I learned that it's not normal to find a restaurant that serves paella in the evening; that this…read moredish is more of a daytime dish. I also learned that getting a table reservation for 6 or more the same day when it's a Saturday can be a challenge. Thankfully I wasn't the one doing the leg work on this one. Shouts to Borja, my Spanish connection. I can't do much to compare with other restaurants in Madrid as I mostly ate tapas and only one other formal dinner, which did not involve paella and was on the other side of town... but I can tell you that when I return to Madrid there is one place I know for sure that I can guarantee a good dish of paella at a more than reasonable price. For 7 of us, we each shelled out E35 (and one guy didn't pay anything because it was his birthday) and we enjoyed several cañas (lost track), 3 or 4 bottles of wine, 3 or 4 cocktails, 3 HUGE plates of paella, 3 orders of tapas and gut splitting desert at the end... for around $45 after conversion. I couldn't do that in Los Angeles if I tried. The service was polite, prompt and elegant. The food was so good I think a few fingers were lost in the fight for the last morsels, and the ambiance of the place was fun but not loud. If you want Europe through the backdoor, and you want paella when most Spaniards are waking from their disco nap, go to El Albur... but have reservations unless you don't mind waiting or eating at the bar.

Went here because I was craving to try pulpo a la gallega and this place was close to my hotel, and…read moremy craving was sufficiently satisfied. The first thing I really like is that the price is quite reasonable because my half portion of pulpo (8 euros), bread (50 cents), and wine (1.50 euros) only came out to 10 euros. And the octopus was cooked really well making each slice very tender. The main problem was that it was very salty, but it helped to eat each piece of octopus with some potato to balance it out. It was also really nice to use the bread to sop up all the juice and oil on the plate. Really nice and cheap lunch, the food seems like good simple Galician.

My friends and I ordered a bit of everything, literally! My favorites were the Tortilla Española con Cebolla, Croquetas de Jamón, Croquetas de Setas y Hongos, and Steak Tartare. My friend had one of their steak plates which I tried and was also really delicious, it was cooked well and I could tell was quality meat. Compared to other places I ate out in Madrid, this place was really TASTY and AUTHENTIC! The restaurant itself was also very beautiful, clean, great ambiance, and the waiters were friendly. Downstairs is more of the bar area where you can have drinks and appetizers while upstairs you get a more dine-in experience, which is what I did with friends. I had a great time and most importantly, the food was amazing!!!

We ordered the menu, which included macaroni with tomato sauce and chorizo, chicken in its own sauce and fries, and pork filets with fries. It was okay food, not the tastiest, but not the worst. It came with a basket of bread. The decoration is pretty typical: chorizos, bullheads...don't bring a PETA member in here. Like my rating says, it's A-OK for the price...always find a menu when you're in Spain, just FYI.

We ate a very good Jamon Serrano tapas, and also a tasty tortilla. Since the place advertises paella (and not the usual Paellador stuff you can commonly eat in other places in Madrid), we gave Paella de Arroz Negro a try. It was a sincere end real pleasure for our taste buds. The best paella I've ever eaten in Madrid.
