Lawrence Woodcraft Architect

Lawrence Woodcraft Architect

Woodland Hills

As a first time home builder, I walked into their offices as green as can be with no idea what I…read morewas doing or the journey that I was about to embark on. Astra and Lawrence guided me through the ups and downs of homebuilding and dealing with the city, contractors, engineers and the politics behind it all. They were AMAZING and couldn't hold them in higher regard. If you speak with them, ask them about my project and you will understand how amazing they were. Don't forget to ask the bit about suing the City with our local council members and gaining a favorable decision in arbitration!! Yeah!! Don't bother looking anywhere else, you found your architect's!!

Lawrence and his staff designed a home and a detached garage w/living quarters for me and my…read morefamily. The project was rather large as it was almost 6,000 sq ft. I came to Lawrence's company with plans from a prior architect that were a total mess. The plans from the prior so called "Architect" were ripped to shreds by LADBS, because they were "substandard. These plans as designed made the project extremely costly. Lawrence and his staff, Jewell in particular, quickly got the plans up to par and the cost of the projected plummeted. The plans also passed LADBS with relatively few hitches. When picking an Architect the most important factor is to get a cost effective structural design that complies with all building codes and yet meets all of your design needs. Lawrence met and exceeded all of these factors for my project. As far as the overall project design, he maintained the style of the neighborhood and my taste. The area that the project is in is a Residential/Agricultural Zone in Woodland Hills that was once farm land. While people in this area try to put a Mediterranean Villa style design or as one of my neighbors adjacent to me has a 70's stucco/90's space age/Chinese zen style home, with this in mind Lawrence and I set out to retain the "farm" style of the area and stay away from these other trends. For the additional living quarters and garage, we ended up designing a barn with wood siding and a highly efficient and beautiful metal roof that gets compliments from neighbors and passerby's. The height and style in fact matched another neighbors barn adjacent to me. Basically the barn fits right in and is far from an eye sore. I hope my neighbors follow suit with this design. The main home at the front of the property is also a farm style single story home that he designed to retain all of the original charm that the original farm home has. He designed it to be a single story farm style that again matches our neighborhood. This design utilized a lot of the key features and spaces that I loved about the existing home and simply made it better. It also is going to save me a lot of money as we are retaining these spaces. Lawrence and Jewell did a great job!

Someone answered right away and seemed confident and eager that the company could do the work for us. Representatives were sent a day later to come check out the space and gather the info necessary to provide a quote. I should have known on that day that EGN was just smoke and mirrors. First of all, during the ~5 minutes that they were actually here, no one took measurements of anything. Not a thing. They basically eyeballed it. They didn't really go in the closet to get a closer look. I was naïve and thought maybe they had done these jobs plenty of times in the past or something... LOL. They said they could do the work, they'd get me a quote ASAP, and left. Well, I got the quote a few days later... way lower than it should have been. I called and asked a few questions, and they said they would get back to me. Apparently, they didn't actually realize the extent of the job. There were no measurements, and they asked me to send dimensions over to them. LOL, what?! I waited for a few more days -- nothing. So I called again and they said the representative was no longer there. Okay. I was told I would hear back once they were able to figure some things out on their end. We needed some work done on the door, for instance, and they needed to discuss internally how best to approach it. The door was wired a certain way, and we needed the wires removed. EGN said they had a couple of ideas and would let me know. Then, they just never followed up. Approximately 2.5 months go by, and I get a call one afternoon from a very sheepish person who said he is from EGN and wanted to know how he can go about getting the estimate approved. By now, we had obviously moved forward with someone else. The work had been done well over a month ago, at least. The fact that EGN called after so much time had passed was... almost insulting. Definitely laughable. Especially because they still had not figured out what to do with the door. I guess they were hoping they could buy more time to figure it out...? I would highly recommend NOT using EGN. Maybe they were going through some issues internally or whatever, but however they handled it was pitiful. Go get a quote from somewhere more reputable.

I scheduled a consultation with Eugene from STEN Engineering to discuss two very different…read morestructural issues at my house, and I was extremely impressed. The first was figuring out how to realign a very complicated roofline so that rainwater would channel properly. The house has been built and added onto in stages over roughly 100 years, so every addition and alteration made the roofline more complicated and less cohesive. I had literally spent hours sitting on the roof trying to figure out a workable solution. Eugene looked at the situation, thought it through for about 10 minutes, and sketched out an option that simply would never have occurred to me. It was practical, elegant, and made immediate sense. The consultation was some of the best $400 I've spent. The second issue was understanding how well the house is braced for earthquakes and how the existing foundation works structurally. Again, Eugene combined a strong engineering mind with real-world practical experience and explained everything in a way that I could actually understand. I almost never take the time to write reviews, but I was impressed enough that here I am writing one. Eugene is smart, thoughtful, practical, and very good at explaining complicated structural issues in plain English. I would absolutely call him again.

He was incredibly knowledgeable about the specific regulations and challenges when it comes to building in Topanga which is essential if you want to build there. Geoff met us at the property to talk through some thoughts and ideas. He was incredibly kind, helpful, and thoughtful. He then worked very quickly and efficiently to give us a detailed analysis of his thoughts, recommendations, estimated building costs, and next steps. Ultimately we ended up not pursuing the land and we're very grateful to Geoff for helping us understand the building process better. It was a pleasure working with Topanga Architecture and we look forward to hopefully working with them again in the future.
