Americans beware. This is simply not authentic Mexican food. It is Mexican inspired Italian food. We ordered the queso fundido as an appetizer, and it was very thick and hard to eat. The tortillas were flour, and warm but not cooked on a comal. The nachos de chili were a very strange combination of flavors and heaps of sour cream on it. Chili doesn't belong on Mexican nachos. I only ordered it thinking it was "chile con carne." The carnitas tacos were cooked in onions and very mushy which is not typical of crispy, fried carnitas. The service was rushed and the servers appeared stressed, perhaps in training. The place itself is cute and well decorated. Maybe this is good food for Italians, but for Americans who want Mexican food on vacation, I cannot recommend. read more

I left my phone in the hotel, so I have no pictures of the BEST Mexican food I have ever eaten. So fresh, not smothered in the red sauce. First the place is bright and super festive. I had to laugh as we had no reservations and it was 7:00pm. The owner told us we could have a table, but would have to clear out by 9. No problemo. Such as crazy mix of Mexican food with Italian speaking waiters and American music. My tostadas were so good- chicken, black beans, lettuce and sauce with cheese. My hubbies burrito was so delicious too. Chips with a spicy salsa delish. Cheesecake for dessert with a mescal to finish off the meal...perfect. Who knew that Mexican could be so good in Italy. Spoke with a table from LA who said they were craving Mexican after so much Italian food and they were Super satisfied...so it's just not Caucasian me!!! So.... I had Tampiqueña... completely f'in amazing. The food was great and they certainly know how to pour tequila... I left totally blitzed after 4 margaritas... definitely on my to-do-again list. Highly recommended for anyone not from Mexico or west Texas. Folks from those areas, as I am, may think "oh, that's interesting, but my best Fried's mother made better" Sure, my best friend's mother made better, but this is Rome, not west Texas, so 5 f'in stars. We were visiting Rome and of course after so many days of eating pasta we were craving our amazing Mexican food. We were close to the Vatican and decided to give this place a try. Food was good, the best you can get while in Rome. I had the enchiladas verdes, which were very tasty. We also had the tacos de bistec. The sangria was delicious. Will definitely recommend if you're in Rome. If you are tired of pasta/pizza and want good ol Mexican food don't get your hopes up. It's ok Tex mex and pretty decorating in the restaurant, but the food matters more to me. They don't have big ice cubes so ordering mezcal on the rocks with small ice that melts fast was a bit disappointing. They don't have spicy sauces or peppers. And the beans are black beans only. This is a perfectly average place to get Mexican food if you've been in Rome for quite sometime and you are homesick for California. They serve all the basics: enchiladas, burritos, tacos, etc.. They do "European Mexican" food much better than other places I've eaten at while longing for home. (I once saw meatballs with marinara sauce on a Mexican menu in London, but that's a story for another view.) My friend and I ate here a few times while studying in Rome (we lived just down the street). The service is very friendly and they make strong cuba libres and good sangria! read more

I came here several years ago and can only remember how delicious the food was. I specifically remember amazing hand made tortillas that for a Chicano girl from Los Angeles, made me miss a part of Mexico I never knew. We went here after seeing an AD in our hotel magazine. We had been craving Mexican food on our trip. We got chips and guac, they were tasty 7 euros. I got hard tacos with ground beef, no flavor. Came with more chips and guac 11 euros. Side of beans too 5 euros. My husband got the burrito with chicken 13 euros. Came with spicy salsa and guac. If you want authentic Mexican in Italy, don't go here. Nice people work there, clean bathrooms, but food was tasteless. read more

Being one of the few Mexican restaurants in a place thriving from tourism makes this restaurant have the upperhand on prices and portions (ie, they can over charge for Mexican because there is no Mexican!) we were satisfied with our meals. The food was pricey (slightly absurd for the quantity and quality) but it was decent and hit the spot. Overall I would rate lower if it were in the US, but for an Italian rare gem, 3 is a reasonable rating (ie I'd return just to get away from Italian meals and for a CHANGE). Had the Guerrero tacos (well seasoned) and the green enchiladas (which were good). Their beans are not refried red, but black which was a nice twist. God bless La Cucaracha for bringing Mexican food to Rome. This place is definitely a bit challenging to find for the first time, but you'll be glad you did. To my surprise the restaurant is actually owned by a Mexican family and you definitely feel very at home here. I also really liked the decorations and lively mood of the restaurant. The food here is also pretty good, and even if it wasn't I wouldn't complain because just having this option in Rome is fine enough. Honestly I can't remember the specific names of dishes I've tried but they always had carnitas, and the standard sides of rice and beans. I do remember one of the dishes is served with tortillas, toppings (salsa, guacamole, sour cream) and your choice of three different meats. No matter what you get the quality of the ingredients is bound to be good, and I can't remember a time where I left La Cucaracha feeling anything less than satisfied. read more

Good authentic Mexican food at a reasonable price! We were tired of Italian food and were craving something that reminded us of our roots and so we looked on Yelp and found this place. We were kind of hesitant at first since it doesn't have a lot of reviews but we decided to check it out. The first time we tried going they were completely booked, BUT they also own and operate the Chipotle style restaurant right next door. So we settled for burritos, taco bowls, nachos and margaritas, and it was all great. The next day we went back and they weren't so busy so we dined in, and the food was amazing! The owners are from Mexico so they know exactly what they're doing. Our whole group's background is Mexican, and so we're very picky when it comes to Mexican restaurants but this one definitely met our standards. Everything was great! One of the owner told us that they get really busy on the weekends and by the time we were leaving the place was getting full, so not sure why there isn't more reviews! But if you're craving authentic Mexican food the next time you're in Rome, definitely come here! read more

Italy in not known for its expansive palette of foreign food selections. In fact, I had Pho the other day in a place that had 4 Yelp stars that put Parmesan Cheese in the dry noodle soup! So I wasn't expecting anything close to what I am used to in the states in the San Jose/San Francisco area of California. Granted, I worked in a very good Mexican restaurant in SF for 3 years so even in California I am extremely picky and try my wife's patience often. So the first thing I ordered was the tried and true litmus test, well a burrito of course. I was completely surprised at how well seasoned it was in terms of flavor, very rich and not over powering. Subtle but rich Spanish and Mexican flavors. The Margaritas were delicious too and well made. There was no Italian-ization done to any of the dishes. We went back again thinking this must be a fluke, but again they delivered high quality dishes. I got a Chimichanga which is usually nothing to write home about, but is was quite unique and completely delicious. My wife order a common plate, the Fajita but is was like no Fajita you get in the states it was in a very light but extremely delightful sauce with well-seasoned chicken, red peppers and onions. Simple but so good! I highly recommend this place. You will need to book ahead of time because they are booked up in advance. Best days to go there are week days and off season but in peak season you will need to plan ahead. I know this is not a tradition "Italian" experience. Whether you are burnt out on Pizza and Pasta like were were or you just want really good Mexican food, I highly recommend this place. read more

We arrived at the La Cucaracha after making a reservation. We were initially impressed with the decor and music but things quickly changed. My daughter ordered two tacos and was brought two separate orders. We told the women who I think may be the owner and she immediately gave us a snooty attitude. She also got upset and grabbed the plate and took it back to the kitchen. There were four of us so we ordered at the same time but 3 of us finished eating al our good before the fourth plate came and only after a mix up with the order. Needless to say it was a very unpleasant experience and I do not recommend eating there. The lady was snooty and rude. The guys working there were very polite and nice. By the way. No free chips and salsa given here. The food was okay but a little salty. Not worth returning. Very disappointing and expensive. read more
