There is very much I could say about Burdick's in Walpole, but mostly I'll shut up, because the stuff behind the counter speaks volumes for itself, Suffice to say, this is the best hot chocolate served anywhere at any time in any place. Visited here with some friends during an early summer afternoon, had a scone and then...the piece de resistance...the hot chocolate! I've never had a better one and that's a fact. Usually when a place is built up so much it never seems to meet expectations. That is not the case with Burdick's, which is as good as advertised. Their other baked goods (Black Forest cake, most notably) were very tasty and would rank at least three stars on their own but the real selling point here is the chocolate. Service was relatively fast, despite the fact that the dining room was packed and there was a line at the counter...and I went in what was supposed to be their slow season. In all, treats for three came to a bit over $21, which, despite the price, was reasonable, given the quality of what we consumed. When I go to NH I typically travel up the eastern roads but whenever I'm in the western part of the state I make it a point to stop at Burdick's. It's chocolate heaven and always worth the trip. I am in love with this place! My first experience at Burdicks was during the holiday season. Maybe it was the snow, maybe it was the chocolate mice, maybe it was the breathtaking decor, but the entire store seemed magical. We purchased a handful of chocolates from the retail shop. Chocolate combinations that I never dreamed of, but were so incredibly decadent. We had chocolates with early grey tea, cardamom, pink peppercorns, and sea salt. We even had tiny chocolate penguins and mice. We savored each morsel, not wanting it to end! I must add he bag of chocolates (which given the fact that they are handcrafted, delicious, decadent and packaged so lovely!) was very reasonably priced!!!! We then went to the restaurant/cafe side and ordered beverages. My boyfriend ordered the richest, delicious mocha. It was made with Burdicks chocolate, which is out of this world. I ordered a honey-ginger-lemon concoction which I dream about to this day! I've even tried replicating the recipe at home, to no avail. We also tried the petite french macaroons, which are everything a macaroon should be! I tried pistachio and lavender. These are just as melt-in-your-mouth-delicious as the chocolates! We have visited the Burdicks in Cambridge, which is much closer to our home in Providence. While I enjoy everything they have to offer, the MA store seems to lack the magic that the NH seems to have. I dream of Burdick's, and have considered driving to the 3 hours just to get lost in the atmosphere with macaroons and hot chocolate! read more

My husband pointed out to me that my reviews here are tinged with negativity. I have high expectations and standards and a very discriminating palate! That said, this fancy-pants bistro in small-town-rural NH is a true gem. Burdick's is known all over New England for the decadent chocolates they make. My friend gave Burdick's chocolate as her wedding favors! Before the wedding, she took me there to get a hot chocolate and it was divine! I have to say, it was the richest thing I've ever drank in my life, but it was delicious! Update - had a great meal here tonight. Coming for dinner, rather than lunch ... the prices didn't feel so disproportionate. (And since I didn't pay, they really weren't any issue!). My entree was very well executed - the seared sea scallops with some reduction (balsamic?) was nice, but the accompanying greens topped with a parsnip puree took the dish to another level. I also had a real nice butternut squash soup to start. The wine selections by the glass were not extensive, but adequate. I think there were half dozen solid options for red by the glass. By the way, some of the breads here are from Orchard Hill Breadworks, which is a bonus. I'd still feel underwhelmed at lunch (they could solve this real easy with a modified lunch menu), but for dinner - no issue, nicely done, 5 stars. read more

This honestly was one of my favorite spots back when I lived in NH- - my best friends and I would make the 40 mile or so trek from Hanover for dinner and a just a taste of their rich chocolates. It's honestly been years since I've had dinner here (Easter 2010 after getting lost on the Appalachian trail on what was supposed to be an easy hike... ), but I still remember my faves which included their charcuterie plate, the pate (yumm), and cheese plates. Loved the steak frites and the roasted chicken, and of course their chocolates. I'm obsessed with their hot chocolate and chocolate almonds. After celebrating several birthdays and holidays here with my best friends, I only have the fondest memories of this quaint, cozy restaurant and chocolate shop. I say this because this is what happened on Friday when I got home from work and there was a Burdick package in the carport: Husband: Oooh it's a Burdick box. me: WHAT?! Burdick CHOCOLATE?!!!! We stopped by this store on our way home from a trip to VT. A coworker of my wife's suggested we give them a shot and try their hot chocolate. The store is very clean and nicely set up. I must say the white hot chocolate was the best I have ever had. My wife got the milk hot chocolate and made me give up mine since it was so good. Unlucky for me, next time I will not be so willing to share. We also got a few chocolates which were also fantastic. It is a little on the pricey side but well worth the splurge. I love Burdick's. It might be because I love chocolate. And pastries. And cheese. And more chocolate. A family friend has been recommending that we try Burdick's forever. We finally made our way out there during a weekend visit. We got to the restaurant on Sunday just before their brunch was scheduled to end. They were so kind, however, and said that we could order soups, salads and appetizers from the menu. My sister and I couldn't say no the pate platter. My mother ordered the cheese plate and my Dad ordered a chocolate pastry and the mushroom soup (weird combo, but if you know him, it makes sense). The pate was incredible...the cheese (what I would eat of it anyway) was delicious. We were able to enjoy one of the funniest moments I've ever seen when my Dad attempted to eat one particularly smelly cheese and before it even made it past his lips he squealed, "It smells like nasty gym socks" and tossed it back on the table. He then proceeded to drain his mug of tea and demand that someone give him gum to get the "stench out of his nose." :-) Not all cheese is for everyone! I will definitely come back again and hope to host some sort of brunch or tea party here in the near future. What a great little New England spot. read more

I love L.A. Burdick's chocolate--perhaps best in the country (5* for quality). BUT, don't get hooked unless you're a local, as they are inflexible on shipping. Even in non-summer months (where it's understandable air shipping is a necessity), they require express shipping rather than allowing client to save up to 20% on ground shipping. I used to go to the cafe in Cambridge and I loved the hot chocolate and glacee they sell there. If you're looking to impress they really do have the best chocolate assortments. Beautifully initimate fine dining restaurant with a hint of country style. Also includes a full service cafe connected to a sinfully delicious chocolate shop. My sister took me here for drinks and appetizers. Decent wine list, great bottle (beer) selection, but only standard beers on tap. The service was attentive and patient with any questions (not to mention attractive). The menu consists of artistic higher end selections. I very much wanted to try a little bit of everything (it all sounded delicious), but was there for a quick nibble. We decided to share the cheese plate. It came with five chunks of cheese, a very small portion of fruit, and a dollup of marmelade. The plate is large enough to share with no more than four people. The cheese ranged from a mild camambert to a stinky blue. I loved how a couple of the cheeses are locally made. None disappointed. I do wish the platter came with more fruit. The place is a bit on the pricier side, but a great experience. The meal also ends with their complimentary signature mouse truffles. So cute! The chocolate store was a treat in itself. Little tasters of a bit of everything are displayed. Downside...most expensive chocolate store I've been in this country. The chocolate is great, but my god $8 for an ounce of chocolate almonds? I do want to end this on a happy note cuz this place is somewhere I'd visit again. My dad's frugality would say otherwise, but the quality is worth the price. read more

Our guest loved them and took all of them home. You can customize the ribbons and they have different fonts, colors, and mice tail colors to choose from. There was a Burdicks in Northampton years ago, now I drive the 70 miles or so to Walpole just to have their hot chocolate. You'd think it would be simple enough to get Good hot chocolate anywhere, but it isn't so. No one makes one that come even close to Burdicks. Amazing! read more

Met a friend here to enjoy the café, but not the restaurant. I had a cold version of the "dark" hot chocolate (thankfully made with soy and minus the whipped cream, since I'm lactose intolerant). My partner had a hot chocolate and my friend had an iced Americano with a madeline. Those items came to about $16 (!!!). However, I'd say it was worth it -- my drink was so rich and so thick, even with the soy, and it was unlike any chocolate drink I'd ever had before. When I lived in VT I tried to go here often, great place and atmosphere.One thing is there crème brûlée; for me it is the best I have and will ever have in this lifetime and my next. Visited this restaurant on a vacation to NH where one of my friends was getting married up North. Maybe because there are only 2 restaurants in this quaint little town, quality is not high on the priority list! My husband ordered king salmon which was prepared well but the actual quality of the fish was terrible. The fillet appeared to have been cut out of a very small fish and it wasn't fresh at all. We also ordered the malpeque oysters, which I hate to tell the management....were not malpeques. Unfortunately for them, I worked in the seafood business for over 15 years. Maybe we should have stuck with beef and chicken dishes. We also visited the cute litle grocery store next door, where I found the same oysters mislabed and some mahi that was mislabeled as grouper. 1/27/2011 We have a secondary home in Vermont (we live in Europe) and spent years trying to find a good restaurant in Southern Vermont ...until we went to Walpole. This restaurant is definitively one of the most refine places that one can find in this area . The main courses are perfect (fishes, meat ...) and delicate; I had a fabulous rabbit leg the other day ! The wine list is small, but some wines are exceptional (incredible Chinon by Charles Joguet); however the house wine (californian) needs to be replaced by better choices . After such an outstanding meal we have been disappointed each time by the desserts (hard pieces of cake) ; it is too bad; this is a mistake that must be corrected. But, all things considered, this is the most enjoyable and nicest restaurant in all this area. We recommend it strongly. Don't bother. The help is so rude and snobbish it ruins anything they have to offer. The help will just stand there and ignore you and keep talking to their friends. It's pretty inside, but the food is average and overpriced. Customers there love to stare. They probably call it people watching, but it comes across as arrogant and intrusive. An absolute Diamond of Walpole. I make sure to visit and collect hot chocolate to make at home later. They have solid cocoa practices in the Caribbean with sustainable practices, makes me feel better to support them, which they don't have to advertise as their quality is much higher than any other chocolate shop I have ever been. What is a California guy doing in Walpole, New Hampshire? The story is too long and a better question is, what is a restaurant this good doing in Walpole, NH? Tucked into a valley on the edge of the Vermont border, Walpole is a great little greek revival town with a colonial flavor. Small town, slow pace, beautiful area. Imagine my surprise when some friends took me to an amazing restaurant there. The story goes that a successful documentary film maker who's name escapes me for the moment, lives in Walpole and wanted a good restaurant there. He met a fantastic chocolatier and financed Burdick's. The chocolate is top notch, but it doesn't stop there. The ambience, service, and food were also great. I started with a blue cheese salad with walnuts and bacon, then had seared scallops with lentils and broccoli rabe. Finished it off with a fresh fruit tartlette and some chocolate to take home. Amazing place that is up to big city standards and keeps the small town feel. If you're ever within 100 miles, go to Burdick. read more

A friend sent me sampler box from this place as an office warming gift just two days ago. Wow! The package was beautiful. A ribbon tied, embossed wax seal, wooden box with the most beautiful truffles inside. They even have these little chocolate mice with tails. But looks are only couverture (covering) deep. I have had other good to great truffles -- Schmidt, Rechiutti , and Fran's. But for freshness and unique flavors, Mr. Burdick's are probably the best. My local chocolatier is exceptional, but he only does eight flavors. So it is quite a treat to have an outstanding Earl Gray truffle (better than Fran's) or a Provencal-inspired one (lavender and honey - I think). The truffles were all beautiful. They are a little less sweet than standard so the flavors really come through. What lucky devil out there is going to get my L.A. Burdick delivery? Maybe me... I should not surprise me that they are so good as the people who sent these to me used to make chocolate professionally. read more
