Great authentic Cuban restaurant located right next to my hotel. It's not a fancy place by any means. Just a humble restaurant tucked among office buildings. As soon as I walked in, I noticed everyone was speaking Spanish. There is a large Cuban community in Tampa, and this establishment is clearly a favorite among them. I ordered a Cuban sandwich and added lettuce and tomato...not my usual way of ordering it, but I wanted to switch things up. I also ordered a small side of Cuban black beans topped with onions and a large café con leche. The sandwich was very good. It had the perfect ratio of meats and toppings. The roasted pork was flavorful, the seasoning was on point, and the bread was outstanding...soft on the inside with a wonderful crunch on the crust. The black beans were fantastic. They had so much flavor that I was tempted to order a large bowl, but I was already full. By the way, they have a steam table filled with delicious looking dishes. Everything looked amazing. The coffee was strong, flavorful, and perfectly sweetened. It definitely woke me up and got me moving. The staff was excellent. The ladies working there were friendly, welcoming, and provided great customer service throughout my visit. Not fancy - just flavor! Yes, the Media Noche sandwich had lettuce on it, but the flavor of the pork paired with the sweet bread easily made me forget all about it. Great café con Leche, too. This was our first stop for lunch after landing from the airport on recommendation from our rental car driver. It was pretty busy when we came, but then that guaranteed that food was hot and fresh. A few years ago my sister and I stopped by and had lunch. We were born and raised in Tampa and totally understand what Latin food should taste like. it's not that the food was horrible but surprisingly, the desserts and the Spanish bean soup was actually bland. The dishes need more seasoning and flavor. Yesterday my husband and I stopped by and was going to give it a try. We walked in and I'm not kidding you, It must've been 60 degrees inside. It was freezing cold when we sat down, but was gonna give it a try. The lady said that it was cold because the restaurant was empty. We came by for breakfast for a quick breakfast. We ordered at the counter cafe con leche (sm $2.75/lg $3.25) and cuban cheese toast (3$) and breakfast sandwich ($5.25). They brought our coffee and a few minutes later our breakfast. I like the cut the toast long ways for dipping in my coffee. The sandwich and toast were both very good. It's location is within walking distance so it's frequented by co-workers quite often. I've eaten her only 3-4 times within a two-year span and have to say, the food is good but it's quite lackluster. Maybe I just don't know Cuban food, and it is definitely authentic Cuban food; but I always hope for a little more spice. The restaurant overall is small and there isn't much parking on site. But they do keep the serving area and the dining room clean. Most recently I tried the barbecue pulled pork sandwich. The pork was tender and juicy, layered on Cuban bread with cheese. I never had pulled pork with cheese but it was good. It was the barbecue sauce was oh so subtle so you really just got a hint of it so's not to overpower the flavorful meat. In fact, I had to remove the bread to be sure there was barbecue sauce on it!@ And to their credit the plantains are awesome! If I know someone's going down to La Bamba, I'll ask whomever to bring me back an order. We also pop over for breakfast run every once in awhile. I'll have the sausage, egg & cheese sandwich and it is huge! Satisfies that breakfast craving and you still have have of the sandwich left over for lunch. read more

For 30 years La Bamba has been locally owned by the same Hispanic family! Compare that to all the disruption that's occurred in the restaurant industry in the past six months. I recently visited I must admit for the first time on a Friday in early September for lunch. Immediately as I entered the cafeteria style eatery, I saw a great selection of entrees from which to choose , shredded beef, shrimp casserole, beef stew, baked chicken and others. They have traditional favs like Cuban sandwiches, stuffed baked potatoes and cafe con Leche and other beverages. Plenty of free fresh Cuban bread and butter too. What I enjoyed was being able to talk to the owners, the family members who work so diligently every day to ensure customers enjoy their meals.
