This will always be my favorite burrito place in the bay area. I've been coming to La Costena for over 20 years, even before they move to their current location. Best Burritos, hands down. My favorite is Al Mojo de Ajo with black beans. Very flavorful beef. If you like all the toppings, the Mountain View special includes most of them for one price, and if you're super hungry you can get the super size burrito which is like 2 burritos in 1! Excited to rediscover this place in its new-to-us location after formerly visiting decades ago (yup, I'm old!) when it was in the back of a grocery store on Rengstorff! It's now in a non-descript strip mall on Middlefield, in the same plaza as Dollar Tree. Ordering was at the counter - gone are the days where you walked along and requested toppings as they built the burrito in front of you. Seating was plentiful. There was no line - surprising - but it was a Saturday afternoon. I imagine they're more crowded on weekdays. Ordered a regular burrito ($9.16) and a super burrito ($17.41 plus $4.13 for adding cheese, guacamole and sour cream, so $21.54!). Whoa, that super burrito was the size of TWO regular burritos, so plan accordingly! Five stars for nostalgia and taste - The burritos were quite tasty, though my regular burrito had too many beans and not enough chicken. Also the whole burrito was a little dry - maybe I should have chosen a different kind of salsa instead of pico de gallo but I don't like things too spicy. My husband enjoyed his super burrito, which wasn't dry because of all the add-ons (at an extra price). Subtract one star for the poor meat-to-bean ratio and for the upcharges on the additional toppings. As mentioned above, the super burrito was $17.41 regularly, but after adding cheese, guac and sour cream, it was $21.54! The food is amazing and worth the wait in line! Definitely recommend to go prior to the lunch rush. This is a no frills taqueria that serves quality burritos and tacos. We ordered the Super Burriot with Carne Asada. It was filled with rice and beans and a dab of salsa. Disappointed that they charge to add anything extra including: onions, cilantro, jalapenos. They use to not charge for these. Despite the up charges, it is a solid burrito and we will be back. read more

We were in the Mountain View area and craving Mexican food. We were intrigued by the size of the super burrito. The different visuals of the burrito sizes were super helpful. We got the super taco that had meat, onions, rice, and beans on a corn tortilla. I also got the loaded nachos with al pastor. The Al pastor meat was marinated nicely and they were generous with the meat portions. The super burrito carne asada was massive, it's pretty much the size of your forearm. The cheese, sour cream, and guacamole are all considered additional fees on top of the base $16 price so it comes out to $20 for a super burrito. read more

The food was not very good, the actual items are a lot smaller than the pictures and they got my order wrong. The individual portions in the dishes were very minimal. For example I ordered cheese in my nachos and the amount was so small I had to hunt to find any. read more

i'm here for business and I was looking for a good Mexican place, this one propped up so I went to go check it out. Not very good customer interaction nobody that worked there asked me how I was doing nothing. I ordered a burrito with Carne Asada and a regular quesadilla and I even gave them a two dollar tip when I paid. When my food was ready we made eye contact and the guy working and said here you go put my food on the counter and he literally just walked away. I looked in my bag curious to see if there was any hot sauce or salsa in there and there was not I went to go look up and there was nobody in sight so I just walked out. After all that I was hoping the food would be good and well it wasn't the best Mexican food I've ever ate by burrito fell apart wasn't wrapped correctly just a bad experience altogether I don't recommend this place read more

A no frills establishment that serves generous portions and reasonable prices. Came here on a Sunday afternoon and my boyfriend said this place used to be a taco stand that eventually got their own space. And I was not disappointed. We got 3 tacos each, horchatas, and a super quesadilla. The tacos had generous portions of meat. The super quesadilla was a bit spicy because we got it with spicy salsa, so if you're not good at handling spice, I'd stay away from the spicy. And the horchata were refreshing and were able to wash down the spice. My boyfriend drank both of our drinks because the salsa was so spicy! Service is pretty basic - you order at the counter and you seat yourself and clean up. There is a convenient sink by the door for you to wash up after scarfing down the food. read more

I almost always get the regular burritos here but the tacos are great too. Get the 3 taco plate and you can also get it with rice and beans. Usually I get today's special as it comes with a free can soda. My favorite is the chicken mole but all of them are really good. Service always awesome the cheifs happily make you food. The burritos are really good here. The nachos weren't bad. The al pastor on top was delicious. But super good value. The super Burrito was crazy! I mean I saw the size but dang, when you pick that thing up it is heavy!!!! We are still eating it! The Burrito is really where it's at! But the spicy was spicy. Maybe will go medium next time. My friends rave about this place, so I decided to give it a try by picking up a tripas burrito. It was decent overall but I prefer my tripas to be crispier. Their hot salsa is legit pretty spicy. Next time I'll ask for medium or pico de gallo (in addition if I can) because that might cut through the heaviness of the burrito. FYI, they are still adding on a $2 to-go fee. read more

Solid Mexican joint that I truly believe is the "best in Mountain View"...but I think that's mostly due to lack of of competition haha. One KEY point about this place is that, despite the picture of the world largest burrito (from 2013), ironically, their burritos are not nearly as good (too much beans and rice, not enough meat) as their tacos, which come 3 for ~$8, which is pretty decent considering the area. Their al pastor is usually pretty solid, and definitely the best I've had in Mountain View, and I have no complaints about their carne asada. Their chicken tends to be a little dry, and unfortunately, their tripe could use a little more cleaning (blargh). I haven't tried the lengua, which is supposed to be good, but I'm a little wary after trying their tripa. Their salsa verde is decent, but I probably wouldn't recommend their mole nor their spicy sauce, which are pretty one-note. The green is a solid accompaniment to them all, however. Overall, a decent place to stop by for tacos if you're in Mountain View, though if you have the option, I'd probably try to make it to Sunnyvale or even San Jose for better Mexican fare. Been going here since the 1990s. Tonight was the first time I've was disappointed. I ordered a super burrito carne asada with salsa verde. It was mostly rice and beans and did not taste salsa verde. Not only did I not get it on the burrito I asked for some on the side and they wanted to charge for it. First time that happened. Shame to see this place change. read more

I've been coming here for over 20 years, and they've won Best Burrito by the Mountain View Voice almost every year. The current location has easy parking and is next to a great liquor store. More on that later. So why write a Yelp review now? Has the customer service gotten friendlier? no. Do they actually pick up the phone now? no. Do they answer your emails for catering orders? no! (Pls note, this is still a 5 star review. The burritos are THAT good). It's because they now have Doordash and Grubhub online ordering! YAY!!! I think the takeout link on this page goes to Grubhub. You can preorder and the food will be ready. They have a special table for Grubhub/Doordash pickup, and they're pretty good about being on time. You pay a couple bucks more per burrito, but if you're in a hurry you can save the 10 minutes. Everything is good here. The carnitas, the carne asada, and the grilled chicken are all excellent. My buddy just tried the chile verde and was also very pleased. You can build it a la carte, or they have the Mountain View special, which is basically a super burrito. Drinks choices are limited. They have a small case of coke products. The cool thing is that Giant's Liquors is right next store, with chips and a huge selection of drinks. So order your burrito first, then head next store while they make it. A final note on catering. They don't make it easy, but you can order in person the day of your event. They open at 8, which is mind boggling. But I pop in, order 20 Mountain View Specials for noon pickup, and they've always had the food ready when promised. read more

I'm Caucasian so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but as far as our family is concerned, La Costena is our go-to burrito takeout place. We get burritos for the entire family about once every other month, and we always love them. We usually buy a couple containers of guacamole, which is also very good. The restaurant is cafeteria style, you order and pay, then they call your number and you get your food. I've never waited more than 5-10 minutes so they're speedy. My favorite is the Al Pastor pork, or Carnitas. Try it - I think you'll like it. read more

No AC on a rare hundred degree day! Reg burrito is 40/40/20 rice, beans & meat, but the portions are generous.

Al Pastor regular burrito; Dry with no salsa on the side and not nearly enough inside. There was too much rice inside and this really needed some avocado and sour cream or something to help with dryness. They were busy and the person at the counter wasn't overly helpful. There are too many great options for this kind of food so won't be back. Positive note was the pork was crispy but zero pineapple flavor that one expects with Al Pastor. read more

They make the best burritos in the Bay Area. They're wrapped impeccably and never fall apart, and can be ordered large. Having 8 or 9 different seasoned meat choices is nice, but you can't pick the ingredients as it's made like in the old location. They have faster service now that they no longer have a convenience store taking up most of the space. Parking is much better but they don't take phone orders. They contract with the delivery services now, but it's just a restaurant and the burritos are far superior to the other items. They hold the Guinness record for largest burrito ever made, which was done at the local park in Mountain View. The 1997 feat's documented on the wall in this new location. The service and speed of service are excellent, but the enchiladas suffer being somewhat watery. You come here for the burritos and they're the best, so one must understand this and that explains several of the poor reviews I've read. I think the quality of the meats and burritos are good enough, the expectation is that everything else will be as incredible and that sets an almost unfair standard for the business since the burritos are so good. Keep in mind you can visit here in the morning when other places are closed. None of the food items are bad, but the burritos are overwhelming better. read more

Their burrito tastes decent, but they add extra charges for everything, which isn't clearly indicated on the menu. You'll be charged extra for cheese, guacamole, Spanish rice, and sour cream in your burritos. They also have an additional charge for lengua. It's confusing that when you order a super burrito, it doesn't include beans, cheese, or sour cream. So, they're essentially charging $14.53 just for meat and tortilla? I used to come to this place when it was located off the corner of Old Middlefield and Rengstorff many years ago. Since then not much has changed about their food. They continue to have a consistent burrito. Meat of choice, beans, rice, and whatever other toppings you would like. I like to order a regular burrito with carne asada, refried beans, rice, and guacamole. It's a delicious mixture of ingredients although I've had several occasions where the carne asada is too greasy or it has an off taste. The burrito is wrapped up nicely so it doesn't fall apart when you bite into it. They don't have a larger selection of salsas for their foods which I don't like. They charge extra for Chile's vinagres which I found out after I got my order. They complete the orders quickly. They have a large spacious area to dine in. The cashier I always see never cracks a smile. This place is really great spot in Mountain View to grab a burrito to-go. read more

This place might be the best value I have ever seen. Their regular burrito is big, then there is an even bigger one that is sufficient for a family of 4 and costs about what you pay for a normal burrito at most places. Their chicken (I got a regular chicken burrito with black beans) is good, but has onions chunks mixed in which I don't like (personal preference).
