This is for sure one of the BEST restaurants in San Sebastián! Tucked away in old town and partially carved out a space for itself in the old city ruins, La Cueva hides. If you are lucky to get a seat on the terrace, you will have a great view of all the action around you from the crowd.
The food is traditional faire and every thing we all ordered was delicious. We were a large party of critical foodies and would all recommend the following:
-Start with the creaminess olive, gherkin, and pepper bowl, then to the grilled calamari and squid, the white asparagus is perfectly cooked and accompanied by a slight vinegar dressing, their specialty sautéed garlic mushrooms are mouth watering and amazing, Niçoise salad was very fresh (so good we ordered 2 more).
- Then to the mains...known for their seafood and steak and all fantastic! We ordered 5 steaks medium well and they were so juicy and well seasoned! The tuna covered in red pepper and tomato sauce was fantastic. Mussels in light tomato sauce were also excellent!
- Leave room for dessert! Cheesecake with light berry sauce and homemade cream was so good, we ordered more!
Service by Mario was exceptional too and he could t have been nicer with all our broken Spanish. He suggested fantastic wines from the region too. After a week in San Sebastián and eating all over the city, our entire group agreed this was the best meal yet. Not sure why there aren't floods of reviews, but my guess is there will be soon, and this place will be one of the top to reserve! read more
