polovnikov who coached here for a time). The gym's owner Don Venterosa may be one of the original members of USAW, I think his member number might be in the low hundreds (they now have millions of registered members) and is deeply entrenched in weightlifting knowledge and experience. He really wants the athletes who train here to succeed. You may also find the legendary Denis Reno coaching or training at the facility, best known for his famous decades long and highly respected weightlifting newsletter. Dave Lussier, one of the strongest youth weightlifters with a multitude of records also brings his team of lifters here from time to time. I almost gave them a four star review because the parking situation can sometimes be a bit jumbled. Also, it gets busy some nights and you may need to share a platform with 3-4 other lifters and it can get a bit tricky. It is what might be considered an "old-school" weightlifting gym, as it is located in a garage bay next to an auto body shop. As inferred by one of the other reviews, you may not always have a coach present some days but always have access to one for any questions or concerns and remote coaching. The majority of athletes who I have trained with here are looking to be competitive on the local, regional or national level and take weightlifting very seriously. It maybe an intimidating place to learn, but if you can get past the difficulty surrounding the initial learning curve inherently experienced in weightlifting and have the discipline required to work at the techniques and principles consistently, Norwood is a great gym. This review is only to clarify the previous one star review and offer a contrasting perspective. You will certainly need a good deal of independence, confidence and socializing /people skills and a healthy dose of common sense since the weights being lifted here are usually in the higher calibers. If you feel like you need a more beginner/intro class to weightlifting I would suggest inquiring with Norwood Training center about setting up private sessions with a coach (they do offer that based on availability) until you feel ready enough to join the group training sessions or to continue with their remote coaching program. Don't be surprised if the first several weeks to months involve training with just the barbell or light weights, they take technique incredibly serious, and look to have you understanding the movements and performing them safely for quite some time before adding wrights and developing strength. It takes years to get good at Olympic weightlifting, no surprise many of the athletes here have been training for years at this facility and have found success in their efforts. Hope that helps.

The locker rooms and bathrooms are especially bad--dirty, neglected, and clearly not a priority for management. The equipment itself might be decent, but that doesn't make up for the environment. A gym should feel clean, safe, and well cared for, and this one misses the mark completely. Staff presence is minimal and doesn't seem engaged, which only adds to the impression that no one is really managing the place. At the end of the day, it feels like a classic case of "you get what you pay for." If cleanliness and basic upkeep matter to you, this location is going to be a disappointment.

I lost 20 pounds using it consistently. After last year's "emergency renovations," the circuit room disappeared. I gave it time, as staff said it should return. It's now clear it won't--and worse, the training staff has been eliminated entirely. Members are told to watch videos and figure it out themselves. That's not a fitness experience--that's cost-cutting. I tried to share this feedback directly instead of just posting online. When I asked who owns the facility, the front desk couldn't even say, only that it's now controlled by an investment firm. That explains a lot. What made this location special has been stripped away: no circuit program, no trainers, no guidance. Just a bare-bones gym asking members to do it all themselves. I've been patient, but this feels like a clear shift away from member service and toward squeezing out profit. I'll be taking my membership elsewhere.
