To understand the appeal of this you actually have to go see it in person. There's underground tunnels that connect the roundabout area. So getting from one side to the other is very simple. However, watch out for the gypses around here they will try to get you to give them money. There's also people trying to get you to donate to what ever cause they are working on. Just don't make eye contact. I thought I was signing a simple petition but the chick was trying to shake me down for money. I may be an American but I am not an idiot. read more

ok..2 experiences here .. day 3 of paris...took metro to Notre dame...goal to walk to Eiffel Tower...we did...saw the Arc de Triomphe...but didn't make it there. day 6...took a bicycle ride with the Chopaderos Paris Chapter...6 hour long ride ...they took us to every major tourist spot and gave us detailed descriptions...local style! well one of our stops was at The Arc de Triomphe...we rode our bikes across multiple lanes of traffic after dark (so close to midnight)...we stopped at the "island" in the middle of the roundabout that the Arc de Triomphe is in. and we stood there and gazed at the flame, while learning the story of the significance of the flame...then they told us that we are not supposed to stop here at night because they are worried that someone will extinguish the flame...the guys have tried to stop here multiple times in the past and were shooed off by cops...but we sat here for a llooonnnggg time...and left on our own...so that was a really super cool experience... i don't think i took any pictures...i spent most of the time gasping for breath after the long ride here!!! just looked...i do have pictures!!!! read more

Of course you should see the Arc de Triomphe but to go to the rooftop there is an elevator for disabled and even I had my grand mother with me but the lady who was checking my ticket didn't tell me about that. It is a giant famous arc! We stopped off here and walked around for about 15 minutes. We didn't climb to the top as we still had our luggage so we just took turns being tourists and snapping photos of ourselves around the arc. This is included in the Paris Museum Pass, as soon as you enter, the stairs go all the way to the top, with minimal landings to take a break- so be prepared. I stumbled upon this gem around 7:30am, after taking a wrong turn, as I was making my way to the Champs-Élysées. It was a lovely sight to see. Go early because this place is really crowded by 10am. Friendly Note: Make sure you avoid the annoying people asking for money. (These people want you to sign some bogus form for a made up cause. They are very pushy, and they try to look in people's wallets) Just avoid them. I do believe these scam artist are located around most of the major tourist attractions. They were haggling this older, elderly couple, and I stepped in and was like "Oh there you are! Come on Gramdma, we need to catch the bus." They were very thankful I helped since they were bombarded by four of these people pressuring them for money. read more

It's beautiful, it's a central landmark, and it overlooks the Champs Elysées. Definitely a must-see while in Paris. Unfortunately, I was unable to make it to the top, which probably would have made me love this more. Despite a short line, it literally did not move for 15 minutes so we left. Also fun - my friend and I asked a random tourist to take a picture of us in front of the Arc. When we checked the camera later, this person somehow managed to take a picture of us that didn't include the monument. C'est la vie. read more

So, what is a trip to Paris without paying a visit to the Arc de Triumph. Mind you, as a site it is pretty impressive, and I was suitably impressed when I paid it a visit (and it is definitely much better than that radio tower on the Champs de Mars). Basically it is a war memorial, original set up to commemorate the revolutionary and Nepoleonic wars, but to include later wars as well, including World War I and an eternal flame. While you can get a pretty good look at it by walking around the other side of the street, there is a tunnel that grants you access to the Arc itself (though it doesn't connect with the metro station, which is really annoying because you have to go up, and the down again if you come, or leave, by train). The arc also houses a museum, and you can climb to the top, but both of those things require you to purchase a ticket. However if you just want to wander around the inside, and outside, of the arc you can pretty much do that for free. While I would suggest that it is a must visit place in Paris (and doesn't take too much time either) I suspect that if you end up in Paris you will probably go and check it out anyway. read more

The Arc de Triomphe (pron Tree omph) is a nice monument. It is in a pretty crowded area, I'm assuming it is because it's next to the Champ Elysees. I did not get close to the Arc as there are lanes of traffic between the side walk and the structure. Many people felt the same. It was pretty crowded at the corner sidewalk where everyone took pictures as opposed to risking crossing a very busy street. If I had planned to go to the top, I would of thought otherwise. After visiting the structure and seeing it in person, I found that it wasn't really worth going across the way. Actually, a similar arc, Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel outside the Louvre, I found to be more intriguing, beautiful, and easily accessible. I am actually confused why the Arc at the Carrousel is not more renowned. It actually looks like it has better reviews, perhaps cause you can't go to the top? Also, getting a view of a famous shopping street, is not necessarily enough motivation for me to climb. However, I did hear you can get great view of the Eiffel Tower. I can check this famous structure off the bucket list but I think with the many many things to do and see in Paris, it would be more than okay to pass this one up. read more

The Arc de Triomphe is such a sight to see. When the Metro was approaching it before the turn at the round a bout, I caught my first glimpse and my heart fluttered a little. It looked just like the photos. We rode an open tour bus that gave us a better view of the artwork on the Arc and it looks so magnificent. The recording on the bus informed us that Napolen's tomb was actually carried through the Arc. On our last day in Paris, we decided to climb the Arc. Be prepared with water, its 284 steps to be exact. There is a point in the middle to stop (with restrooms and a souvenir area) but the first climb up there was the worst. Bring water! But the sight up top of the Eiffel Tower and Champs de Elysee was totally worth it! I would suggest you all climb it. It is included in the Paris Museum Pass and if not, it is 9 euros at the door :) read more

Beautiful. People say that montmarte is the best view of Paris but I believe standing at the top of the Arc is even better. It cost 6 euros to ascend the 284 step stairwell to the top of the Arc. The view is breathtaking. You can see Paris from every angle, castles and churches prominent in the distance among the millions of structures surrounding the town. Make sure to walk around several times and just take in the architecture of the city. Inside the arc you can learn about the art sculpted all around the Arc itself and familiarize yourself with it's history more. The Arc has a camera in the center of the structure pointing to the ground which can be viewed on a screen inside the arc. Be sure to do a little dance wave to the other tourist up above, Create a flash mob or anything to mess with the people up top watching read more

We took the usual pictures of our family outside along the traffic circle. Then we went across, through the tunnel and up the 200+ steps to the top. It was well worth it. Once on top you see the entire city of Paris, particularly on a clear day, which we were able to experience. Make sure to take your time going around at least a couple of times. My first steps in Paris, France were in right near the Arc de Triomphe. How could I not take a few pictures with it holding all my things? I think it's impossible to visit France without seeing this structure in person since it epitomizes a central hub in the city. I saw lots of people going to the top of Arc--it didn't really seem worth it but I guess someone who went to the top and saw a great view would say otherwise. Sadly, on my last day of the trip waiting for a bus to the airport, my bag was stolen at a restaurant off one of the roads surrounding the Arc--may their souls rest in ****. Worth a visit! Come during sunset so you can see the Arc and the views in the day and at night. Champs Elysees is also very pretty at night. Going up the Arc is pretty expensive though at €12 for adults and €9 reduced, but it's worth it if you haven't been up before. Boy, trying to fit in both sightseeing and shopping in a 2 day, 1 night trip is DIFFICULT. But we did not miss out seeing the Arc du Triomph but decided against going up the top. Daytime, it's not going to be that impressive but it was still oh so very pretty and grand and that's all you need to remind you that you're in Paris. L'Arc de Triomphe: It's beauty and majesty is undeniable and somber as you reflect it's meaning for many of its troops who gave their lives fighting for their country. Also one of the deadliest roundabouts in the world i'm sure. You think roundabouts in DC are bad? I find it almost incomprehensible how drivers maneuvered without causing massive pileups every minute of the day and I'm pretty sure I had a few heart attacks in the cab everytime they went that way sheesh. read more

The Arc de Triumph is a great monument. We visited on foot and spent about 20 minutes checking it out from the ground level. We did not buy tickets to enter the monument. It was difficult to get to due to its location in the middle of a major roundabout. There is a stairwell on the sidewalk that leads to a tunnel you have to use to access it. read more

Of course the iconic Arc de Triomphe gets 5 stars. It doesn't disappoint one bit. We visited on July 14th, so it was draped in French flags and there was some kind of ceremony taking place in the early afternoon. Eventually, later in the evening, we were able to ascend for the view. Amazingly, as young Europeans, entry was free of charge! This saved us €8 each, which was fantastic. I love being part of Europe. The monument is beautiful, with stunning architecture and views. It truly is a symbol of, not only France, but of Europe as well. It's easy to access by metro, the views are well worth even the €8 fee, and you can have the honour of standing on one of the most important monuments in the world. It's a must-visit. read more

One of my favourite monuments to visit in Paris. From the moment you come up the stairs into the Place d'Étoile and under the centre of the Arc, you know you're someplace special - seeing the flame of the Unknown Soldier, and all of the bouquets of flowers laid in memoriam. The first time I visited, some veterans were kind enough to let us hold their bouquet and take a photo with it. The climb up the stairs to the top is worth it! You have a 360 degree view around Paris and all of its special monuments. This monument is included on the Paris Museum Pass, which I highly recommend for anyone visiting Paris! read more

This was a really nice sight. The tombs and eternal light at the bottom are lovely and the views from the top are nice too. My first trip to Paris I didn't know that you could even go to the top so it was a nice new experience for me on my second trip. Please note that if you want to go up the Arc you have to enter from a lower level across the street. It's a little confusing. The views are great though. All roads lead to the Arc so it's just cool. It also affords you a really nice view of the Champs and the Eiffel Tower itself (something that is sorely lacking when you go to the top of the Tower). If I had to chose one I'd say to climb the Arc so that you can see the Tower. read more

Don't visit Paris without coming here. This landmark lives up to the hype and is as impressive as the photos suggest. What really sticks out for me about the Arc was going to the top. The view from the top is stunning and better than any picture could produce. Go later in the day when the line dies down a bit and the lighting is better (and not so direct... there is no shade cover up top and that kind of sucks). If you stay up there long enough you'll most likely get to see a traffic accident from the stupid traffic circle that surrounds the arc and has zero lanes with a dozen roads entering it. How they ever thought that what a good idea is beyond me, but alas that has nothing to do with the Arc except DON'T cross the street. There is a tunnel: use it or get hit. read more

Watch the sunset from the top. Watch Paris come to life at night and see the lights come on at the Eiffel Tower. Be amused at the insanity of the traffic circle as people rush to get home. Take the stairs and stop to enjoy the statues and carvings and bas-reliefs. This is a war memorial - please be respectful while here. Tips: The museum pass works here and allows you to skip the line for tickets. If you go during the day bring sunblock and a hat. If you go at night it can be breezy, so bring a jacket. Also? We had to see the Arc because there is a mini version in NYC near NYU which upon further research is half as tall as the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. What prompted to actually do this kind of research?
