Delicious and authentic. We like to both eat in / byob and take out on occasion. Ambiance transports you, lots of cool decorations and art, love it. One thing I'll mention with all respect to the cooking, Little lite on the salt for several dishes but that's fine as some people have health considerations and the rest of us can give it a dash when needed. I'm just mentioning as it can really open up the flavors they worked so hard to cram in there so go with your tastebuds and don't be afraid to give it a dash after you've sampled a few bites. I am SO glad I came across this joint! The Mexican decor is so authentic and awesome, very homey vibes from the worker there when we went today, and the food was AWESOME! I got the chicken tinga platter, which was melt off the (not in) bone and so moist (and pretty dang spicy, which I like), and my friend got the pollo tacos which were also simple, yet amazing. I had a lot of hope for La Cocina Mexicana. Yes, the food is tasty but they used Tyson Frozen Chicken for my fajita, and they forgot some of our order so that's why the rating is so low. I can't justify spending $16 for a fajita with chicken I can just get at the freezer isle. Maybe next time I'll try something else. read more

This was our the first time eating here and we had a wonderful time. The restaurant is small and out of the way but very big on service and the food was fantastic. The Food was fresh and made from scratch and made with attention to detail in every meal. The service was spot on. The waiter and owner took time out to speak with us which made our dining experience even more enjoyable. Only negative thing I can say is that they don't have steak and shrimp meal combo, they should consider making one. We would definitely eat here again and would recommend others to do so as well. read more

Delicious food and friendly staff. The staff is very accommodating and friendly. I have loved the food every time I go. Last time I had the #11 Puerco en su salsa. I had it with the spicy green sauce. It was very good! The pork was so very tender. The sauce is spicy for sure but so flavorful. My wife had carnitas tacos. She enjoyed those as well. We appreciated that the food did not seem very salty as it can with some Mexican food. Will definitely be back. read more

Used to go a few times a month or so when the mood for Hispanic food hit me. They were good with my allergy, but then somthing changed. Was told guacamole didnt have cheese in it, but when I got home and tried it, it definitely did. I don't know if this was a mistake by whomever made it, but that was a let down. I was also told I could not have the sauce on the side for my takeout tacos. Ok? So I get home and everything is mush. Overall though, the taste was good. Some items are fairly priced, but then some are expensive. I mean, its hispanic food so its all inexpensive ingredients, I expect it to be fairly cheap. Inside eating area could use an update, and outside of building is in need of cosmetic repairs, but many old buildings in the area are like this. If I could, I would give a 3.5, but I dont feel like it compares to other 4 star reviews I have written. read more

Our family loves this restaurant! We love Yuni, and the food is always good. We love the guacamole, and the main entrees are always great.

Nice place with super friendly staff. The chorizo quesadillo could use a little more cheese but was very flavorful. The bistek mexicana is not quite enough for two to split, but was good too. The decor is a bit on the bizarre side, lots of skeletons and bizarre paintings. Worth a stop for that alone. read more

Was in town visiting my sister and her family. After a hot day walking around the folk festival, I decided to treat them to a dinner of their choice. They choose La Covina. Upon arriving, was welcomed to no air conditioning, and was seated to a lovely table with a large floor fan blowing directly in my face. But things like A/C breakdown, so let this pass. Was then informed they didn't have fresh ice tea brewed, so choose a glass of ice water. When drinks were served , I was given one bottle of water and rest of the table also was served drinks in bottles. So guess refills are not on the menu. I don't eat out a lot, and can understand the Mexican sodas my nieces ordered coming with no free refills. But this is the first time in my dining experience that water and coke products weren't subject to free refills. This should have been my first sign to get up and leave. Next we placed our order, 2 appetizers and 5 entrees. I myself like Fajitas, and was glad to seem them on the menu, and ordered. I had to order the double portion to get 2 meats(steak and chicken). So to get a half a chicken breast added it was an up charge of $15. Now mind you this wasn't Fajitas for 2, I paid $15 for a half a chicken breast. And to get sour cream and guacamole was another $3 up charge. The appetizer came out, 1 order of guacamole and 1 order of salsa and chips. Yes , I said salsa and chips. This is the first Mexican restaurant I've ever been to that didn't serve salsa and chips when you walked in the door, you had to order them. The guacamole was nothing to right home about, watery and covered in some type of tasteless cheese. When entree's were served we are off paper plates and plastic silverware, this was just laughable. Guess it was the dishwashers day off. Was also surprised at the double fajita meal. I got approximately 1/4 cup of some runny soup they called refried beans, and corn tortillas that were steamed to long and just all stuck together. Other than the guacamole and sour cream I had to pay $3 for, nothing else. No rice, no shredded lettuce and no salsa. Well say the Fajita meat and vegetables were seasoned well. But other that that, this was no $33 entree and the plates were disintegrating as soon as the got wet, so don't try enjoying your meal. Needless to say, I was ready to get out of there. And family decided to pack up the rest of there meals. They decided to share a deep fried ice cream, so I told them to go ahead. This was a treat, 1 ball of hard packed, fried long enough to brown the outside, that broke the plastic spoons brought out with it, lol. Along with the ice cream, I was also presented the check. It was for 1 item at $117.25 and a second item for $6. Nothing itemized, so no clue was you are paying for. I consider myself a very generous tipper, normally over 20%. But with this meal and service I could not. The bill with tax was $130.91, I round it up to $140 being nice. I was presently surprised on getting out to my car, and find what I presumed to be the owner/cook telling me I didn't leave a big enough tip. He ended this by telling me I was not welcome back, something he never needed to worry about to begin with. Use to go quite a bit, and loved the food. Haven't been there in a while, so I decided to stop for lunch (7$ for two large burritos? Pretty awesome). Boyfriend has a dairy allergy, asked about the Guacamole, said it usually is made with cheese but they can do without it (I know on the menu it said no modification, but he said he could do it), get home to the smallest little bit of Guacamole I have ever seen (5$ for barley half an avocado) and with cheese bits in it (didn't notice until after he took a bite)! He had a reaction, and I am livid. Not to mention I used to get the sauce on the side (to make sure the burrito would not be soggy when I got home) but they said 'we cannot do that' now, OK. Fine, change your policy. That does not excuse the lack of filling, or cold food, but hey, whatever. The man behind the counter used to seem more caring, now it just feels like you are bothering the people who work there. Just lost a customer, but hey if they want to cut corners, half the amount of chips they give, give you the tiniest amount of Guacamole and not want to please their customers then I'll go someplace else. It sucks since this place used to be my favorite spot in Kutztown, now I'll just go buy taco shells and meat from Giant! read more

La Cocina Mexicana is a solid place to grab a bite. We went here recently for lunch on a quiet Sunday afternoon and had no problems getting seated. It's actually more spacious inside than it looks from the outside. What's up with all the Frida Kahlo artwork? She's plastered all over this place. Nothing gets you in the Mexican mood more than having Frida's eyes watch over you as you eat. The food is standard Mexican fare. The nachos with beef were a rather small serving but very tasty. They won't please everyone as the nachos were almost soggy from all the toppings. Fortunately for me, I like them this way. My companion's beef tacos were all right but my burrito was surprisingly massive. The beef was delicious but the pork lacked a lot of flavor. Service is efficient and prices are fair. My only pet peeve is that they charge you for refills on fountain drinks. Boo. read more

I think the food here is consistently pretty good. After eating here at least a dozen times I've never been severely disappointed. The service can be a little spotty sometimes, but it's a small place and they usually only have one waiter/waitress and if the place is really busy this can be a little bit of a problem. It should be mentioned that the Mexican food here is a little unique which I really like (but others may find it to adventurous). The salsa is made with cabbage instead of just tomatoes and the green sauce is spicy and the red sauce mild. The fajitas and enchiladas are very good. I think it's a great place to grab some very good Mexican food in Kutztown. Just don't be in a rush when you visit. read more

Sorry :( My roommate and I went here because we used to live very close to this place. The people there are nice enough, but not very attentive. The food is all bland! Seriously bland. What kind of Mexican restaurant food has no flavor? The guacamole had no taste. No spices or anything. And i know avocados don't have much flavor but I've had better dip from a packet. We both got the chicken fajitas...the chicken was bland, like they had boiled it, and that was it. there were almost no vegetables. It was soggy, and just...I cannot get over the fact there was NOTHING but boiled chicken with no taste! Like I was chewing...and I could tell there was texture of something, but no taste to it. Authentic Mexican food in Kitztown.. Would be a five star if they served liquor..Imo Margaritas are a neccesity for great Mexican food. If the avocados are ripe, the guacamole can be awesome. The ambiance of the restaurant is adorned with hand carved and painted chairs as well as other Mexican decorations.
