Let me start with the positives. Booking the appointment online was super-easy. Product choices were good (Kerastase and Aveda were featured). The vibe was upbeat and everyone seems happy in a genuine, unforced way. Stellar shampoo with an incredible scalp massage-I missed his name-mustache, earrings, about 5'6". Charlie, my stylist, had a wonderful, engaging way about her. Less than positive: showed a picture of my usual style...of my own hair! Not aspirational but how it's done. Full in the crown and with barrel curls then combed out slightly so it's more beach waves. I should have trusted my instincts to stop her when she didn't use any product (!) to add volume before blowing it flat(!!). Eek! Then when using a flat iron, my hair would not take a curl/wave. It was flat, with no volume in the crown(top) and looked undone/messy. She knew I wasn't pleased and added a few twists around my face and some volumizing powder but after the shampoo, unless she were to tease it, after blowing it flat, it was dead. For what should last days, it didn't even last two hours without me having to add tons of dry shampoo and tease it. I ended up re-blowing it the next morning as it looked awful. All the blowouts around me looked gorgeous, just using a blow dryer and round brush. The lesson to be learned is for salon management: please don't have newer stylists experiment with techniques on paying clients. Guide them on your own hair so that every client walks away happy and with hair you can all be proud of. read more

We came to Montreal for the weekend for a wedding and yelp came to my rescue again in finding someone to tame, style and blow-out my thick ethnic curly middle eastern hair. What I loved about this salon is they went above and beyond to make me happy and it was such a wonderful welcome to the French Canadian people. Benoit and Daniele beautifully styled our hair. First let me tell you how they treated us with EXCEPTIONAL FULL SERVICE. I was in a terrible time crunch and did not have time to do my nails so they brought me a nail file, acetone, and I did my own nails while they were doing my hair. They also brought us a big standing makeup light and let us stay in the styling chairs after they were done so that we could do our makeup. And to top it off, a glass of champagne or a beverage of your choice to only make things better! Finally and most importantly, Benoit and Daniele did a beautiful job on our hair! They were both so diligent and skilled. We have long thick ethnic hair and even though it probably took them much more time than the average set of hair to style, they charged us such a reasonable amount. I loved my experience. They are a relatively new business and imagine they will grow a set of loyal clientele quickly based on their exceptional service. read more

I can't believe no one has written a review about this place. Perhaps to keep it Montreal's best kept secret. Well, I won't keep this place a secret because you will leave this place completely pampered and chill. We all know the world needs more happy and chill people. I was attracted to this salon by seeing their display of quality hair products. The whole salon staff seemed to be very friendly and customer service driven. They did a fantastic color job. The colorist actually listened to what I wanted and made suggestions for me to think about for future visits. The woman that washed my hair had magic hands! She melted away any stress I had with her bare hands! Okay, maybe they were gloved hands, but still, amazing. The person that cut my hair was so fun and animated that I pretty much smiled the whole time. As my time came to a close, I began to worry that perhaps this is one of those fancy pants salons that will cost me an arm and a leg. I completely forgot to ask for their prices when I booked my appointment. Whew! Luckily, their prices are reasonable and completely worth it. But if you are worried, definitely ask before you book. I was looking to get a haircut close to home and was pleasantly surprised with variety and quality of their services, it's more than just a salon - you're warmly welcomed there, get an awesome latte and chill in the beautiful ambiance. I've been there thrice and every time I had an appointment, I felt judged by the staff. I have thick curly hair (big/soft curls) and they didn't know how to adapt the colouring to my type of hair. When I asked for tips and tricks to take care of my curly hair, they said to just buy the kerastase products, nothing else. Anyways, it felt like a loss of my time and money. Had a great experience at l'Atelier. Decided to go there as they had great reviews and it was so close to home. It had been a while since my last professional haircut and was badly in need of some style! My hairdresser was Benoit who took the time to meet me before getting my hair washed and discussed what kind of cut I had in mind and we were both on the same page. He was very professional and explained what he was doing during the cut. He also did a great job styling it with volume and soft waves. Exactly what I wanted. I was in Montreal on business and was frustrated with my hair. (I have fine coloured hair that at the time was mostly all one length and kind of flat) Benoit sorted me out in no time! He knew exactly what to do (long layers). Benoit is obviously a master hair cutter. He also got my hair to curl just with a round brush and blow dryer (and NO product!!) so that the style lasted for days. I highly recommend him. so glad I walked in! I had time to kill in Old Montreal and as I walked past a beautiful sub-level hair salon, I decided top stop in to check for availability and prices for a blowout. It was such a beautiful salon I expected it to be booked and out of my price range, but they were able to squeeze me in at the end of the day last minute for a great price. The salon despite being downstairs is open and airy. I had a great scrub and scalp massage and then a wonderful blowout by Francesca, who even gave me some great recommendations for bars & restaurants. They use Aveda products which is an added plus! L'Atelier St. Paul has to be the absolute biggest rip off of my life, $270+ for color/cut/blow-dry, and for what, I'm not sure!!! Went in exclusively for color, after a great deal of back and forth the hairdresser advises me that she likes a challenge and believes she can provide me with what I want. Honestly, the moment she indicated "She likes a challenge", I should have simply asked can it or can it not be done, yes or no? After all, my hair is brown, all I was asking was for no red in the color, definitely did not seem complicated to me! The website indicated $65 for color and I was charged $70, not sure why I was charged more than the site without being advised of a price change when making the appointment. Following the roots, my hair is sprayed approximately 4 times with a product that allegedly removes any red from the old color, of which I was charged an additional $70 without being advised what the product was or the price. As an aside, they did not mix anything new for my hair, the bottle was lying around and used on my hair, and that cost an additional $70! Then, the hairdresser who alleges to listen to her clients kept pushing me for a cut/blow-dry so I could see the full effect. At this point, I advised her she might have a point (I was getting exhausted with the constant back and forth) and confirmed she could trim my hair (trim and blow-dry and not cut). I agreed to trim as I like my hair a specific length to allow it to dry naturally and curl, too short and it goes frizzy. Well, she definitely did not listen, even after we agreed to how much to cut, she cut way too much. Honestly, not sure why some hairdressers just get trigger happy with scissors, it's like if they don't cut a chunk of your hair they haven't done their job. Thank goodness I insisted on a straight cut and would not permit anything else. As for the blow-dry definitely not worth it, as it was getting late it was rushed. In the end, with the color, toner spray, cut, blow-dry, tip, it came to $270+. The color looked fine at first, but it was night and definitely hard to tell with the lighting. When I got home, I realized a great deal of grey was still coming through. After approximately 3 washes, the grey was back, I guess her challenge did not work. I would never recommend L'Atelier St. Paul and I will never return. In fact, after that experience, they have made me realize how I should have never, ever strayed from my hairdresser of 20-years. In summary, in my opinion, this is a pretentious hairdresser that is looking to simply make as much money as possible from their clients without truly taking the time to listen to them. Would I go back, no, not even if they offered me a free session as my end result left lots to be desired, especially at a price tag of $270+. read more
