The Principal is always hands-on, and helps with (a very efficient!) pick up and drop off line. If you call the school up, you may even get her answering phones. What makes VW extra special are the parent organizations. In addition to the PTA, VW has 2 more parent-based organizations - the WAVE Foundation and the Dad's Club. The PTA puts together school events like the book fair and school festivals. The WAVE Foundation raises money to support school programs like art, music, teacher resources, and taiko lessons. And finally the Dad's Club puts on fun events like Halloween Spooktacular maze+games, Father's Follies play, and many other social events for parents and families. The Dad's Club also lends the school space to use as a multi-purpose room. My daughter is in the Japanese Dual Language program here, where instruction for all subjects are 50% English and 50% Japanese. For example, the lastest lesson was on solids, liquids, and gasses - 固体、液体、気体. Kanji levels are the same as in Japan, and my daughter's English reading level is average or above, according to standardized tests. It's a win-win! The school offers Taiko drumming lessons and orchestra for 4th grade and older. It also has a robotic club, math club, and Student Council. Additionally, it partners with local education businesses to offer various before or after school classes such as computer programming, robotics, drawing, cooking, drama class, chess club, and so much more. Finally, what makes VW great are the Friday playdates at Verdugo Park. A lot of us go to the park after school and Fridays where parents mingle and chat while the kids play and do homework together (ok, homework is only sometimes, but still!) Educational enrichment and social engagement at VW is top notch, and I can't say enough good things about the education and environment.

Parents are just trying to pick them up. It doesn't need to feel so aggressive every day. A smile goes a long way. A calm tone goes a long way. Instead of acting like wardens, try creating a space that actually feels safe and welcoming for the kids. I have been informed that the teacher has been yelling at students, including screaming very close to children's ears. Both my children attended this school and I regret my decision of enrolling them here to this day. They suffered verbal abuse by particular teachers (and most staff including support staff) at this school. As soon as they left this school both my kids excelled in school and their teachers had nothing but praise for both their behavior as well as academics. They earned 2s at this school and were not once selected as gate or honor students, they never once were praised or awarded for being kind, respectful, and hard-working. At their new school, they immediately became honor roll students and identified as gifted. Sad that this school staff never once praised my children in any shape or form but instead chose to ridicule and mock them. One of the teachers kicked my child who was a third grader at the time, had her outside the classroom for half an hour then sent her to a first grade class for not doing her math homework in Armenian that was the same exact math and problems as the math in her English. My son is in special education and has an IEP and when I went to pick him up, they had dumped him off at the gate with at least 100 other children without an aide in site. There was no single file line to pick up the children just a MOB of parents. I was pressed so hard up against other people pushing against the gate, that the treat I brought my son got smashed in my purse. Then the school principal shows up, and I think- great! she'll ask everyone to form a line. NO! she proceeds to escort select children out to the parents she knows and prefers, so they don't have to wait. It took me over an hour to get access to my son who I could see through the fence the entire time. And believe it or not, the school year gets worse from here. Please, if you see these reviews try to arrange for your child to go to Keppel. I wish I had. Needless to say we will not be returning for another hellscape school year. I will add that all the reviews that talk about racial profiling if you are not Armenian, are true. Sadly.
