My family chose this school because Christianity is a core part of our lives, and we believed she would be surrounded by peers who shared those values. Instead, she was met with the exact opposite; mockery, unkindness, and behavior that is the furthest thing from what God teaches. This isn't about one student. This is a cultural problem, a failure in guidance and leadership. If a school claims to prioritize faith, then it should actively teach empathy, humility, and compassion and not allow hurtful behavior to go unchecked. Do better. Hold your students accountable. Teach them to live the values you preach, not just speak them. No child deserves to feel alone or targeted in a place that claims to be built on God's love.

The Principal is always hands-on, and helps with (a very efficient!) pick up and drop off line. If you call the school up, you may even get her answering phones. What makes VW extra special are the parent organizations. In addition to the PTA, VW has 2 more parent-based organizations - the WAVE Foundation and the Dad's Club. The PTA puts together school events like the book fair and school festivals. The WAVE Foundation raises money to support school programs like art, music, teacher resources, and taiko lessons. And finally the Dad's Club puts on fun events like Halloween Spooktacular maze+games, Father's Follies play, and many other social events for parents and families. The Dad's Club also lends the school space to use as a multi-purpose room. My daughter is in the Japanese Dual Language program here, where instruction for all subjects are 50% English and 50% Japanese. For example, the lastest lesson was on solids, liquids, and gasses - 固体、液体、気体. Kanji levels are the same as in Japan, and my daughter's English reading level is average or above, according to standardized tests. It's a win-win! The school offers Taiko drumming lessons and orchestra for 4th grade and older. It also has a robotic club, math club, and Student Council. Additionally, it partners with local education businesses to offer various before or after school classes such as computer programming, robotics, drawing, cooking, drama class, chess club, and so much more. Finally, what makes VW great are the Friday playdates at Verdugo Park. A lot of us go to the park after school and Fridays where parents mingle and chat while the kids play and do homework together (ok, homework is only sometimes, but still!) Taught at Paradise Canyon many times, but I don't remember names. The kids were wonderful. I taught at La Canada HS and Middle School, too. Kathy Cockerill, 8th Grade English. I had her class for a few months. Can you imagine 8th graders who were supportive to a new teacher? They were. I spent several years in a charter school later on. That's a post for another time. Absolutely not. They have small children ages 4 years old mixed in with children going into 7th grade the entire time! They use the excuse that majority of the kids attending are related to each other and cry if they cannot be with their sibling/cousin and that's why they put them all together. Disregarding kids that have no relatives present, and they do not provide age appropriate instructions. Rather, they allow their TA's to give instructions to all the kids, instead of asking of a small child can even read or write. They ask the older kids to take care of the small ones and even take them to the restroom to wash their hands or go to the bathroom. If you want your child to have age appropriate instructions or activities, along with help to go to the restroom please do not go here! The mix of preteens with kids who have not even started TK is wildly inappropriate and they use "family" and older older kids being "nurturing" as an excuse to not separate kids, hire age specific teachers and to actually provide age appropriate care for kids with a huge age gap.

Just like going to a University versus a Cal state in the university you're going to get more 1 on 1 attention. Yes... The lunch is around five dollars but that saves so much time for me in the morning and my daughter gets to have lunch with her friends at school. Some people pay five dollars for a cup of coffee, but the lunch here is great and my daughter gets to be with friends and other students in a loving environment! I would recommend the school 100% it goes pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. It's definitely better than the schools in the area. The new principal is Mrs. Worley and she's been great since taking over after Mrs. Stegman retired. The community of parents is extremely involved and volunteer for all the special events the school has often. This school feels more like a private school than a public one and it shows with all the kids loving their time learning. We feel lucky to be a part of Dunsmore Elementary.
