Great place. Lovely croissants and brownies (other treaties looked nice). Cheeses also looked lovely. Nice range of baby food in pouches!

Great selection of organic wines! Nice place to browse for some picnic goodies, especially the crusty loaves and cheese selection

This is a gem in a rough area, albeit my own dearly beloved rough area.

I went into Gallo Nero II, my local Italian deli the other day to see if they had Fernet Branca, an…read moreItalian liquor which according to my friends tastes like cough medicine (fools - It's a marmite kind of situation). They did, at quite a reasonable price too. As for the rest, they have everything a good deli should have; a glass counter stuffed with meats and cheeses and fresh pasta, shelves laden with everything you could ever need to make an Italian style feast and friendly, if slightly stern staff. I am not particularly foody and as evidenced by my explanation of why I was in the deli in the first place, I really have no business around fine foods. This might be why the man who works (probably owns) Gallo Nero doesnt seem to like me though he froths all over my Nigella Lawson of a sister though and I often wait outside like a petualnt child as they discuss the best kind of pesto to go with noodles, or pasta or whatever. It is a beautiful shop and strolling off the high street in to Gallo's cosy, tavern like interior is about as close I'm going to come to an Italian weekend break any time soon.

It's an Italian run family business and they are very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly,I even got a free recyclable cloth shopping bag as I bought quite a lot of items. The meats at the deli counter a great wrapped up in paper not plastic and there is a whole array of Italian goodies..go see!!

There are normally one or two people in the small friendly shop, while they are busy figuring out what they need to create the perfect Italian meal, I make a b-line for the fresh pasta. I go to Gallo Nero for the fresh pasta and the basil pesto sauce. I love that they have a variety of pastas; the best is the ravioli, any of the raviolis! They are delicious and cook perfectly every time. With the pesto, you can taste the basil, pine nuts and olive oil in each bit. The pesto mixed with ravioli, add a bit of chicken and presto, an Italian feast. Now, since no Italian meal is complete without anti-pasta, you cannot leave the store without supplies and the store is filled with ingredients. In the deli counter, there are a variety of olives, meats and cheeses. So your anti-pasta can take on numerous forms. Since all Italian meals have a bit of bread and olive oil, the shop will satisfy your needs for those things to. The breads are fresh and smell wonderful as you walk home trying not to nibble the ends. Gallo Nero is a little piece of Italy near Newington Green and if you are going to make the perfect Italian dinner it's the only place you need to go for all the things you need!

The deli/wine bar/restaurant was not particularly busy (about two sets of tables were being occupied). I approached the barista and was handed a coffee and asked to pay £2.50. I hadn't even placed my order yet? The barista looked shocked and I was puzzled (Awkward moment alert!). Apparently someone had ordered a coffee, she didn't see their face and so she assumed it was me? Okay fine these things happen, I guess? After receiving the coffee I did actually order, I was not blown away, it was good, but not the best I've had in London. The atmosphere inside was lacking Italian charm and music also the staff members were yelling to each other about some meat in the deli. On the plus side they have a sunny outdoor area, it is right under the London Fields rail tracks however, so maybe not the place to go if you want to go to escape the hustle and bustle.

It's obviously not a hidden secret amongst local Italians. Definitely recommend. Also, for those with kids, the outside area has a playground and is in a small development so the ids can run around in full visibility and safety whilst you dine. Two thumbs up

They included a beet salad with fresh feta and a salmon salad with capers and black olives. I believe they made the spinach and feta pastry in house, and it was generously assembled in some of the tastiest and most butterladen (i.e.: yummy!) pastry crust ever. I came back later that same day to buy another. (Shame spiral perhaps, but it really was that good!) While staples were overpriced in the shop for taking home, this deli uses some great ingredients in their premade items, they sell excellent food and bread, and there are more than a few gems on offer making it worth a stop-by. I am obsessed with the tea they sell, including several fantastically colored jewel-tone indian elephant tins filled with fragrant English tea. Love!

Seriously I've been offered a whole pig for less money. Ok it's amazing, organic, gluten free, vegan friendly bacon that helped bring down the 3rd Reich but still... That said, the people of Islington needed a place like this, a place they could come for a good coffee (there I go again about the coffee) pick up a loaf of bread with a funny name and indulge some truffle jam and produce made from endangered species (That bit's not true, it's just a very posh deli). All I can gather is that when you mention De Beauvoir to the people of Islington they get very excited. Don't believe me?
