It's not easy finding Georgian cuisine in Paris (or New York. Or...anywhere outside the former…read moreUSSR), so I had to stop by Pirosmani.
This narrow, unassuming eatery is along an equally narrow, unassuming alley off Boulevard St-Germain. The staff doesn't speak English, but is friendly and accommodating.
The menu covers a selection of Georgian staples (Chakapouli: a meaty stew, Khinkali: meat filled dumplings, Khachapuri: a bread filled with cheese). Khachapuri was a must, so I paired that with a 'salade caucasienne' (cucumber, tomato, mixed greens, topped with salty cheese and walnuts, and dressed in a vinaigrette).
The salad was tasty, with the bite of the cheese not overpowering. The khachapuri was a show stealer: a bread round fresh from the oven and stuffed with a combination of mozzarella and salted cheese. It was tangy, rich, and immensely satisfying. Paired with a glass of a Georgian red, it was a fine meal for my last night in Paris.
Portions are large, so bear that in mind when ordering!
