We went to La Cantine de Lulu specifically to try the beignets de fleurs de courgettes. The standard order was six, which was plenty as a starter for the two of us. They are lightly breaded, but the nooks and crannies of the flower can contain additional bits of breading that make them more filling than they look. This was a tasty niçois snack, but probably something we wouldn't get that often.
I was tempted by the polenta in gorgonzola sauce that was one of the day's specials, but instead got the escalope de veau à la creme. It was pretty good, but drowned in mushrooms -- I ate probably half of them, and when I was done I had nearly an entire plate of mushrooms left. The creme sauce was quite good and tasted like a not-too-heavy stroganoff. My wife had the merda de can (gnocchi made with Swiss chard) in gorgonzola sauce, and said it was a bit vegetable-y and heavy. The sauce was great if you like gorgonzola, though. The menu overall is full of regional dishes, and I highly recommend it for that. We weren't blown away by anything we ordered, but it was good, and if we visit Nice again we'll likely go back and try some of their other offerings.
The service was terrific. Our server was nice and personable, answering any questions we had about the menu, but typically French in leaving us to our meal (I should add that I hate the constant "How is everything?" of American dining). The next day, we were walking back from the Nice Ville train station to our hotel when we heard someone say, "Bonjour," as they passed by -- I turned around and there was our server from the previous night giving us a wave. read more
