We drove by this spot while looking for parking so we could walk around and check out some of the stores in this old town Albuquerque area & it looked so adorable, I wanted to check it out. After visiting a few of the other stores we made our way over to La Choco Salty & Sweet to grab a quick sweet to eat and support a local shop. From the outside it looks like just a chocolate shop, but the sweets section is just a small area up front and the rest of the store is tourist type products to buy like clothing, knick-knacks, etc. The sweets area is cute, they have a little cafe type area set up for a few people to sit and they have all the chocolates on display. Most of the treats look pretty good, but the prices are a bit high for some of the things. We generally enjoy grabbing a few truffles when visiting sweet spots like this so we selected four truffles to try. They do not have clear pricing in the case for the truffles nor do they provide any kind of hint to what is inside of some of them aside from the name of the truffle. I had asked the woman working what was inside one or two of them and she seemed annoyed I asked. We ended up getting the four we picked out anyway, and I was kind of bummed afterward. Not only were they $3+ EACH but they tasted like they had sat in the display case for several days. They were a bit hard, stale and didn't really have a lot of flavor to them so I was a little upset we had spent about $17 here on five things of chocolate that weren't really anything to write home about. read more

A sweet lil shop in old town for tasty treats. I had a scoop of rocky road ice cream on a sugar cone. I'll have to go back to try a chocolate covered apple and peanut brittle. I was walking my dogs in Old Town & could smell coffee and it had me craving some- I usually get the caramel blended Frappuccino from Starbucks, so I asked a sweet lady who was working if she could make one for me. Beautiful facade to the store, very colorful and cheerful. The chocolate covered snacks are good, very standard, nothing too special. Nice place to sit down and grab some coffee to relax. A touristy hub, cashing in on the concept of "tourist trap" by boasting sweet treats with chili, such as fudge, coffee, ice cream, caramel apples, and more... and yes I fell for the green chili coffee trap. I would have fell for more 'must-trys' but while everything looked amazingly drool worthy the prices kept me from indulging. Very expensive-but I guess most people implore their 'treat yo'self c'est la vie when in Old Town. Now normally while on vacation, I would have caved but everything had this 'left out for days' look, the staff wasn't that friendly, and wasn't helpful answering questions about the weights of per lb products or prices of groups of treats. As for the coffee, I tried it, but never again.. must-when I'll stick to pinon coffee. La Choco's specialty coffee is highly priced, but is made with the same syrups you get at gas stations for half the price & their creamer/milk was french vanillla coffeemate capsules...so what was the point of paying for a flavor shot when I also wanted cream that was only provided with a flavor. Let's be realistic here. Old Town is riddled with candy stores after the raging success of the Candy Lady. This is my second visit to La Choco and I really want to like them, primarily because their location is really awesome. But I just can't muster the affection I'm looking for. First of all, their product is just average. Tonight we got the milk chocolate caramel pecan clusters. They are slighter bigger than some of the candy places but very overpriced and taste like something from a chain store or a prepackaged box. Second, they just aren't friendly. Old Town is all about that tourism, baby! And tourism means you should smile at least on occasion. I shouldn't be the one trying to make this less awkward. And speaking of professionalism, spelling your product correctly should be a priority. It's one thing to spell something wrong to be cute. Their forte is in their hot chocolates and smoothies. In particular, you want to try the Mexican Hot Cocoa although the other ones with chile sound interesting. Nothing like strolling down Old Town sipping on a hot Cocoa from this joint. I'm not too much of a sweets person, but if you're playing tourist why not just go and check things out? For a weekend Old Town was pretty quiet, including La Choco. I walked in and it's pretty crowded, the majority of the space is for chairs and tables but the actual candy display/coffee bar/ice cream shop is in a smaller room off to the side. They use every inch of that space available, and they had just made a fresh batch of fudge and were giving out some samples and tried a lot. I'm not a huge fudge fan so I took a pass on that but got an Arnold Palmer and they had this chile peanut brittle which was pretty good so I got a bag of that. OH! They also have Blue Sky as well, kind of; blue rock candy, so if you're a Breaking Bad fan you can get that here. So, the Palmer was ok but that chile peanut brittle! I only got two things here, but both were amazing. The Spicy Chile Peanut Brittle in Hot was so good. It was truly spicy, but perfectly balanced with the sweet of the brittle. I also really loved the Green Chile Fudge (yes I went all in on the chile thing but when in Rome...). It had the same great flavor balance as the brittle and I wish I'd gotten more. This is our favorite dessert spot in old town, plus I don't have to worry about taking my kids inside and seeing trashy stuff like we did at the candy lady. ‍ My favorite is a frozen chocolate banana, but I got an apple this time, and it was D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S. I have no patience for people who are not open within an hour after their posted hours. They might've had great products, who knows?

We picked up a couple of milk chocolate and dark chocolate single pieces of candy and we were not impressed. The chocolate had practically no chocolate flavor and lacked smoothness and richness that one looks for in good chocolate. I don't know if this is a different interpretation of chocolate, but we did not enjoy it. So disappointing. Waited for the employees to finish their cake and chatting while I sat waiting. Bought candy when I was in Old Town brought it back to the hotel to eat and I was so disappointed in the quality. It is some of the worst candy I have ever had. Got a rum truffle that was stale, had no rum flavoring and tasted like it had been wrapped in plastic for days. Hoping it was a fluke I went to eat the peanut butter cup, it too was dry, tasted like plastic wrap, and the peanut butter filling was chalky. A Reese's Peanut Butter cup would have been better. Small little candy and shake shack on the east side of Old Town. Our shakes were absolutely delicious! I had horchatas and my daughter classic chocolate. My daughter said hers Was one of the tastiest shakes she's ever had! In addition to being tasty, it was also beautiful with caramel swirled over the whipped cream. My Horchata was authentic tasting and quite yummy. Perfect stop on a hot summer day. Can't wait to go back. I'm also dying to try their candied apples with chili powder on my next visit. Wonderful little candy shop! My partner and I just stopped in today to have a cup of coffee and take a load off while wandering through old town. The owner is super nice and comped one of our coffees because her machine was a little slow. Coffee was very good. Bought some green chile chocolate here for around 5$. The taste was ok, just spicy enough, but the texture was strange - like it had melted and resolidified. I don't think they tempered it correctly. For the price I was bummed. I almost orderd a hot chocolate but then I noticed the bottles of Hershey's syrup they must make it with. I won't be going back. read more
