Die Rebellion des Zimtsterns is a cute, quiet cafe close to where I live, so I was undoubtedly…read moreexcited when the website told me there are lots of vegan and vegetarian offerings. In fact, the fellow and I were so interested that we headed over one Saturday in the early evening to check it out. Unfortunately it was closed, although the hours did say it's open later. It ended up being a good thing in retrospect, because the vegan menu isn't so good for more substantial bites. But more on that later. I got my chance a month or so later when I was out and about early on. I headed over to the cafe and made my way up the couple of steps inside. The interior is pretty and cozy, with light wood, an array of seating and a backdrop of bright green walls. I had a coffee and a pastry, although it seemed there were only one or two vegan options. The lunch menu also looked good, but again, a lot of vegetarian options. I read one of the complimentary magazines while I was there, picked up a copy of the most recent Ex-Berliner on my way out, and was done. I returned again last week and had an even better experience. In the late afternoon, the place was packed, but the vibe was still relaxed and friendly. There were plenty of vegan options, and the hardest part was choosing which to have. I eventually opted for the apple strudel, accompanied by a soy hot chocolate. My impression of this place is that it's a better kaffee and kuchen type establishment than full-blown restaurant, but for veg people, it's at least worth checking out.

Vegan, vegetarian, organic and even gluten free options in Berlin- I found one lucky spot. We…read moreactually only accidently ended up there while looking for a nice coffee place in the area. The name caught my eyes at first because I love everything with cinnamon especially German Zimtsterne and aren't we all wanna be some rebels now and then. We started out with a slice of vegan apple-tarte / cappuccino and GF Cinnamon stars which totally matched my lactose free chai latte. The staff was really nice and friendly with all my allergies and checked the ingredients carefully. After finishing our coffees and sweet treats at perfect people watching approved sport next to the big glass windows, the place convinced us to extend our coffee break into a late lunch. We both had that day daily lunch special- a roasted pumpkin half with a nice herby cottage cheese dip and fresh salad. All and all great place to try some healthy organic food in that area.

Goodies - Raw vegan strawberry mint cheezecake. Delectable, sugar and gluten-free.

I was a little disappointed of the limited gluten-free options. The top two tiers of the cake display as well as the cookies and short breads all contained wheat flour. Only the bottom tier was raw, vegan and gluten-free. On my first visit, there was only one gluten-free cake, on my next visit at least they had three. They do have some additional gluten-free options in the refrigerated section, like chia pudding or chocolate mousse. Flavor wise, the raw cakes are awesome. They use cashew nuts to make the cheezecake filling with no added sugar, only natural sugar from dates or fruit. You get the healthy fat from coconut and walnuts. Guilt-free and nutritious dessert! Between the strawberry mint, chocolate coconut and strawberry rhubarb, it's hard to pick a favorite. The chocolate one was sweeter and the most decadent. Prices are high for Berlin standards, about $7 per slice of cake. Please stop using wheat flour! There are so many gluten-free flours you can use in your cakes to make them healthier.

Came here for brunch about a month ago when the bf and I were in Berlin on vacation. We decided to…read morecome here because of its high ratings on Yelp. We got in just before noon, and we were glad we did because the place got completely full soon after we got seated. The menus were a little confusing as we don't speak any German and the menus had some English pages mixed in with the German pages (the little footnotes were what really confused me, but then I realized that they were using them as markers for different types of allergens). However, it didn't seem that hard to figure out as most of the offerings for brunch offered either cold cuts, cheese, vegetarian spreads, etc. with pastries and such. I opted for their normal sized vegetarian offering (you can ask for a vegan one also) along with coffee and a 20 mL cup of red currant juice. The bf got an order of their scrambled eggs with bacon, along with a 40 mL cup of orange juice. The vegetarian offering I got was amazing. There were a few different slices of cheese, 2 different types of savory spreads (one yogurt based, and the other was some sort of curried spread), and a bunch of fresh fruits. We got a very generous sized basket of bread to share, and it was just a perfect and somewhat light meal. The bf's eggs were delicious, and our juices were fresh and tasy as well. We could easily see why this place was so popular with the locals. Would definitely come back here if I ever happened to find myself in Berlin again.
