I hear the turkey for Christmas is amazing - the queues outside are a sign of that! It's very reasonable price-wise, it certainly makes more sense to buy from them as it's local produce and you're supporting a local business. Also, you won't need to drive! Friendly as always, hope they are around for a long time yet! Opening hours can be a bit of a pain, but that's a small price to pay! Roll on summer.

This is an amazing butchers. I didn't realise butchers could be so nice!…read more Gone are the days of holding your nose when going in and walking on sawdust, this place even has a bespoke Lewis carpet mat in front of the the meat fridges. I only went in for some ribs and ended up getting completely carried away :) Their selection is awesome. I ended up buying steak and wild boar burgers, chicken breast, lamb ribs, Radlett sausages, spicy chicken wings and free range eggs! Okay, it is not as cheap as some of the bigger shops, but then you most definitely get what you pay for. The chicken breasts are delicious and I only needed 2 as they were rather sizeable! The lad behind the counter, was helpful, smiling and charming and nothing wass too much effort for him. I love the fact that they support the local community and the farming and there is a lot of local produce here to chose from. They also do a selection of glazed produce, hot & spicy, BBQ, herbed and so on, so you can be lazy and get it straight from them all done, no faff and straight in the oven or on the BBQ. I will 100% be back here. The quality is outstanding, fantastic selection and great service. I am a mega fan of this place.
Radmore Farm Shop

Not a fan of the co-op down the road this is the best place to get produce, eggs, meat and just about most things you can think of to fill your fridge and cupboard. The upstairs even has large freezers with ice cream and baked goods, and more meat. The people are very friendly and everything is quite affordable. I am so happy to be able to support my local farmer. They'll soon be starting a delivery service as well!

My husband was able to find whole oats here (called Jumbo Oats) which he couldn't find in any of the major grocery stores. The meat prices are extremely good especially for being so fresh and local, and the frozen meats are a super bargain! We bought some just-picked seasonal strawberries yesterday and they were amazingly delicious. We still need to get some things at a bigger store like some familiar national/international brands or particular varieties of groceries, but Radmore Farm Shop is definitely our new place to walk for fruit, veg, and meat. It's perfect for those "What are we going to have for dinner" afternoons because I can grab meat, onions, mushrooms, and whatever veg suits and cook something up fast. We are definite fans and plan to shop here routinely while we're in town.
Smithfield Butchers

A butcher right across the street from Smithfield Meat Market - which is the largest in the UK and…read moreone of the largest in Europe - not sure if I need to say much more? The butchers are very friendly, know their stuff and seem to like questions and recommendation requests. These chaps do trade/industry customers, but the store front is based on the busy walk up business by regular customers like you and me. You get a far shorter supply chain without the mass processing centres (and what can go along with that), and the meat sold here is handpicked by an expert butcher and cut in-store which delivers superior quality meat. They have a large selection of meats, and not all of it is on display, so ask if you don't see it. As you can imagine, cutting out several 'middle-men' also means all those saved margins are passed onto you. They also do sell small portions, if you want a skirt of beef, or two t-bone steaks, a single medium chicken, etc. But I've always bought in bulk (2-5kg), then divided it into single meal portions and then into the freezer, and suggest this for maximum savings and minimal trips to Smithfield Butchers. For example, large, good quality skinless, boneless chicken breasts here cost about the same as the basic brands of big name grocers which are small, pumped full of water and inferior quality. The 'steak meats' (e.g. rib eye, fillets, sirloin) are about half the price of big name grocers, and since you're buying a 1-4kg slab, you can cut your steak as thick as you want! Some of the best steaks I've had came from Smithfield Butchers, and the best Christmas Turkey ever! If you can make it to Smithfield Meat Market, this one is a no-brainer.

Oh the irony. Why is…read morethere always a line at John Line? It's not the name. It's probably the fact that this small shop has 3-4 butchers who are cranking out cuts of meat with serious speed yet friendly service. I've never seen a main street butcher so busy. I guess people know a good thing. You also know that at this rate of turnover, the product is fresh. The funny thing is... everyone had a laugh at me for taking pictures. One sassy lady asked if I had a meat fetish. I said I heard she does. Oh snap.
