We booked a night at La Cascina because we went out for dinner at Hof van Cleve, which is located relatively nearby. We received all the required information to get into our room, as nobody would be present when we arrived. This was fine, although when visiting a B&B I actually prefer someone to be there to see us to our room.
Especially when certain things are not as it should be. We found a used glass and full ashtray on our balcony, but seeing as nobody was there and this was not something I needed someone for, we had no real means of voicing this. The next day, it felt like an afterthought so we decided to let it slide. We also found hairs in the shower, which was a bit of a disappointment. There's nothing to be done about it, but I expected better cleaning for the price we paid.
The room was quite big, which is a plus, and the bed was quite good. We found the pillows to be a bit big, but this is a personal preference so it's not crucial to this review.
On to my main issue: the tap water is advertised as non-potable, but we were not aware in advance. I tend to consume copious amounts of water, which made this to be quite an issue. In the fridge, we found 2 small bottles (one still, one sparkling), which to the B&B's credit are offered free of charge. We did carry some iced tea, so had that, but it's not a substitute for water. If you don't have potable water flowing from your tap (which honestly, in Belgium is unheard of), I would suggest to foresee at least one large bottle of water in the room.
Breakfast was adequate, although I had seen photos which were much nicer than what was on offer today. The good thing is that we were still full of last night's meal, so this wasn't a big deal. Disappointing for sure, but we wouldn't have been able to each much anyway.
Again, all this is said bearing in mind the price we paid (€160). Had we paid half, I'd have understood quite well, but this is far from cheap and the only real justification I can see is the size of the room. In all, it was convenient for us to stay here, but besides that I wouldn't rate it too highly. read more
