I reached out to them for an appointment through Yelp in which Sheema respondedly promptly with their availability and for me to call the salon directly to confirm a time slot. I called and they were very friendly on the phone. I went in later that day and finished a balayage touchup in which I asked for my hair colour to be darkened within 2.5 hours. I've gone to numerous hair salons in the past year and I walked out of every single one of those feeling like I got my money's worth and I was happy with the result-- but none of them were impressionable enough for me to commit to a single salon (especially because I've moved around quite a bit). But this experience was different, and I know for a fact that I'll be counting the days until I come back to Montreal just to get my hair done here again. I walked into the beautifully clean and well-lit salon and was immediately greeted by Sheema. She then sat me down and I met Maitland. Right off the bat, he knew exactly what I wanted. This was pleasant as I was used to having to talk stylists into why I wanted to colour my balayage darker, not bleach it to bring the colour up etc. because I want to grow out my natural hair colour, yet I am also too impatient to leave it uncoloured. The stylists regularly exchanged ideas with each other on what to use on their respective clients, which felt reassuring. Maitland was extremely friendly and personable throughout the whole experience, while remaining extremely professional. It was clear that he's confident about his work, and with good reason so. He carefully made sure to use the most nourishing products on my hair, which I really appreciated. He also talked through the processes, so I knew what he was doing at all times. I felt welcomed and cared for every step of the way, as he consistently checked in with me. (There was another blonde girl there who was diligently tidying up the salon during my time there-- it wasn't hard to see that they really valued cleanliness & aesthetics in the salon. She, along with everyone else in the salon were all extremely kind and had fun with each other) Maitland crafted the perfect salon experience and I really look forward to coming back! I am not the person who ever goes to a salon and spends money to get a hair cut. I have had bad experience in the past and thus it is extremely hard gor me to trust anyone with my hair. So I did not initially think of getting a hair cut here but instead had booked a place for my friend who was visiting. She wanted an experienced stylist who would know what to do for her and could guve her plenty of volume. I reach3d out to Nü through yelp, Sheema replied immediately and scheduled an appointment for my friend. After days of poking my friend finally convinced me to schedule one for myself too. So I reached out to Sheema again to schedule one for myself. She called me vack right away to confirm my booking for the same day. We went there on time and Sheema did an amazing job with my friend's hair. She was super happy with the volume and was given plenty of advice on how to maintain it. My stylist was Eva and she really worked her way slowly in. I told her about my fear of ryined hair. She yook her time, made me really comfortable. Constantly asked me if I was om. She also kept checking with me about the length and kept showing me the back, I imagine that must have been very tiresome but she did it nonetheless and I cant express how much I appreciate it. Both my friend and I left super hapoy with our hair cut and styles. I definitely recommend Nü and I do not do it lightly, I take hair super seriously. And I have to say, I loved my experience here. Worst experience ever at a hair salon. It was my first (and last) time here and I came in for a cut with Daniele, I showed him photos but all he said was that I had to do my colour first, I said that I only wanted a haircut and he continued to pressure me even telling me that this is the way they do things here. I called over another stylist to ask him to please let him know that I only wanted a haircut today. He walked away in a huff and returned. I asked her to be my witness as he continued to go on and on about the color. I realized this was not going well and before I could say anything he said that he was not going to cut my hair. Amazing!! Alison is so talented. Probably the best haircut I've had. She is incredibly intuitive and gave me a functional and stylish cut without any suggestions or input from me. I booked the appointment from the states and had never seen her before- I did not bring any photos or suggestions and just asked her to give me haircut that would look awesome with very little maintenance (I have a 1 yr old & a 3 yr old and zero time to fuss with my hair). I used to like going to this salon, then I had some bad experiences. On 2 different occasion, the salon didn't bother confirming my appointment booking with me. They held me accountable and gave me cold shoulder treatment when I got confused between 2 time slots and showed up late ( showed up a 2h30, appointment was at 2pm, the time was only discussed by text message weeks prior to the appointment and I wasn't sure which slot we agreed on) Hair dresser didn't spoke to me for the entire time ( about 2 hours) even though I apologized, she had to rush to finish my hair, couldn't do my full head and now she won't even schedule any new appointmenys with me. Touchy staff, better not to complain or say anything bad as they might just cut you off and leave you to find another salon, bad customer service. read more

I moved to Montreal a few years ago, and I've had about a dozen haircuts since. Not ONE of them has come even CLOSE to the haircut that Daniele gave me. This place, which seems like a little hole in the wall, impressed me so much. I would say that the prices are about mid-range (I think my haircut and blowdry was about $60). But this is the first cut and style I've had at that price that actually seemed WORTH it. Daniele put so much hard work into cutting my hair, absolute precision, fine-tuning everything. It was amazing, as if, for the hour that I was sitting in that chair, my hair was the most important thing in the world. (I have to say, aside from the gorgeous cut itself, as a customer, I so appreciate that kind of concentration. It bugs me so much when I get my hair cut and it's a simple 15-minute snip-snip, blast with the dryer, buh-bye, kind of thing.) I had brought in a picture, and Daniele suggested that the cut I wanted would not work with my hair. Some people don't like that, but I am always happy to hear that a stylist is actually paying attention. My hair is super duper fine and has no natural volume whatsoever, which is a problem with most cuts. The blow dry was also great. He didn't even use any products (except some protectant spray) but again, just really precise technique. And it looked absolutely gorgeous. I will definitely be going back for my next cut. read more

I just moved to Montreal and was in need of a haircut, while keeping as much length as possible. I randomly chose a salon close to where I was located, but I'm so glad that I came into NU! You walk into to a small entrance on the side of a building to a beautiful, cute, clean salon. They have two floors for cutting hair, but the entire area is an open concept which I thought was nice to have to make the salon feel welcoming. Sheema was busy with another client so Daniele cut my hair. He apologized a few times for his english but I thought it was easy to communicate with him and my hair cut shows that. I've never had a stylist listen to me as much as he did! He was very careful with listening to what I had asked and before he made a cut he'd let me know what he was doing, which I liked! I knew that my hair was in shambles as it had been a while since my last cut, but while previous hair stylists would want to chop it all off, he still kept as much length as possible (as asked) and I still feel like he did a great job making my hair look fresh and new. The only thing that confused me was charging more for having my hair blown dry, which back home I never had. Even with that, it came to $60 which was a great deal in my opinion. I'm extremely happy with Daniele's cut and will definitely make NU my go to salon! I want to start by saying this is the only salon I've visited in Montreal so I am not sure what the standard for salons is. To put my experience in perspective, I booked my appointment only 1 dar in advance, the Thurs before valentine's day, as the very last appointment of the day, on a crappy stormy day. The place itself was OK. the staff were friendly enough and offered me tea which was nice. my only real complaint was there was very limited sitting space, just a small bench with a pile of someone's stuff and my appointment started late so it was a bit uncomfortable. I gave it 5 stars because I believe the environment doesn't matter nearly as much as the haircut you get. I don't care if it's mediocre service if the actual haircut is wonderful and looks great. I was lucky enough to have daniel(le?) cut my hair. He was very friendly from the moment he introduced himself. the shampoo/wash included a head massage which was longer than other salons I've been to and felt so good! I seriously just wanted him to massage my head forever :) The whole time he was very nice, and knew exactly what to do with my frizzy, thin hair. I just told him I wanted the same cut I had before (which was done in a salon in Ottawa, so he could only tell from my grown out cut) with some layers and to remove the split ends. The most entertaining part was the cut. I have never seen anyone work the way he did. He seriously worked like an artist instead of just a hairdresser. He worked with passion - each move and cut was so calculated and done with so much care. And, when he was finished I asked him to touch it up with more layers and he did it perfectly and took the time to do it right. Most other hairdressers would have been annoyed. remember this was the end of the day! Above all, my hair looks just as great naturally drying from a shower with the perfect layers he put in... not just by styling it all fancy! Overall, I was very impressed. Amazing experience! I forgot to get my stylist's name but I hope to get it when I go back. I went for a simple cut + style with an intermediate stylist, and they were amazingly kind and really handled my hair well. I'm usually quite scared of cutting my hair short and they could tell right away, and offered to cut it a little at a time to make sure I would be OK with the final product. Stay away! The owner, Alison, is a rude person, who does not understand customer service. She scolded me for not understanding how color works, and kept interrupting while I was talking to the colorist about ways to fix the color of my hair. Alison kept saying that she is the boss, and she decides what needs to be done. Wow! 1. Her attitude was actually creating a problem. 2. No one told me that they had hired a colorist that had little/no experience. 3. Alison' solution -- there was nothing to be done and I ought to go elsewhere to get the color fixed. I would have left except I had a job interview the next day. 4. She was upset that she had to stay 30 minutes past closing time for the colorist to fix my hair color. My hair had ended up being two-toned: muddy black underneath and red on top. The colorist let a brown-reddish color that was supposed to create dimension stay on for 45+ minutes instead of 20 minutes which ended-up looking muddy black and dirty looking against the red hair. The dirty muddy black kept peeking through in the front and every time I moved. The red hair was somehow faded with an uneven application rather than vibrant and shiny looking. read more

im not sure how long this salon has been around, but i went in yesterday as a walk in client and i was greeted with a smile. nice clean atmosphere and as a new comer to this salon i was very welcomed. i got a cut and blowdry , the prices were reasonable and i inqured about some other treatments and those prices were definetly on point . It was very quick and hassle free. They give you a good scalp massage during the shampoo. The staff is very nice and they deliver exactly what you ask for. Had a cut and color done about a year ago there. It looked amazing when I walked out... but it lasted for a week before fading back to almost bleach. For more than 200$ I was very disappointed. I colour my hair with products that fade way less (and color range in purple pink or red), like elumen products, and naively thought any hair salon who would do flashy colour would know product that lasts. They even said that they would not mix two colour as it would fade too much (although I do it at home) It's like I paid 200$ for a Manic Panic tub. And I said during the appointment that the reason I came to a hairdresser was to avoid the fade out like manic panic products do. And I searched for a place that had flashy colour in their profile/portfolio too. Maybe I should have requested Elumen products or asked more details about how long the colour would last. I did not go back to the salon either because they were booked for two months when I first went and they wanted to schedule the root touch up as they're booked long in advance. I have mixed feeling about this salon. The first 2 times I saw Daniele, my haircut was amazing. Unfortunately, the last 2 times were not very good. It's a 50/50 chance I am no longer willing to make. I didn't find the ambiance very inviting - they tend to yell at each other about who's going to buy lunch and what they are eating, boss the junior staff around in an unpleasant way in front of patrons and overall, I usually felt out of place, which is never good. I'm not in my 20's or 30's but I want a young stylish cut and I thought I could get it here. Take your chances. read more

I hate to give a mediocre review for a fledgling business and friendly staff who clearly love what they do. But the place was fairly disorganized, dirty (piles of cut hair on the floor from people who were clearly no longer in the salon) not very professional (personal calls and swearing), and understaffed (phone rang several times while I was there but was not answered because all staff were busy with other things). But my hair styist gave me a very nice cut without much instruction (difficult to communicate with anyway as he mainly spoke Italian) and spent a lot of time on my hair to get it perfect. I think this place could be really amazing -- in fact I suspect the reason why it was clearly understaffed was because so many others find them to be so great -- but this place needs to get out of survival mode and their newbie mentality before their customers see the shine has worn off. Oh, also, I don't know how likely you can get your hair cut by walk-in here anymore. I called ahead on two separate occasions (one weekend day, one weeknight) to see if I can do a walk-in appointment that day and was told they were booked solid. read more

(Please bear with me, I posted a review about Salon Nu - see below - and their response was so aggressive - see below - that I felt compelled to post their response here, as well. It is long, but you can decide for yourself): I wasn't impressed with this place at all. If it wasn't for Danielle - a wonderful, approachable male hair stylist - who treats each haircut like a work of art and makes you feel so sexy, this salon has nothing over others. The 2 women who own the place are fairly pretentious, not overly friendly, and lacking in empathy and approachability. The brunette claims doing hair is her passion because she (verbatim) "ensures all her customers are happy" yet she did not speak to me the entire time she put highlights in my hair. I asked a few questions to try to get her talking, she responded quite defensively and ended each attempt I made abruptly (and this is my favourite part of getting my hair done, connecting with the stylist). And it wasn't that she didn't want to talk either, she chatted with her colleagues instead about their own personal lives; neither took any notice of me. And the brunette owner, once she finished the "golden" highlights (which actually looks more orange-y than gold; I'll be going elsewhere to get my hair fixed) sent me off to get my hair cut but never checked in once my hair had dried to see how the new colour looked (orange not gold). For the very expensive price, I was expecting better personal care and service. The atmosphere is way too snobby for my liking. I have had much better service in other salons, and so I will take my business elsewhere. Sorry to leave Danielle behind, but I very much dislike this environment. I moved to Montreal a year back, I have tried many hair salons in the city, Salon NÜ has been the best experience so far. The Salon has 2 main stylists and they are co owners as well. Both the stylists are friendly, professional, fun and very experienced. I found this salon through a recommendation of a friend when I decided it was time to get a new haircut. Made an appointment with Sheema and a couple of days later, visited the salon. I found the place very chic, young, yet the service was extremely professional. I was clueless what I wanted done to my hair and I think I came out with one of the best haircuts so far! Two Weeks since I still get compliments on my hair :) The pricing is great and the service is fabulous... Its a win-win situation. read more

I had my hair cut done by Daniel as per the rave reviews here and I'm very disappointed with the result. Yes he is very nice, and so are his colleagues, but the end result was very ugly. I showed him a picture of what I wanted, and he made my hair look somewhere between a china doll and cleopatra. Rather than having beautiful bangs, I have an ugly box on my forehead, short and thick, and worst of all, it continues that way to the sides. I swear I could have cut my own bangs much better. Also, the haircut on the rest of the head was very amateurish. I was charged a whopping $70 for it all. I had to go straight to Sephora to pick up some hair products to tame this ugliness. The place itself is very nice and cozy, clean and modern looking. All the girls in my family have absolutely loved it (my mother, cousin and my aunt) and they all got the hair they wanted, looking fabulous. Everyone is warm and polite at the salon but I just wanted to warn anyone going there to really say what they want and be firm about it. When we went just recently I asked for just 3cm to my length OVERALL and then layers + a nice wave over my eyes ( like my mother's, and she was there at the moment and the stylist could really see it all. The stylist said he didn't like leaving it THAT long and showed me just half a cm off would be good, so I went with it. Before the stylist continued he told me not to worry about anything and that he appreciates long hair on women himself. During the cut most of the time I could not see it and when it was finally done it was so different from what I wanted I was just stunned to say anything and did not want to spoil the mood for my cousin and mom who were happy with their hair. I had my hair to my mid-back and now it barely passes my shoulders, instead of a nice wave I have what appears like bangs that were not taken care of for too long and grew out weirdly. Out of no where just in the end the stylist mentioned three times how my hair was "very damaged" and NOW I can start growing it out?? I have difficulties with my hair already (as they know at the salon) and I've been growing it out for so long and taking good care of it, so I do not know why he thought it fine to cut the "damage" out of no where? And why in the end he started saying that NOW I can start growing it out?? WHAT IS THIS. I do not want to sound unfair, but I am sure he knew it turned out bad as well. I came home and just wept in the bathroom. I know it may not sound like a big deal and the hair will grow out, but it mattered to me, I took pride in my hair and it was incredibly important to me. Im not saying I had phenomenal hair, but now it looks chopped up and scraggly. I can't even put up in a ponytail the way I used as it looks ridiculous and short and choppy. It won't even grow out back to the way it was in a year. I'm almost crying now as well and I hate looking in the mirror with this cut. I do not understand why the stylist did this as everyone here writes about how good this place is and my family members are in love with it. I have been thinking to give a bad review or not...but I would like people to be aware, so I'd rather share my experience. I booked an appointment for last week after going through Yelp reviews. The booking process was easy so everything looked good initially. The place is located centrally so very convenient. The hairdresser was Daniele. He was a bit late, but it's ok. By the end of my haircut he seemed a bit rushed because the next client already had arrived. His English is mediocre, but he seemed to understand what I wanted, i.e. a shorter and neater bob. Even looked for it online. All was going rather well until the end. He totally fucked up my bangs.I noticed he was going to do something on my bangs (which were totally ok until then) and I objected... but he told me that he is just going to straighten it up a bit. So I gave in. All that in broken English. Anyway, he chopped a piece right in the middle. Because I wear my bangs to a side and my hair was styled I did not notice the full dimension of his mistake until I got home. Moreover, I strictly asked on the phone to give me a haircut only. At the end of the haircut (which apparently included a blowdry I did not ask for) I was charged freaking $69 dollars! So I paid way over the expected for a haircut I asked for, with a major mistake on top. I was so shocked that I just paid and went. I wish I had more balls to protest back there. The rest of the haircut was ok, he took like an inch out and straightened it. No big deal (I have experienced good hairdressers as well). If they call this precision haircut and charge over the top, I'd be damned. This should have been the norm, a bob is usually a precision haircut! Now I have to wait 3 to 4 months for my bangs to grow back. I have taken pictures to prove it. This is simply outrageous! Mixed feelings. On one hand, the atmosphere is lovely, location convenient, and Daniel's technical skills are objectively excellent (I used to be a hairdresser, so I appreciate that). On the other hand, the haircut I got was not even close to what we agreed on. It took me years to grow my hair out, so the haircut being at least 3 inches too short is kind of a problem- think a bob sitting under the chin instead of softly layered below the shoulders cut. Full bangs are also something I didn't bargain for. My hair is wavy, and he haircut I got now requires a lot of product and styling to look good. Without styling it sadly looks like a frizz-bomb. I'm also quite upset that my hair clearly got washed with a sulfate shampoo, even though I stressed in the beginning that I had a keratin straightener in my hair. So that's a $300 anti-frizz keratin treatment gone in a blink on an eye, exacerbating the problem with styling my new haircut. The whole experience set me back $69 for cut and blow dry. A fair price in general. But, given that I got something that does not suit my lifestyle and that destroyed an expensive prior work, I can't really consider that a good deal. That said, the haircut itself is not bad and does suit my face- if I invest a lot of product and time into styling. Not sure how much good that is going to do with the upcoming fall winds and humidity though. I'm hoping the style will grow on me, but let's just say I'm not feeling it three days into the new 'do. read more
