Visited Funky Toque for a colour with Maxime and a cut with Daz - absolutely outstanding! Maxime's eye for colour is flawless, and Daz gave me a cut that feels fresh, stylish, and effortless. The whole salon has such a warm, creative vibe - you feel looked after the moment you walk in. Easily the best hair experience I've had in years. read more

I had a wonderful experience at Funky Toque. Both the colorist (Ariana) and the stylist (Elyse) were friendly and professional. They did a great job with my hair, which is very thick and not so easy to work with. I live in New York and am seriously considering coming to Montreal regularly to come to this salon. My husband also had his hair cut and had an excellent experience. read more

I've hesitated for a couple of years on leaving this review, because the stylist who did my hair was actually a very nice person. So, I'll make my criticism nonspecific to any one person. First of all, this place was exorbitantly expensive - the most expensive haircut and colour I have ever had the misfortune of paying for. In the end, with a tip, for a basic colour and very very basic cut, it was almost $300!! I actually paid $290. My partner was flabbergasted. I felt pressured to leave a tip as the stylist stood right by the cash as I was paying. Secondly, I asked for my hair to be dyed black (because that is the colour I always dye my hair - a soft, natural black) and my stylist would not agree to do it because she said she wouldn't like it on me. So, she dyed it a reddish tinged dark brown instead, and one thing I can't stand is reddish hair. It's why I get my hair dyed black in the first place - to get rid of the red highlights. So, I did not get the colour I asked for. I understand the hesitancy to dye anyone's hair a permanent black because it is pretty much impossible to remove, but I have always dyed my hair black. My cut was literally STRAIGHT ACROSS the back, since I have long hair and insist on only ever having a blunt cut with no layers. One cut, straight across. It took my stylist all of two minutes to do it. And then, I wasn't even offered styling (as in blow drying) and was given the blow dryer to do it myself. Seriously. Why this all cost $300 (give or take a dollar) was absolutely beyond me. I cannot recommend this place, at all. Pretentious is the word that sums it up nicely, I think. read more

Came here with a hair disaster on my hands thanks to another salon that decided that golden highlights in red hair were a fabulous idea. I called on a Sunday morning in a fairly distraught state and they got me in that day, no problem at all. I walked in and was greeted by my new stylist, Sam. He was patient, kind and worked some serious magic in getting those hideous highlights outta my mane. I love the products they use, the music they spin, the hair washing station is nice (dark, fully laying down, ok'ish scalp massage...if it had been better, they would have received 5 stars) & they made me a fab latte while I was there. Sam is patient, funny and definitely worth making an appointment with. I have really curly hair and it did not scare him, so yay Funky Toque! Plus the blow out Sam did at the end was completely kick ass and I got a ton of compliments :) read more

Had a fantastic cut & blowout by Elyse recently. It was my 1st haircut in 5 years so I creeped IG for months looking for great haircuts; balayage & beachy wave styles can't hide the cut. Elyse's work stood out. She listens, gets it and focuses, and she transformed me. I love the subtle layers in my long straight hair and all its movement now. I'd also trust her and her talent to more precise styles; she knows her decades and does vintage too. The rest of my experience at Funky Toque was excellent. One hint if you book online & have long hair: call them to let them know, as there's a $5 extra charge (of course, normal) and more importantly they may want to add 15 minutes to the appointment. Thanks Elyse et équipe, love you and your talent! Recommending to friends and I'll be back. read more

I want to start by saying the haircut turned out fine, I'm pretty happy with it. The service is what I have a problem with. For the entire hour I was there, my stylis seemed annoyed. Other than making strange negative comments about my grown out bangs (which is why I was there in the first place???), she never initiated a conversation with me so I just stayed quiet and let her do her thing. I pulled out my reference photo once during the haircut to talk about it and she said "you can show me the reference photo all you want, there's only so much I can do with these bangs"! Honestly, I felt super uncomfortable with her attitude and felt shot down any time I talked about the hair. I never complained about anything she was doing, even as she was pulling my hair and moving my head around without saying anything, so I'm not sure why she was upset. Near the end I said "I really like it" as she was finishing and was shot down again with "well I'm not done yet". It was really strange and to top it all off, I was way overcharged. After tax and tip it was almost $100 for a pretty simple haircut, when I had originally booked a $60 haircut online. I wanted to try to get the original price I had booked but the atmosphere in there terrible and I just wanted to leave as soon as possible. Would not recommend and will not return. read more

This was one of the worst hair experiences I have had in a long time. My stylist was insulting and inappropriate, and did a really bad job on my haircut. After explaining what type of cut I was looking for, in great detail, he proceeded to butcher my hair and gave me a 1990's Jennifer Aniston "Rachel" type haircut that also resembled a mullet. I went back 2 days later to have the stylist "fix" the haircut but he simply made a couple snips here and there (again, ignoring my instructions). My colourist also did a hack-job. She did not blend my roots properly and left me with a visible colour line, AND died my hair the wrong colour (hence the colour line). On a final note, my experience was further jaded by the sewage stench permitting from the salon's broken toilets. Nobody wants to sit and smell sewage yet they had this problem for at least a week (my boyfriend also got his hair cut there). With moderately priced services, surely they could have afforded an emergency plumbing overhaul. I'm curious as to whether or not they violated some sort of health and safety code?! I will never go back here. read more

I went to Funky Toque today for the first time, based on the positive Yelp reviews. I was nervous, as the last time I tried someone new (Aveda), they messed up my hair and I went home and cried. Little did I know that I would be placed with Stephanie - an experienced and very talented hairdresser, who gave me exactly what I wanted. She gave me a cut that she said would last the next 3 months, knowing that I'm a poor student. It was nice chatting with her and she even accommodated my "no poo" - the fact that I don't wash my hair with shampoo/conditioner. I'll definitely be going back to Stephanie... Not many salons offer a latte or cappuccino on the house. read more

I had a lovely colorist work with me name Arianne. I came in with yellow-ish blonde and very patchy roots from coloring my hair at home for the past two years. I asked to have my hair bleached and toned to make it more white and that is exactly what I got. She did a great job at making my hair look dimensional and blend in my roots with the new shade. I will definitely come back again :) my hair was not damaged at all and I highly recommend you come here if you have blonde hair and have concerns about turning out too yellow or losing your hair! I also got a little hair cut by a girl who's name I did not get unfortunately. She was very funny and respected my choice of not having my ends cut and this is the first time that wish was granted to me! No length was taken away and that's my biggest salon pet peeve so I am very thankful :) read more

The music is so loud you can't have a proper conversation with your hair stylist! I don't think they even heard what I asked for. Not at all what I wanted! Please turn the music down a couple notches, one star for now. Also, the awful music selection creates a disturbing atmosphere. read more

Went here for cut and color. Elyse did a great job on the cut and style. She communicated well and seemed to know exactly how to read me and translate my vision into the cut I was hoping for. For my experience with the colorist, it was OK. She was asked to fade in my roots for a chocolate brown to dirty blonde transition (lighter ends already existing), but I believe there was a miscommunication -- she overshot the color, and I ended up walking away with near-black hair all over. It ruined the beautiful (and very expensive) light balayage that I had underneath and wanted to keep. I only took off one star however because the service was overall pretty nice, and I guess my hair is still now an improvement from my crazy roots. read more

Came here for a blowout and my stylist was Will. He's a really cool guy! He put my hair in large rollers and it came out light and full of volume.. I was pleasantly surprised and I felt pretty funky and hip afterwards! I'm pregnant so the last thing I wanted to look like was a mom.. I wanted exactly what I got! Hubby loved it too.. he couldn't keep his hands off me! I guess I'll be back. With taxes the blow dry was $50 read more

Got a last minute appointment here during a visit to Montreal. My hear looked fantastic after but I really only needed a bang trim and and my dead ends cut. I think my stylist took 30 minutes blow drying my hair, 30 minutes straightning it and then 5 minutes cutting it. I ended up paying 80$ for my hair cut (which completely caught me by surprise at the counter)... I don't think I have ever payed that much in my life. Yes it looked fantastic but really, for just trimming the ends etc, I think 80$ is insane.... read more

For the guys. I'm in Montreal from Toronto and happened to find this place because it was open on Monday. I got my hair cut from Sam, he's originally from France so his english is OK, but he's really cool and he really enjoys practicing his english. He gives probably the best fade I've ever had, and you can tell he really wants you to leave there looking Sharp. The price was a little more then I'm used to at $50 but your getting a relaxing wash and condition then Sam takes his time make sure you look good and not a single hair is out of place. Even for the price I made sure I came back a second time before heading back to TO. Cheers, J.V read more

I love this place ! I've had my hair cut three times. I don't remember who cut it the first time, but it was good enough for me to come back. The second time I had Alexia who was so amazing and friendly. I got endless compliments on my haircut (Asian hair, layered it ) so now I will definitely always ask for her. She works very quickly and is clearly very experienced. My hair feels amazing when I leave her! Would definitely recommend ! The haircut is around $70 I believe but I don't cut it too often so I don't mind. read more

I'm always a little nervous the first time I go to a new salon because you never know what to expect. After a bad experience at another salon I was eager for a change and was very happy to discover Funky Toque. It's located right right on the main and funky is a very appropriate description for it. From the moment you arrive you're taken care of. They offer you a drink while you wait or during your cut. The hairdresser I had was really good. She took the time to make sure she gave me exactly what I wanted and made recommendations that she thought would suit me well. I was quite pleased with the final product and got lots of compliments for it so it must have been good. read more

Meh. She didn't listen to what I said about keeping length. Perhaps it was because she didn't want to do another cut and I was a walk in. I'll trust me gut next time. The shortcut is good, just not what I wanted. read more

My girlfriend hates going to the hairdresser because she always ends up not getting what she wants. When she came back from Funky Toque though, I could tell she was more than pleased. Her hairdresser took her time to do her hair, even if it was taking longer than supposed. The entire staff was super sweet and the price really affordable. She won't go anywhere else from now on! read more

It's alright, but not the best for WOC. They make a big fuss about dealing with kinky/curly hair and they refused to try to give me highlights saying that my hair would break, before attempting to demonstrate this to me with a completely bleached strand-test that they proceeded to try to rip. Was not impressed. I later got highlights done somewhere else that turned out wonderfully. read more

Payed the price of four haircuts in one. A terrible experience but I'd partially blame me for not searching up their rates before hand. I also lost my few months old beard there, I think for not being able to communicate in French. Never again in this super tidy posh place. read more

Went there for a balayage hair by Annie and the result is amazing! My hair is dark black and she was able to give me a nice ashy blonde at the tips. I was offered a drink the minute I walked in and the staff is very nice. Really great customer service and Annie is very talented! read more

Annie has been coloring my hair since I got to Montreal last summer. She's a super experienced colorist. They use top grade products and the support staff is great. Whether you're young and hip, or not so young like me, you'll feel cool when you step out of the saloon. read more

Lyette has been my hairdresser for the past 10 years now. Her cutting technics are on point!! She also represent Loreal Canada all across the province in shows and she also teaches for them. She's also an associate at the salon. She's truly great. She's super good at doing up do as well..you can't go wrong! I understand some people can find 80$ for an hair cut expensive but for me it is worth it; you'll love the haircut and the experience you'll have at the salon. Oh and by the way, I kinda know what I'm talking about since I used to be a hairdresser myself for several years. Enjoy your hair:) read more

Going to get yet another haircut to fix the last remnants of the disasterous Funky Toque Hacker attack ( I couldn't cut it all off at once - too drastic). Save yourselves from a similar disaster as I went from long hair to an unwilling and unwanted medium-short cut. (Previous post) What a disaster!! I had long, thick, hair so I called and asked for someone who could work with it for a TRIM and was told that Jessica was the best. What a lie. It looked like she used hedge shears to cut. She hacked off at least 6 inches (8 inches in other places), layering only one side, two random 3- inch chunks on my crown and a thick curl hanging down the middle of my back. I was so stunned that I paid and left with tears in my eyes. I went back the next day for a refund and was told they would fix it instead. I wanted nothing to do with Funky Toque and insisted on the refund. After 30 minutes of the 'manager' giving excuses and eventually yelling at me she told me to leave. I refused so she sent a male hairdresser to talk to me. After 15 minutes of me explaining that instead of a trim I got 6-8 inches cut, and not just a short haircut, but a really BAD haircut he finally agreed to refund me. He then told me that Jessica is a junior stylist with limited experience and not specialized in curly hair! I ended up having to cut it even shorter to try and fix the mess. Funky Toque: Unprofessional service, incomptent staff, and arrogant management. Save your money and your hair - go elsewhere!! read more

No. A big no no. I am so disappointed. I went for a hair color, with a very precise idea in mind. Apparently, the color i wanted couldn't work with my hair. The lady did not try to understand the style I wanted. I showed her picture of what I thought her alternative would look like, and she said it would, but it didn't turn out this way. Afterward, I said that I didn't like it in a respectful manner, and she clearly didn't give a f***. I clearly stated that I didn't know what color it was going to do before she dye my hair, but after the incident, she kept saying that I am the one who picked the color. Overall unpleasant person. Worst of all, when I called a week later (because i told myself I would wait a week to see if it grew on me), she said that I would have to pay for a fixe up. Maybe it's normal in the hair dresser industry to not provide after-sale services, but I find that absolutly ridiculous. As a broke student, it's absolutely infuriating to spend 135$ (left-over bday money) for such a lousy service. FIY: I had to freaking blow dry my hair myself at the saloon, because I wasn't paying for a hair dresser. Again, maybe this is normal but i find this terrible. read more

First time there. Always hated going to a hairsalon but this time was different. I loved my experience and was very happy with the result. Very nice people, but I do not recommend the salon for CURLY type of hair. As I don't really care about my hair I didn't do much big of deal, but when I got out of there it didn't look like i just got out of the hair dresser ( when I called I specifically asked if they had someone for curly type of hair and they told me yes) . My hair cut was ok, but the big boo was that I don't think they have the appropriate product or the experience for curly hair. When I got out my hair was so frizzy that I had to wash my hair again. Again the people working there are nice!! ... But as I found that hair salon through here (the best curly hair salon), well I can tell you it is NOT for CURLY hair. But i'm sure if my hair was wavy it would of been awesome. if you have curly hair; NO if you have wavy hair; yes!?!?! read more

To get a haircut at this place was kind of an impulsive move. I called to check if they have any spots available within 1-2hrs and they were able to get me in 1.5hrs, which was really convenient. My stylist was Elyse and she took really great care of me!! I have thin, straight, medium length hair and I wanted to shorten it up to some sort of a long bob. She was working on me for an hour which is quite a rare thing recently. I felt like she was giving attention to every detail. I also appreciated that she didn't insist on a conversation, as I m not really a chatty type. Overall I had a nice experience and I absolutely love my haircut! read more

I don't usually write reviews but I just wanted to say that Mouni is the best! I got my hair cut for the first time in 2 years. It was past my shoulders and I was pretty nervous. DO NOT EVER GO THERE!!!!! They charged me 63$ for less than half an hour - did not even have time to open my tea bag!!!!! a complete rip off!!! hairdresser only cut about 5 cm of my hair and I basically came out the same way I went in - should have complained right there and then but I was so shocked that my mouth stayed wide open when he was finished and again when I heard the price!!!! the WORST hairdressing salon I have ever been to! and certainly the most expensive! would have rather thrown my money out of the window or burnt it!!!!!! read more

After hearing great things about them, I approached Funky Toque with a somewhat unique situation: I wanted my first haircut in 17 years, after having had long hair in one form or another for about 20 years. Naturally, I was quite nervous about the whole affair. I went in for a consultation with José, who spent a lot of time going over options with me and trying to find a style that would work with my face. Not once did I feel pressured to cut it if I didn't want to, and it was obvious that he had a lot of experience in making the most of someone's hair. Once the decision was made to start, he proceeded to spend a full hour trying three progressively shorter styles until we found one that made both of us happy. He made sure I wasn't given a style that would require too much maintenance (my previous hair maintenance routine largely consisted of washing it, brushing it, and tying it back, so I'm not one for too much fuss), but that could still be sculpted depending on my mood on any given day. His enthusiasm and attention to detail really made the whole process quite exciting, and I spent the rest of the day getting compliments from people - none of whom had ever seen me with short hair. Even the other staff members (and clients!) gave their approval, which meant a lot after so long away from the scissors. We won't even go into the reaction it elicited from my wife, though I will say it made it want to cut my hair more often. I really can not recommend Funky Toque enough. They turned what could have been a very bad experience into a fantastic one, and I'll definitely be going back for a long time. read more

I was there today. I always hated going to a hairsalon for the first time and this is my first experience in Montreal. the receptionist, unfortunately I don't know his name, was very welcoming.
