from front left: apple empanada, concha, and coconut cookie...had a bite, couldn't wait!

Saw the signs for this new , small Mexican bakery this week, and decided to stop by. This review is for La Colmena in New Caney; Yelp assigned the wrong business name. Tried to change it, but can't it is In a small, older strip center, on Community Drive, near the laundromat. They have a small tent sign by the street, and a large sign over the store. The bakery is clean, large, and has no tables, but they do have coffee on, and quite a few baked goods. They advertised sausage and tamales for sale, as well, on separate signage. Looks like they make cakes for any occasion; especially birthday, wedding, baby showers, and more There are trays and tongs, to choose your own baked goods. Did not see prices on every item, but I bought 3 things, and the total was $2.40. Hoping they do post prices soon, but I would ask, next time. Two large cases, with multiple rows hold so many favorites; the pound cake type muffins, with or without nuts, gingerbread pigs, shaped cookies, conchas in 2 flavors, and empanadas. There was a separate rolling rack nearby, with baked goods still cooling, and I found my concha, there. Good Mexican pastries are not overly sweet, so they pair well with milk, coffee or juice, and these follow that rule, and I like it. They do have some, more sugary items, like "donas", or cinnamon sugar donuts, etc. I chose a Concha, with the white topping, and it was Very good; fresh, soft, and just the right amount of topping. The apple empanada I had was good, with a nice amount of filling (they also had pineapple, and calabasa), and the round cookie with toasted coconut was similar to shortbread; crumbly and light. I enjoyed all 3 pastries. Looking forward to returning. I was here at 9am, and they still had a good selection of items, and all were very fresh.
